  1. Want better health care like they have in the US?

    Per person cost of health care (in USD)
    United States = 13,432
    Switzerland = 9688
    Norway = 8996
    Germany = 8441

    Canada = 7013

    1. That’s called “being rich”, joe. The US can afford to spend a lot more on healthcare than we can. The Canadian figure is low because our currency is barely worth the plastic its printed on.

      Canada has the worst healthcare in the Western world. It doesn’t matter how much it costs if you end up dying on a wait list like thousands do here every year.

      1. Steve

        In 2011, 1 CAD = 1.01 USD

        Per person health care cost in 2011

        US = 8600
        Can = 5423

        So it’s not just the exchange rate.

        We want better US style health care it will cost more money.

        As far as being richer, perhaps we both agree that Liberal NDP policies have made the country poorer.

        Perhaps we both also agree that massive immigration without a corresponding increase in the number of doctors is a contributing factor.

        Is the medical pharma complex bloated and inefficient in Canada? Yep.
        Is it in the US? Kennedy seems to think so.

        Steve, I’d be interested in your thoughts on how to get better health care in Canada.

  2. If only there were an economic system that allowed producers and consumers to put respective values on goods and services in such a manner that scarcity, abundance, need for increased production, etc could all be evaluated by all of the players involved and responded to appropriately. LOL. Yes, of course that would be FREE MARKET CAPITALISM… something neither Canada, Europe, NOR THE US have any respect or desire for. Socialism, crony capitalism, government protectionism, cartelization of markets, etc appear to be all that are allowed. But then no wonder medical systems are failing globally.

  3. There are 2 major problems with public healthcare as it is in Canada.

    One: the cost to the consumer is nil. Imagine if the cost of gasoline, $1.50/litre, was paid for by everyone but the consumer. How much waste in that system would there be? Incalculable, really!

    Two: there is no pricing mechanism in the entire healthcare system. When demand for health services in one specific area rise or fall, prices should adjust to reflect those changes and to signal to markets whether investments are needed or not.

    Without the 2 crucial free market mechanisms in place, public healthcare shall continue on to its Soviet demise.

    The public unions rule healthcare. Until they are confronted and tamed, nothing will change.

    1. “One: the cost to the consumer is nil.”
      I would disagree.
      The cost is immense 50% of all tax dollars collected.
      This is what makes tax payers so angry, after paying in advance for decades,they discover there is no healthcare there.
      Two I agree,no honest pricing mechanism.
      Care provided by a bureaucracy will never have compassion or concern for the patient.
      Stand Operating Procedure ,waste and destruction will always dominate.
      And cost signals get the same treatment.
      Public Healthcare was an impossible dream and staggers on propped up by massive debt,lies and murder.
      MAID being the perfect example.
