Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

it’s like the line in Godfoddah (II?) mike is eluding to ‘going legitimate’
How does labeling the cartels ‘terrorists’ hurt the US economy?
Bust all the drug lords and their henchmen and bling sales will tank.
Hardest hit will be

Can’t have that now, can we?
There’s just no talking to these people.
Yeah, yeah, yeah … and the Cartels “pick our vegetables” … “clean our hotel rooms” and “wash our dishes” … riiiiiight. Didn’t I just hear some butch Episcopal ahhhh Rev-er-and lecture Trump about that? Amigo Puhleeze!
I’m glad I wasn’t in the audience. Gotta give the VP and his wife kudos for being able to restrain themselves after that racist tirade.
The New York Times Company has a dual-class share structure. Class A shares have greatly reduced voting rights. Class B shares have almost all the voting rights
Slim owns 6.1% of Class A shares. The Ochs-Sulzberger family has 95% of Class B shares, and so has complete control of the company.
Bottom line: Slim has no say in NYT governance.
I don’t think that was the point, KM. It’s the fact that Slim has a financial interest in the NYT that’s bothersome. No one is suggesting that Slim is adding editorial content, or in some way influencing what gets published in the NYT. It’s the fact that he owns shares in the NYT to begin with that’s concerning, and that fact alone suggests some kind of conflict of interest.
It’s the NYT that has decided to take an interest in Slim’s affairs, perhaps because he partly owns the newspaper.
I can’t see where the conflict of interest comes in. The management of the NYT probably doesn’t care who owns their Class A shares. It doesn’t affect anything.
Well, the Board of Directors of the company who owns a majority of its shares can probably fire any of the management and writers of the NYT. Especially, if the paper isn’t making any money.
The Board of Directors is determined by the Ochs-Sulzberger family. They’re in control. I don’t see how Slim can tell them what to do.
Yeah, money doesn’t buy influence.
Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t. In this instance, there’s no leverage Slim can apply to influence the NYT.
Again, KM, you appear to be missing the point. It’s not about Slim exercising influence. Obviously, he cannot, well, technically he can’t.
It’s about Slim owning a portion of the NYT, and that fact alone may may be enough to influence the majority owners into doing things and saying things that are favorable to Slim.
Let’s flip this around.
Would the majority owners say or do anything against Slim’s interest, knowing that he owns a significant portion of their own newspaper?
The only people who count here are the Ochs-Sulzberger family, as they have complete control of the company.
Are they influenced by the fact that Slim owns 6% of the Class A shares? I doubt it. First, it’s not THAT impressive, and second, who owns the Class A shares is probably of little concern to them.
Stop being autistic, rodent. If Slim owns 6.1 % of the class A shares, he has an interest in the company and those class A shares are not the only lever he has to exert influence on the NYT. Nobody in their right mind buys shares in a modern news organization because they expect to make a decent ROI. They buy the shares because they expect to influence the news.
Daniel Ream doesn’t know how corporate governance works.
Having a 6% of NYT class-A shares buys Slim the right to collect dividends and nothing else. He has no say or leverage in how the company is run. None. Zero. He can make requests, of course, but there’s no reason why the board or management should respond to those requests.
Don’t get mad at me. Get mad at Wall Street Mav, who either didn’t do his homework or felt that such details would spoil a good story. He manipulated you. I told you the facts.
In Canada, shares that are held purely as status symbols are sometimes called “Class, eh?” shares.
If Trump doe it the NYT will be against it.
The Times they are a changing…
To paraphrase the Turd, “If we kill them, we win.”
Criminal groups also operate in sectors like politics.

The NYT is a group of depraved, terrorist loving, liars.
Their protection from defamation under the SCOTUS Sullivan decision must be vacated.
You might be wondering why a billionaire with (alleged) ties to Mexican drug cartels would buy a controlling interest in a respected, money-losing American newspaper.
Slim does not have a controlling interest in the NYT. He has 6% of the Class A shares, which have reduced voting rights. The Ochs-Sulzberger family has most of the voting rights, and thus has complete control of the corporate governance.
Thanks KM for clarifying.
The linked-to article is, IMO, highly deceptive. Whether deliberately or from carelessness I can’t say.
Wasn’t it El Salvador where the economists said jailing all the thugs would tank the economy by 30%, and instead it increased by 5-10%?
