CTV- Ingersoll GM plant shutdown: 500 layoffs imminent
The company said the decision to halt production is not related to U.S. tariffs but rather market demand and high inventory for the BrightDrop vehicle.
What the heck is a “BrightDrop vehicle?”
Representatives of the provincial and federal governments, which each kicked in $259 million to help the automaker upgrade the facility, were on hand for a media event commemorating the opening. The total price tag for the GM’s upgrades to its facilities in Ontario in Ingersoll and Oshawa was $2 billion, GM has said previously.

I’ve asked many in this part of Ontario “who is buying these golf carts?”
The market for an electric delivery van is pretty small.
This contract was to get a cut of the green scam pure and simple.
I’m guessing there are some land speculators out by St Thomas are getting really nervous right now.
The best part is having a 20% pay hike in exchange of a 100% unemployment rate in just a single year! That’s efficiency!
ha ha ha !!!
oh lordy. its all in the numebrs eh? one number 20 and one number 100!!
easy peasy!!
aaaaaand on the topic of electric vehicles, can we expect oh, 15 20 years when the only ICEs on the road are ferrying the elites? (kinda like the special traffic lanes in Moskva (sp) reserved for the likes of Brezhnev), but STILL a dearth of EVs, will those elites then BLAME IT ALL ON THE PLEBES for not ‘buying in’ to the green mantra?? is that the default backup plan??? blame it on the voters????
well, in fact, key word, VOTERS is *precisely* where the all important 20/20 hindsight BELONGS in that scenario.
Now that we have closed our one EV plant can we take the tariffs off of Chinese EVs so that China will take the 100% tariffs off of our Canola? That’s a multi-billion dollar export. Unlike EVS.
^^Common sense
Union solution, get the governments to buy more vehicles. 300 sold YTD.
That plant is close by to me. It used to be a big deal, making the Chevy Equinox and GMC Terrain, couldn’t produce enough. They moved production of the Terrain south, then decided EV vans were a thing. Um, nope.

Well, if you can get the dumbass politicians to kick in a half billion taxpayer dollars
you’re off to a roaring start… right?
Oh well.

So apparently much of GM autos are sourced in China now.. Arent we lucky to have such a great Governmental connection to China. China on the US northern Border,China on the US southern Border(Darien Gap,Panama Canal). Will there be battle fought on our soil? China (as of 2022),owned 22 MILLION Hectares of Trudeau/Carneyland. No wonder Trump is pissy with us. I am pissy with us.

The south has started to slowly become controllable. That only leaves the north (aka. Canada); who has decided to stand in solidarity with their Chinese friends with regards to retaliatory tariffs.
Oh Canada, whatever shall we do about you?
invade, take over, polygraph every voter, all Liberal voters liquidated, NDP institutionalized. Nice country.
Nice to hear Doug Fatass Ford add his stupid remarks…hey Doug, nobody’s buying battery cars or trucks you Dimwad.
Ford thought so much of this subsidized ‘industry’ that he stood ‘shoulder to shoulder’ with Trudeau to shit all over our God given rights and freedoms. Had to beat down protesters to keep those auto parts flowing. The tariffs, US ditching EV mandates and these shutdowns seem like karma to me.
PS Doug Ford and Cory Teneycke want Carney to win so that they can run Ford for fed CPC. If Poilievre wins, Ford will age out and Cory can’t have a go at the PM office.
It should be called shitbox. And they should make GM cough up the money and tariff imported GMs 100% until they do.
“What the heck is a “BrightDrop vehicle?””
It’s a mythical creature like a Unicorn. I live 20 minutes from Ingersoll and regularly drive by the CAMI plant and I’ve never seen one including in the parking lot and storage lot.
Worse decision ever made was to give up production of the Equinox at that plant. A decision made as part of Ontario’s commitment to green madness. The people running the Canadian automotive industry and have done more to destroy the industry than Trump’s tariffs.
“Brightdrop”??
Isn’t that the new van Kate bought for dog show travel? *snicker*. It would take a tad bit longer to get to Philadelphia… but just think of the eco-virtue Kate would be displaying!
Used is only $102k+ Can.
https://www.autotrader.ca/research/brightdrop/zevo%20600/2024
And it’s “rated” 302 miles! Hahahaha
This had nothing to do with ‘green madness’. There never was an option to keep production in Ontario. This was a GM decision to move it to Mexico.
Wasn’t there a scenario almost exactly like this one down in South Carolina at the end of 2024. I seem to remember an EV factory in the process of being built down there with a US govt. loan despite the financials of that company being suspect. It was written off as a crony payoff to political peers. The company filed for Chapter 11 almost immediately after securing the undeserved/ high risk loan.
Addendum: Found it. Proterra Bus EV company. Same deal. Filed Chapter 11 after getting injected with green money.
If there ever would be fit use for EVs this should be it along with basic commute vehicles. That’s a big “if” because government climatastrophe policies make cost-effectiveness impossible to calculate.
Yes – limited distance to travel but lots of start and stop action. Worst thing for an ICE, no problem for an EV. And it’s a lot easier to hook up a high voltage charging station in a commercial garage than most home set ups. So there has to be a reason why this van tanked. Lousy workmanship or design?
It would be a cruel joke if Canada was getting all the models of vehicles that are not selling.
You write cruel.
I see just.
You are unaware that we don’t get the best OJ from Florida, but lower quality stuff? The premium stuff stays in America.
I owned an alternative energy company that was incorporated in Ontario. My Canadian partners were captivated to the point of psychosis over obtaining and complying with grant programs. They were obsessed by them. They were animated by them. It’s all they ever wanted to talk about.
Me on the other hand as an American entrepeneur, I was obsessed with sales, growth, cost control, and net profitability.
When I tried to persuade my partners to incorporate in the USA and to concentrate our sales efforts close to the people who would buy our products, I was essentially ignored. It was shocking.
I then came to realize that Canadian business is a byproduct of the patronage system of government, and run by and large by people who are more than comfortable being a Subject of the Crown. It was cultural. The Crown and His Majesty’s Government decides who the winners and losers are that is the way it is.
It’s the Canadian way.
That’s interesting insight. Thanks for sharing.
It’s not my way. This country is going down.
Your comments remind me of something one of my accounting professors used to say: Americans love to make money, Canadians love to count money.
PET broke the economy to the government’s will in the 70’s then in the 90’s Chretien kept industry fat and lazy with his artificial 60-cent dollar. With no incentive to upgrade and become more efficient, our industries stagnated and when the dollar rebounded they were unable to react and so became dependent on government largesse to remain operable. Add in impenetrable layers of costly red tape and regulations to keep the small and medium businesses struggling and you get the Canadian economy.
Another one of Doug’s ‘investments’ has come a cropper. People in Ontario will soon have fond memories of the Wynne years.
the people of ontario are not that stupid
It sounds like a distinction without a difference.
agreed wally. they are vastly MORE stupid.
Agreed Peter, Doug Ford is Kathleen Wynne in a fat suit.
Oh well.. Subsidies and mandates.. Or is it mandates and subsidies?.. Its hard to tell.. And the sad part is, if you don’t take it some other punter will.. 18 months of good times :).. Jobs jobs jobs.. All of it borrowed money..
while helping to
decarbonizedemobilize your fleet“Provincial” government…
Surely not blubber douggie’s government, right?
Right??
So, you long for the return of Kathleen Wynne?
Do you know that you can dislike two people intensely at the same time? You’re welcome.
Bright-Drop vehicle. Something that would be -perfect- for a Woke florist in downtown Toronto, doing deliveries to their snotty clients in Cabbage Town, Eglington, Lawrence Park etc.
But otherwise? Boat anchor. An utterly unrepairable mechanic’s nightmare, with a battery pack that can’t be legally disposed of. Even the wrecking yards wouldn’t touch one.
This is the stupidity that our federal and provincial governments are still pushing on us. Election cometh, my friends.
The amount of taxpayer money spent on the EV folly could have cured world hunger and supplied clean drinking water to hundreds of millions in a nanosecond. Take a bow lefties. The carcasses of needlessly starving Africans is all on you.
yep. and some of those deceased Ahfricahns are the kids who chipped away for pennies a day in the rare earth mining operations.

waaaaaaAAAAAYYYYYY to gooooo!!!!!! lefties !!!!!!!! back to killing kids we see !!!!!
I was an environmental consultant for a major car company for almost 2 decades. Lord knows I tried to educate them on how EVs weren’t everything the greenies made them out to be. I though was successful at least in making sure that they didn’t make any great commitments to solar energy power purchase agreements.
You would think that for the amount of $$$ GM spent on coming up with the name “BrightDrop”, which sounds like something you would find on a cereal box wrapper , someone in the group might have said using the word “drop” along with the word “Bright” might not be such a good idea.
Were any of them aware of the car named the Edsel ?
rumour was, the original nickname was Edwontsel . . . lol just kidding !!!
my brother who taught autobody had one he turned it into a ‘Ranchero’ type
auto-pickup truck hybrid. one of a kind.
This would be funny except when one realizes that the $259M tax dollars were mostly western tax dollars. Ontariowe does not have an economy save that it is propped up by the west. Does thug ford know this?
ALBERTA 51!
AL, I am not sure most Albertans want to join the US. Sure we would have more representation in government but I don’t think I want to increase my share of governmental debt. How about AB and SK just leave Canada. Both provinces have contributed more than they have received so they do not have to take any of the Canadian debt. Also a yearly increase of 20 billion (average transfer payment for last 50 years) staying in Alberta would sure solve a lot of tax problems.
Lets be honest about this. The government both Federal and Provincial should not be investing tax payer dollars on anything they have no clue about. It’s the perfect example of repeating the same thing over and over and over again and expecting a different outcome. I wish i had dreamed up some kind of scam to get rich quick and present it to the politicians they get a piece and I get the rest .I’m beginning to believe that all politicians are dumber than a bag of rocks or more crooked than a dogs hind leg. Steve O
Kick backs. It’s all about the kickbacks.
You can bet some politicians and bureaucrats got very wealthy off of this.
Steve O you had it perfect “Lets be honest about this. The government both Federal and Provincial should not be investing tax payer dollars.” Everything after that dilutes the truth.
They chose the name Bright Drop because Glory Hole was already taken.
(Should I be concerned that my Android phone knew how to auto-complete “glory hole”?)
BrightDrop Vehicles should promote themselves. With promotional pants, perhaps. And the slogan, “when the going gets tough, the BrightDrop trousers!”
“Brightdrop” sounds like a name someone in China would create to sound American, but it’s just gobbledie-gook.
There was this black pimp who presented a Korean john to his black whore and told her, “Gobbledegook!
“One of the United States’ major demands in USMCA renegotiations is for Canada and Mexico to harmonize their China tariffs with those of the United States – thus effectively consolidating North America as a U.S.-led free trading bloc designed to keep China out.
As an article last week in The Wall Street Journal noted, since USMCA was negotiated during Trump’s first term, China invested billions of dollars in moving production to Mexico to get around U.S. tariffs – a move that now looks to be doomed.”
