According to a new report from Reuters, GM idled operations at its Factory ZERO plant in Michigan in mid-March, with the automaker now deciding to extend the timeout until April 13 as sales of large electric trucks and SUVs fall short of expectations. The move temporarily affects approximately 1,300 jobs.
Factory ZERO builds most of GM’s highest-profile electric models, including the GMC Hummer EV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, and Cadillac Escalade IQ. However, the plant has been subject to multiple pauses over the past year as demand for large, high-priced EVs has melted. GM had already reduced the plant’s forecasted output by roughly half earlier this year.

No autos being made. And they call it Factory ZERO.
I like the way the author had the fortitude to say “demand for large, high-priced EVs has melted.” Not declined, or weakened, but an honest appraisal.
The word I’d have chosen is … immolated. Kinda the opposite of melted.
Maybe spontaneously combusted?
Maybe they’ve discovered they’re selling people shit.
The problem with battery cars is batteries.
The newer batteries coming, that are closer to solid state, charge quicker, have a far greater range – estimates of 700-1000 miles – work better in the cold and have a much longer life span.

Nowadays cordless tools are the standard in the trades, a place noticeable for its high number of nail straighteners, because buying cordless tools and tool sets is profitable.
Anyone remember the 3 alarm fire that occurred at the GM ZERO facility back in 2023? If you’re a cynic, you might question to cause of the fire (rather than accepting the media release that a fork lift ran into a stack of batteries).
The result was a bunch of departments being closed down, and an extended worker release in certain departments associated with the seven of the buildings involved in the fire. The thing is, GM is going to have insurance and specialty re-insurance for just such occurrences. That coverage is going to accomodate “down time”, “business interuption”, and employee salaries of those departments directly effected. It will be paid with the “understanding” that upon clean-up those individuals will be back in their regular positions. And, it will be business as usual.
As a cynic, I don’t think that came to fruition. As a HUGE cynic, I tend to think we’ll see a lot of curious fires popping up at EV manufacturing locations. These cell batteries already have historically proved they are a risk. Some of the more enterprising companies “might” apply that to their advantage to save a few bucks while they dismantle the boondoggle.
You can fool some of the people some of the time…
