Dispatches From the Maple Gulag Truck Stop

Gord Magill takes an in depth look at the problems that lead up to the recent crash on I-35 in Austin Texas, killing 5 people.

Recently, a horrific collision took place along Interstate 35 in Austin, Texas, where a commercial transport traveling at high speed crashed into a number of stopped vehicles along a stretch of the interstate that was under construction. 5 people were killed, including an infant and very young child, and another eleven people were sent to hospital, many with critical injuries. It turns out that the driver of the truck, a gentleman by the name of Solomun Weldekeal Araya, was a very recent migrant from Ethiopia that only had his commercial drivers license a scant four months.

  1. So, if I’m reading this properly, it looks like Amazon is subbing transport out to commercial trucking companies and calling it Amazon Logistics. The one they chose in this case (after a little research) shows an operation with only two owned tractors and one leased tractor. However, the company has some sort of ties to a company in Dallas, which may suggest it’s just a small satellite location of a bigger company. Incidentally, if the information documented by USDot is accurate, they only hold a $750,000 Liability policy. And, the driver was, also, charged with five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault. So, there are substances involved.

  2. I thought Amazon was specifically set up with independent contractors and LLCs to avoid just this kind of lawsuit.

Was he licensed, and how did he get it?
this should be a bigger scandal.

    Google “Operation Safe Roads”
The last republican governor of Illinois, brought down after a whole family burned to death thanks to illegals buying licenses.

  3. I don’t see how $750k liability is acceptable for a transport truck with the potential to take out multiples more that what I’m able to with my medium small car and driving with $2 million liability.
The dead people are far more important than a simple cost of liability premium issue, we should expect it to get a lot worse in Canada as new Canadians with less than ideal English ability move into more mainstream jobs.

    1. I may be stupid to post this, but I am just going to say this – based on my own personal experiences and based on a map of countries by IQ, Somalia is at 90 IQ, they are NOT sending their brightest. Based on this map of IQ as well, Israel at an average IQ of 120 is surrounded by “less than special” countries – Jordan is close at 100 (the average IQ needed to actually graduate high school – not just be socially promoted). The rest are in the 90’s or even one (I forget which) is at 88 or 89. Forest Gump had an IQ of that, according to the story.

    2. Well … that’s far better than the MILLIONS of uninsured, likely unlicensed “newcomers” driving the roads of CA. I used to trust traffic signals, because every civilized citizen obeyed them by stopping on yellow and red. But no more. I literally look both ways before crossing an intersection on every green light … looking for “newcomer” drivers (and motor voters) who ignore red lights and blow thru intersections. It’s getting REALLY BAD out on our roads again. For a very discernible reason.
