Sylvain Charlebois- Canada keeps losing at geopolitics, and farmers pay the price
Canada has walked itself into an unnecessary trade war with the United States’ biggest geopolitical rival, China.
The consequences are clear: new retaliatory tariffs from China are directly targeting our farmers, affecting over $3-billion worth of agrifood commodities and products.
These measures are a direct response to Canada’s decision to impose a 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles in October, a move designed to align with U.S. trade policy and shield the North American auto sector from low-cost competition.

As if electric vehicles had any relevance in Canada.
Falling on your sword for no reason.
Foot, meet bullet.
It’s a feature not a bug
All of this reminds me of a Simpson’s character. Sideshow Bob.
After making elaborate plans to kill Bart he’d often be seen wandering in a yard, stepping on rakes.
Hitting himself in the face which only increased his impotent rage.
STOP the diesel tractors and poisonous chemical fertilizers NOW! Congrats “green” Canadian politicians! STOP modern food production. It’s making us all sick … (sic). Right!? Oh … and STOP all livestock production too! Starve the peasants out.
They will be a long time starving us out sonny
Like their ChiCom masters … they’re playing the LONG game.
A record high visits to food banks, a scurvy outbreak…I think you’ve been doing a great job of starving yourselves out all on your own.
The EU will likely lean on Canada more for food; guess what that does to the price of your groceries?
We will not have to do a thing; you will do this to yourselves with some help from your friends.
Protect the Eastern Auto sector at the expense of Western Agriculture… pretty much par for expectations from our Federal gov’t.
I don’t think your comment has anything to do with the subject here. Canadian tariffs in line with American policy vs Chinese tariffs targeting Canadian Agri.
Shrug. To a great extent farmers can thank their own bought-and-paid-for organizations for the messes they’re in.
I don’t think your comment has anything to do with the subject here. Sask Canola vs Chinese cars in case you didn’t read the article.
Yeah. I read it. My comment stands.
agree,, from a former ont fed of ag director
I’m sure if the farmers started dealing in fentanyl they’d get better treatment.
Probably.
The Chinese know that nobody who has any choice (that is, anyone not forced to live in China or in a Chinese vassal state) will buy their sparky cars, which are tofu-dreg quality death-traps. Sparky cars are not how they get the blue-eyed devils to pay for the Chinese war machine.
The biggest businesses of the Chinese Communist Party and their proxy enterprises are helping heartbroken American men to commit suicide with synthetic opiates and helping American women squander their birthright left behind by their fathers on cat toys and spy-phones designed to broadcast CCP propaganda to gullible American women 24/7/365 (via TikTok).
And before Trump returned to the White House, business had never been better.
And police protection, probably.
Frank Drebbin, is that you?
Well screw the West. When will western politicians wake up? They sure love getting screwed.
Scott Moe
@PremierScottMoe
Federal Minister Champagne says Canada will not remove EV tariffs that have resulted in Chinese canola tariffs because:
“We want to protect our industries. We want to protect our workers. We want to protect our communities.”
Here is my response to that.
What about Saskatchewan workers in Saskatchewan communities in the Saskatchewan canola industry?
Team Canada can’t just mean Team Quebec.
You should know by now that Team Canada means Team Quebec + Ontario.
You’re a special kind of stupid Prem Moe.
Scott – let’s see the numbers. How many Chinese EV cars were sold in Canada last year?
So we are willing to sell out those poor farmers who already have bought seed, etc. for the sake of exactly how many $ in sales of Chinese EVs?
The devil is in the details, and I would sure like to know some of them. You said we are going to “protect our workers.” So….how many Chinese made vehicles are we talking here?
Fighting a war of egos on two frontiers with the two largest economies in the world sounds like a wonderful opportunity. Way to go Canada!
“Align with US trade policy.” So they did this because they were trying to take President Trump for the blithering idiot that he only is in the globalist imagination.
What Trump wants is for the Chinese satellite state next door to be replaced by something that isn’t a threat to US national security. If Mark Carney won’t do the job, Trump will cheerfully send a few good men to do it for him.
So Mark needs to decide, and soon, how badly he wants to die in an American prison, because as US troops encircle Ottawa, the absolute least of the worries of the Red Chinese spies destroying everything incriminating in their St. Patrick Street hideout will be saving the skin of some old white man who used to be China’s vassal.
You have sick fantasies.
This has been going on for as long as Canada was a nation. Liberals are not supported in the west and that will continue into the next election. Anything over 5 seats from Winnipeg to Vancouver would be a gift for the liberals. It’s Ontario and Quebec more than ever and I’m expecting they will offer Quebec the keys to the country for remaining in power. If the liberals are given a new mandate, with the eastern only support, we will see dysfunction at a whole new level.
I agree we in the West must separate! Canada was a great country but the Liberals, NDP ,and Quebec have ruined it!
Canada is too big to be a country.
Europe is just over 10 million sq km.
They have 44 countries.
Canada has 9.9 million sq km.
We need to split up and form our own countries based on culture, demographs, and economic interests.
BTW, Europe has a population of 744 million.
Etymological fun with tariffs

The stupid Liberals walk the West into this dust up with China to save Eastern Canada’s electric vehicles . Just a question have they sold any?
I think Francisco the value of the crop loss could be closer to 4.5 billion!
Look at all the “conservatives” clamoring for trade with China, even as they look down their noses at some poor slob who takes a cheap vacation in Cuba.
Canada is entirely populated with virtue signaling Karens, and therefore utterly cooked.
Canada is no longer viable as a neighbour of the US. The fentanyl, CCP ownership of government, and the open borders money laundering are not fixable without outside intervention. Canada is a failed state.
The US has 100% tariff on Chinese EV’s as well. But, there are additional restrictions that bar the sale of Chinese autos in the US. I hope Canada has those too, or you are just going to get steamrolled even with a 100% tariff.
There are three major Chinese auto makers in Mexico at present. Their goal is to take over the Central and South American auto industry. Their ultimate goal is to sell in the US and Canada and put the domestic car makers in the grave.
For example, the Chinese company BYD makes a hatchback EV that has a 5 star safety rating (although, you can take that with a grain of salt). The BYD car is called a Dolphin. The selling price should raise eyebrows. On average $15k to $17k. So even with a 100% mark-up from tariffs it’s still significantly cheaper than anything the US or Canada produces. That’s why I hope Canada has other restrictions in place.
Not really. Base price on a Subaru Forester is ~ $31,000 USD.
Foresters are hybrids. Not a pure EV. At least, the 2025 offering is. It’s, also, Japanese.
How about a 200% tariff on fetanyl precursor chemicals?
Then the Chinese would send them in for free; and have little difficulty getting their customers to take that deal.
Watch that tariff on Chinese EVs come off right quick as Eastern Canada looks for something to replace all the US auto plants we’re driving away.
That and Canadians will need access to some sort of car to get around and after a few years of 25% tariffs, cheap, unsafe, unsound Chinese EVs will be the only thing we can afford.
I’ll be getting my next car from Amazon if the Liberals have their way.
Not in Quebec.
They raped the Lion electric bus company.
The swedish battery plant is dead.
Bombardier airplanes given to Airbus.
Where’s Pornhub based?
Je suis Jacques Canadien!
I’m reminded of something Jefferson wrote
“will tolerate their abuses while their abuses are tolerable”
The decision makers of upper and lower Canada never seem to feel the effects of their decisions experienced by those outside upper and lower Canada.
Smith and Moe are going to have to get off the fence, or perhaps they will just stay up there, hanging on to the top rail and rot.
That’s were you’re at.
Another unforced error by the Bong and the LPC.
They are more concerned about their future than Canada’s. It’s about survival of the LPC. Canada’s interest doesn’t come into the equation.
“Meanwhile, the United States is also taking an aggressive stance against Canada, unprovoked, further complicating trade relations.”
“unprovoked” Kanadians still being the unrepentant nuisance pest. “I dindinuffin. He just went ballistic for no reason!
