Here is something to consider about D-Day. Have you ever wondered why the American zones, Omaha and Utah were located so far up the peninsula from Sword, Juno, and Gold? Why were the British and Canadian zones located to the east end of the D-Day landings. Consider if the British and Canadian forces had failed to gain and hold their targets mainly the bridges that prevented German reinforcements from proceeding up the peninsula then the American forces would have had time to perform a strategic evacuation. Think about that when you watch all the Hollywood hoopla about the success of the invasion.
Considering the number of troops landed in the first few days, I doubt retreat was seriously considered. The Americans suffered the worst casualties at Omaha with about 2,500 and the least at Utah with about 200. All the beaches has significant enemy forces inland and had to fight their way out of the beachheads. The British and Canadians ran smack into concentrated German forces. I don’t know that it was a gift to the Americans to fight over 100 miles to outflank the Germans and meet up with the Canadians who fought a very tough 20 miles or so.
