For my Western Civ class, I like to tell my students about a Croatian medical journal article that used DNA from a large sample of Croatians from the Dalmatian coast to examine evidence for that mutation’s prevalence as a consequence of the Black Death. The sample size led to the only obvious title which included 1001 Dalmatians.

I think that modern society has made life “too safe” and has not allowed our immune systems to develop. I grew up in the 1950’s and yes, our mother took us in for all of our vaccinations. But she also let us play in the dirt and sandbox (where the neighbor’s cat pee’d) and let us “fool around” in dirty water. She had grown up on a farm and allowed our immune systems to develop natural anti-bodies. The medieval peasants had to be sturdy and many children died before the age 5. The “less than special” ones were weeded out by Mother Nature.
Sadly, I think Big Pharma and Big Food has done more harm than good over the last 50 years. Again, no one who grew up in the 1950’s had allergies to peanut butter, or at least I never heard about them.
Polio’s rise in importance is believed to be related to children growing up in such a clean environment that their immune systems did not develop adequately.
