Toronto police have arrested three Brampton men in a major fraud investigation dubbed “Project Carbon Copy,” alleging a cross-country organized cheque fraud scheme cost financial institutions about $500,000.

In a news release, officials say the investigation began in February 2025 and uncovered a group that allegedly travelled across Canada depositing fraudulent cheques into bank accounts, with other members immediately withdrawing the money at ATMs and through point-of-sale purchases.[…]

As a result of their investigation, 23-year-old Jashanbir Jabbal of Brampton, is charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000.

A second suspect, identified as 25-year-old Gurbir Jabbal of Brampton, is charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000.

A third suspect, identified as 23-year-old Aryan Gupta of Brampton, is charged with two counts of fraud over $5,000.

Seems a Brampton man is otherwise known as Indian.
Seems a Toronto man is otherwise known as Black (or some other colour of the day).
Just an observation.

Are the Brampton men out on bail yet?

Don’t cheques have to clear before the money is put into an account. They do where I live and sometimes it takes two weeks, even a Canadian government cheque.

Where I am from, as well. If approved by your bank, you can access a small amount of the deposit right away, but the rest you have to wait, even on large, linked, bank to bank transfers, which also require a phone call and manager approval and i’ve been banking with them for 25+ years!

I guess it’s to deal with the fact you can deposit a cheque just by taking a picture of it, through the app, but you have to link the app to your accounts. I don’t know, I spent my life trying to do things the right/proper ways, more fool me!!

Depends on the color of your skin. Banks in Canada have special provisions for immigrants that the native born population is not privy to – no cheque holds might just be part of that.

Yesterday I had a phone call from a man, with a thick Asian-Indian accent who, said that someone used my credit card to buy a $770 I phone. He wanted my credit it card number so he could help me out. I heard loud boiler-room talk in the background and hung up. Multiculturalism shows its colours.

When banks or big corporations are robbed, it’s a problem. However, call your local police after a house or car break-in and see what interesting response you get as a simple citizen and taxpayer. I won’t keep you in suspense; nothing, bupkis, “Why are you bothering us? There is nothing we can do”.
