1. I had never heard of Shibam, but I hadn’t heard of Khara Hora (about 3000 km north of Shibam) until yesterday (also a pretty cool place).

   The Shibam site originates in the 3rd century, but the “skyscrapers” were built in the mid-16th century. (Rome, btw, had four and five story walkup apartment buildings in the 1st century). the reason it’s so compact is the area was infested with Bedouin raiders and there used to be a wall around the whole city. It was a walled town in hostile territory.
