Big news out of Ontario, as carmaker Stellantis (Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep) announced it’s moving production at its Brampton, Ontario plant to the United States.
Prime Minister Mark Carney is of course blaming Donald Trump’s trade policies for the move. But wasn’t it Carney who promised that he would be able to quickly negotiate a good trade deal for Canada if Canadians elected him PM?
And don’t forget how Carney has recently started touting that Canada already has the “BEST” trade deal with the US (auto workers in Brampton would probably beg to differ today…).
Predictably, Ontario Premier Doug Ford is lashing out, denouncing Trump as a “TYRANT” while demanding that Carney hit the Americans back.
Is this the smartest strategy for Canada? How are other countries seemingly managing to negotiate trade deals with the US while Canadians are left waiting?
And all this is happening as the Canadian and Ontario governments have collectively pledged $52.5 BILLION tax dollars to auto makers for electric vehicles and battery plants – despite consumers seemingly not wanting to buy EVs!

The Jeep/Dodge brand has some of the absolute worst reliability ratings around, mind you, the Big 3 all have less than exemplary records of quality vehicles.

Truly sad. That plant was originally AMC, and they made relatively decent cars after the merger. (The AMC Concorde became the Chrysler Concorde/Dodge Intrepid). I drove my MILs shiny Red Intrepid a few times, she loved it as a replacement for her ‘K’ Car. I worked in the area a few terms as a COOP student. A bunch of us used to go every Wednesday after work to O’Reilly’s bar for dart night. Drove by a few years later and it was now some Indian restaurant. Went to the mall with my wife, the hall was filled with men with turbans, the stores filled with their wives and daughters.

At one time, Canada and the US had the “Auto Pact” agreement that for every one vehicle sold in Canada, one would be built in Canada, applying to the “big three” only. This eliminated tariffs on US made vehicles sold in Canada. Both countries were happy with this arrangement, it made sense. Foreign companies that didn’t manufacture in Canada had tariffs applied to vehicles sold here.
The WTO made us get rid of it, other companies wanted the sales here without the obligations on manufacturing here, so nothing has to be made here, to be sold here.
Why blame the party you voted for(Trudeau liberals) for the last 10 years of incompetence, corruption, wokeness and destruction of your country when you can blame orangemadbad for you own personal idiotic choices?
