True North- The RCMP is tapping cellphones but wants us to trust them
The RCMP has been using “Canadian-made” technology to spy on people’s cellphones for 20 years, even using spyware allowing officers to surreptitiously turn on phones’ cameras and microphones.

The Queen’s cowboys have never been more than a Canadian KGB with ridiculous dress uniforms.
There was a time the RCMP were a first class police force. They started to wither sometime in the ‘70’, s around the time Canada started looking for a new identity and welcoming the third world. I’m old enough to remember.
I’m old enough to remember after graduating high school in 1976 and going to the RCMP station and having the sergeant say “sorry I got to be honest – you don’t fit the profile we are looking for…”
I was (still am) a 6’0” physically fit WASP.
The killer-elites AKA RCMP make the FBI look like pikers.
The RCMP, like the FBI in the States, is turning into the Stasi
As with the FBI, so too must the RCMP rank-and-file whistleblowers come forward, if only to save their own skins.
The organization itself is beyond salvage.
Until that happy day, my trust remains withdrawn.
Nothing new.. Except the expectation that your precious precious smart phone is secure.. Its only criminals, so relax :).. But then your government expands the definition of what a criminal is to include anybody who votes the wrong way..
Their democracy, their justice, their talking points..
Most of it based on computer models / unmeasurable crap.. What else are they going to do with all the data they collect but back fill the justification for what they are doing.. Policing that is no longer based in reality is how we get things like Canada is full of Nazi’s or concepts like climate justice.. Nutcases protecting their democracy from reality..
Ol’ Gomley must be getting so old. Yesterday when talking about this, all he could say were the Israelis have this technology. Absent minded or purposely continuing to burry that the Obama administration hacked journalists, notably CBS journalist(at the time) Sharyl Attkisson’s laptop, James Rosen’s cell phone, and phone records of AP reporters, just to name a few!!!
(if they did this to journalists, of course they did the same thing to Trump)

We’ve known this spyware was a thing since 2010. We’ve heard it was probably a thing since 2005. We found out, thanks to Snowden, that they’ve been planning it since the Clinton administration.
The fact that the RCMP (or any cop-shop in any country) can -remotely- turn on your phone’s camera and microphone means that there is an ARRANGEMENT with the cell-phone manufacturers and the telecom carriers both. That’s a feature they would have to build into their products, it isn’t something that happened by accident.
It also explains why phones don’t come with an OFF!!!! switch that turns them the h3ll OFF! when you push the button. So the cops can turn them on, obviously.
So for the RCMP to be pretending that this is no big deal is hilarious. It is the biggest Big Deal in modern life.
Ask yourself what it would take to stop this surveillance. Short answer, a software update. That’s all. One update to all the Android and Apple phones, and that’s it. Just disable remote access. Done.
What would it take to get the companies to do it? The fall of the current Deep State. That’s the longer answer. The RCMP/FBI/CIA/Interpol blah blah blah all disbanded and replaced by something that is afraid to offend the common citizenry.
Probably harder to do than a software update. Just my opinion. ~:D
Agreed, but the cell phone makers would have to constantly update to work around the state’s hacking, not to mention all the mischief makers out there.
No. That’s what I’m telling you. They didn’t “hack” their way in. It isn’t some nefarious programmer defeating the company’s security measures.
It is this way BY DESIGN. Right from the beginning. The government told them what to do, and they did it. Years ago.
Other people have certainly hacked their way in, but the alphabet-soup cop establishments of the world were given the keys to the hardwired back door.
probably a thing since 2005
The same year I joined the independence movement in Saskatchewan.
you are right
I remember watching a video about 15 years ago where the journalist removed the battery in the phone yet the SIM card kept sending information as to where he was and when.
So if the police is watching you, the SIM card would still tell them if you were in the proximity of say Freedom truckers or January 6 protesters, to use two examples…
and that is enough for them to do what the hell their boss tells them to do…like raid your home, arrest you, freeze your bank account et cetera
we live in a scary age where the most wonderful inventions are used by the least wonderful people to do not so wonderful things
I cannot wait to see what evidence ( fake, real or a mix of both ) they will use to keep the most popular president in the history of the USA from running in 2024
Phones don’t come with an off button? Since when? Or you must mean something different by that than is obvious.
Pfft. Why do they need to spy? Its the digital age. They can make up anything they want and get their dweeb code experts to stamp its authenticity.
Liberal Judges could care less especially if its to put down a far extreme alt right conservative terrorist.
BS. Its Israeli made Pegasus spyware.
