  1. Wisdom comes from doing, not watching or just listening.

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless

    James 1:22-26

And this is why the Book of James was included in the Biblical canon. Practical wisdom.

  2. He’s absolutely right that giving yourself over to your sport is one essential ingredient to rise to the very top. I’ve been privileged to watch at close range world champions in two different sports and can vouch for the accuracy of what he says. But you also need natural talent, physical and mental. Not everyone can be a world champion, no matter how hard they try. Plus you need good help – supportive parents, smart coaches. Many are called but few are chosen.
