Records Were Meant To Be Broken

Sportsnet- Alex Ovechkin scores No. 895 to break Gretzky’s NHL goals record

Gretzky’s total of 894 goals had long seemed unapproachable. Ovechkin passed it even after missing 16 games in November and December because of a broken left leg, a testament to his durability and a knack for putting the puck in the net consistently for two decades. He surpassed 40 goals this season for a 14th time — two more than Gretzky and also the most in league history.

Gretzky broke Howe’s record a little over 31 years ago, since he scored 802 on March 23, 1994. He added 92 more before retiring in 1999 after a total of 1,487 games over 20 seasons.

  1. The Ceeb journalist a couple of days ago, tried to portray both Gretzky and Ovechkin as the greatest villains in human history (pardon the hyperbole) because in the case of Gretsky, he supports Trump, Ovechkin, for his part, considers Putin as a friend.
To make matters worse in this Journo’s eyes, Gretzky was seen sitting next to Kash Patel and Gary Bettman during a Capitals game.
Leave it to the ceeb to tarnish a great sporting achievement with petty politics.

    1. I just read the comments on an article about “the Putin stooge who Trump-loving Gretzky admires … blah, blah, blah.”

So Muh Russia gate just never ends with the mentally ill among us. It’s all they got … so they repeat it like a Tourette’s patient.

  2. soooo gretsky’s stock price aint what it was, feces on his winnipeg statue now this.
so much fer hero wership. personally l was never into that stuff for long.
certainly not any in Canaduh. IF l had to pick one it would be George S Patton
for multiple reasons. and yes, kinda ironic for a hard core peace loving hippie eh?
(hint: the rationale kinda goes like this get the godam war over with to save lives)

    1. What position did Patton play?
      Was he a goalie?
      Gretzky statue is in Edmonton!

      1. Patton, well he was kinda the coach. and as far as winnipeg vs edmonton
thats what l know about hockey lol

  3. Rose-Cobb
    Ripken-Gehrig
    Bonds-Aaron
(Okay, maybe not so much that last one)
Just like those unattainable and untouchable records I never thought I’d see #895. Good for Ovie. Had a chance a long time ago to sit with Dale Hunter after he returned to coaching the London Knights following a year coaching the Capitals.
“What’s it like coaching Ovechkin?” he was asked.
“You can’t coach him. Why bother trying…”

  4. How long did it take Gretzky to reach that many goals versus how long it took this guy?
    Just wondering.

    1. Amazingly just 1 game difference. OV 1486, Gretzky 1487. This was to tie. OV broke the record at 1487

      1. Good Hockey knowledge, my friend! That’s remarkable. Are they similar bodies and pure skill? The same kind of finesse player? Or is the Russian a more physical player?

        1. Gretzky leads Ovechkin in assists by quite a bit, indicating he also had a knack for getting the puck to the player with a better chance to score.

          1. He would always get the puck To Messier or Coffee or Kuri, or Simpson if he saw them better positioned.
Wayne was a true “team player.”
Yeah, his assists were legion, as noted below buy a stat dude.
I saw Wayne play, with big Mess as bodyguard. A sight to behold.
As for Canadians who now hate him….PISS OFF, EH?

          2. Gretz has more assists than any other player has total points. Even Jagr was not that close.

          3. Around 1200. Way more than quite a bit. And an assist counts for the player the same as the goal scorer. One point.

  5. Never heard of this guy. I haven’t followed hockey since the days of Dave Schultz and the Broad Street Bullies. (Although native Saskatchewan and ex-Flyer Nick Schultz does live down the street).

    1. I actually prefer the larger Olympic ice … which opens the game up for more skilled players. The game looks better to my eye

      1. I prefer the larger ice surface too as it entails more skating and passing finesse.

    2. It should be limited to my relatives only and ticket prices need to go up substantially.

      1. Two of you relatives never back check and they don’t deserve 8 million a year:)

          1. Different game back then – more contact, no 2 line passes kind of basketbally! Jeez, I wonder where Bettman came from??
            Oh yeah! NBA.
I paid attention back in the day when I didn’t know who was going to get ”the cup”

  6. As Gretzky said, Gordie Howe was there when I broke his record, and I’ll be there when Ovechkin breaks mine.

Classy guy – ignore the bought and paid for media.

    1. Gretzky is a good dude.
I’ve had two encounters with him.
First time was during the dynasty years. Me and my wife were coming in the front doorway of a popular restaurant, just as Wayne, Mess and the boys were leaving. Wayne had his head turned and bumped into me pretty solidly. He said. “Oh. I’m really sorry, man” and he looked like he felt bad about it.
Second time was circa 2012. We were at a birthday lunch for our secretary, and Wayne was at the bar. I approached him and asked if he would take a photo with our secretary as a birthday treat, and he was happy to do so, plus chat with us for a bit.
When I thanked him, he said “No problem, eh?” Like a Canuck would.
So, in my view, he is a nice, unassuming , Canuck dude.

      1. Awesome … TBH that’s exactly how his persona comes off … looking from afar.

Nice brush(es) with greatness! Don’t know if my stories will measure up to yours when we have those cocktails;)

        1. Kenji, Wayne is solid. I know a small town Ontario guy when I meet one, me being a small town Ontario boy, who even played hockey as a kid.
As for our cocktail stories, I am sure we will be tit for tat, especially if we compare our knowledge of shared music circa 63 to 79. My guess is that you have me trumped in that category, albeit we will find out. To spur it, do you recall a band that Randy California had after Spirit? Queue the Jeopardy jingle.

          1. No … but it sticks in my mind that he did extend his career past Spirit. Now you’ve made me go to my search engine 🙂

          2. Ha! That sounds about right for Mssr. California …

BTW it’s a BEAUTIFUL 79 deg.F with a gentle breeze off the ocean here in the backyard of my daughters Orange County beach community. Catching up with the grand boys growin like weeds.

Shorts and flip flops – sweet!

          3. Down east here, Sid Crosby is the same, great guy, not quite in Gretzky’s rarified air, but pretty good.

    2. I liked his joke. He mentioned that when he broke Howes record the owner bought Gretzky a Rolls Royce, then wondered what the Caps owner would do for OV

    1. 100%. Gretzky had 1,963 assists as well, Ovie has 724.
Ovie is tougher for sure, but I think I’d much rather have 99.

      1. To put Gretzky’s assists total in some kind of context – no other player in NHL history has that many POINTS.

And nobody ever will again. Just to get within striking distance of Gretzky’s points total, a player would have to average 140 points a year for 20 straight years. To put that number in context, only two players since Gretzky retired have even reached 140 points, and each of them have only done it ONCE (thus far, anyway; they’re both still active).

        1. For sure! Another couple of things to consider- when he turned pro in ’78 and played 2 seasons in the WHA, that production isn’t included in the (NHL) record book. Then his next four seasons after joining the NHL, there’s still no overtime in regular season games, so in all likelyhood his output would be even more impressive had it been in effect?
How much did Ovie feed on OT to pad his stats? A lot.

  7. Congrats to Ovechkin…I honestly didn’t think that record would be broken in my lifetime.
The kid is no shrinking violet either…likes to get up close and personal every so often which makes him a bigger threat.

“Records were meant to be broken” So true and there are some records that’ll never be broken.
Barring divine intervention I doubt very much we’ll ever see a 30 game winner in baseball again as we witnessed with Denny McLain who performed the feat in the 1968 season. Truth be told he won 31 games.

  8. Of the top 50 most goals by a team in a season – none are after 2000.

Gretzky played in a higher scoring era, ovi in lower scoring – which makes the fact ovi broke the record even more remarkable.

    1. Was about to make a similar comment. Doesn’t take anything away from either player. I remember Gretsky as a playmaker who scored a lot of goals because he’s probably the GOAT. But nobody scored goals like Orr and Howe and Bossy and Lemieux. You have to tip your hat to Ovi, a pure goal scorer. It will be a long time before his record is broken.

  9. If it takes a player of Ovechkin’s talent to beat Gretzky’s goals record it tells you a lot about Gretzky.

  10. So how soon do we get to smear shit on statues of Ovechkin? I gather it’s the done thing these days.
