  1. Remember it well and was uber proud of the girls and this from a guy who knows jack about curling. Three of those hard round thingies in the red circle is good thing, amirite?
25 years ago? Could’ve left that part out.

    1. “….25 years ago? Could’ve left that part out.”

Never saw it, but thought the same thing – “25 years ago” wow where’d it go?

  2. The more I think about it, the end of cornhusk curling brooms was a harbinger to how everything will be worse from now on. Solway is right. He’s not a pessimist, he’s pragmatic.

    1. How I miss the thump-thump-thump of a properly wielded Rink Rat.

Never did much curling, but in high school did a lot of bonspieling. Lived in a rural area and 2, maybe 3, sheets of ice was the norm in the local communities. That meant 24 hour bonspiels that were basically long drinking sessions interrupted by short bouts of curling & shorter periods of sleep. You might get a draw for Fri at 8:30PM, Sat at 3AM, 7:30AM, 1PM and 7PM.

      Ah, the good old days…

      1. We grew up in small town BC, and Dad took up curling which he really enjoyed. Do remember his reminiscence of a bonspiel hosted by communities about 100 miles west of our community. It was a weekend Dad never forgot; games being punctuated by hospitality by the locals (and it was hosted by several small communities).
Back at his local rink, there was a story that, late into a different bonspiel, a curler eyed the rink and said “move the broom a bit over and I’ll take them both out”. Problem was, there was only one opposing rock in play.
Same town, one ardent player had macular degeneration so his team would use a flashlight to help him position his rock. Other teams were heard to consider nobbling the flashlight.
        Those were the good days.

  3. I only watch women’s curling.

It’s the only time I ever get to hear a woman yelling, “harder, harder, hurry, hurry, hurry!” 🙁

    1. A friend of mine liked curling – claimed it was the only time she ever saw a man with a broom!
First push broom I used had a flask in the handle. Still was a struggle to give up my Rat.

  4. A true champion in every sense of the word. I remember watching Schmirler’s final shot that gave her team the First Ever Curling Olympic Gold in Nagano. That one seemed a tad more nervous than this one but every bit as gutsy. I think I was as proud of Schmirler the Curler and her team as I was of the Blue Jays winning back-to-back World Series. Epic!

  5. Schmirler the Curler had 4 Canadians on her team.

The Blue Jays had 1 token Canadian each year.

  6. I remember Sandra Peterson/Schmirler well. Could have completed against men. I appreciate this post very much.

  7. I like everything about womens curling … except the shrieking voices. Sorry, but that sound makes me RUN for the exits. Same thing in womens soccer … the shrieking on the field and from the sidelines is … as they say in the audiophile world … “fatiguing”.

    1. There was once a day when we could flee the shrieking and go to work.
Those days are over, and the shrieking will continue, into your ear, forever.
Women, love ’em but don’t listen to ’em.

  8. That was a ++ shot, especially to stick it perfectly and to do it in the highest pressure circumstances. It’s what distinguishes the greats.

It is annoying however that all the “greatest shots” videos feature feature big weight hits. More difficult and more impressive is an ultra precise draw to score when there is zero margin for error and everything has to be perfect – ice choice, delivery , line calling, weight judgment by the sweepers and the house. Success in that case is a total team shot success.

  9. This event raises funds for the Sandra Schmirler Foundation in support of neo-natal care. I’ve raised funds and played in it a few times. As well as being for a great cause, its a great pro-am bonspiel. I got to hold the broom for a couple of world-level lady curlers.

    1. Sweden’s Anette Norberg: 2 Olympic golds, 3 world championship golds, plus lots of silver and bronzes. The best!

  10. Thanks for posting that up. I like to think that, if she hadn’t been taken too soon, she’d have laid down a record to claim the GOAT of women’s curling.
