The Great Fake H1-B Controversy
Sigmund Freud had a term for it—the “narcissism of small differences”.
In this case, Wikipedia explains it well: “… the more a relationship or community shares commonalities, the more likely the people in it are to engage in interpersonal feuds and ridicule because of hypersensitivity to minor differences.”
We all recognize this pattern that manifests in various ways from the bickering of married couples to successful rock bands breaking up. The most minor disputes explode into major ones that no one wanted in the first place with sometimes disastrous results.
This fits the internal MAGA dispute over H1-B visas to the proverbial T. The only ones who profit from this kerfuffle, or whatever it is, are the left and their fading media allies, desperate for something to latch onto about MAGA and create dissension.
Do we want to give them that privilege at this point? Frankly, I think it’s stupid, especially for a disagreement that would likely work itself out almost automatically and favorably for almost all concerned anyway.

H1-B visas are fine. Sometimes you get someone good, sometimes you don’t, but they are temporary and their going through an official, legal process.
We need workers until we can get our own young people off their butts and working.
the h1-b are not temporary, the h2-b are temporary – and all economics start with immigration
H1-B visas are a scam to import workers who will work for half, and 12 hours a day, with the hope they will get a green card after 5 years, and then chain migration begins and you wonder what happened to your country.
What will get young people, especially young men off their butts is elimination of DEI from school and from corporate America. Straight white males and just behind them straight white females have the deck stacked against them out of the gate, so only the exceptional get through unless born lucky. Level the playing field, what a novel concept.

Well said, Peter. That’s exactly right.
Vivek Ramaswamy, for all his skill as a speaker, was 100% correct when he made his points about ‘culture’ being the big difference between Americans and the third world when it comes to achievement and excellence (and thus the need for H1Bs). What he failed to mention was *why* the American students are falling behind relative to the imported ones: it’s the DEI roadblocks that sabotage their efforts to enter the STEM fields, not laziness or lack of ambition.
“I think it’s stupid, especially for a disagreement that would likely work itself out almost automatically…”
Not adequate.

The narcissism of small differences… this explains so much. Like why Canada has pretty much torn itself to pieces when we should be working to shore up the country. Thank you for enlightening me!
I agree with the concept, but the differences in Canada are not small. Not at all. Socialism and capitalism differences are fundamental, as are collectivism and individualism. Canada has become a collectivist country, and has lowered the common denominator to pure mediocrity. Beggar thy neighbour is the ethos of Canada, rather than striving.
PS. I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again- my immigration policy for the US is hockey players and their WAGS- and possibly their children! This supposes that Canada becomes our 51st state…
I’m a little early on a prediction but here goes. A fight between President Musk and VP Trump is inevitable. It’s probably already started and if it hasn’t, why not?
Trump’s strategy is doomed. He thinks these oligarchs are going to help him. The US isn’t Russia. The oligarchs are completely unskilled when it comes to politics. Getting things done in a democracy requires compromise.
Just because you have all 3 levels of government on side doesn’t mean there aren’t influence players in the game. 50 governors who will immediately attack if their ox is being gored. Industry leaders will do the same. All this with mid terms looming.
The Dems are cunning. They will set traps and confound Trump every step of the way. He will need a united strategy in order to achieve anything. Nobody likes a fight more than a Conservative. They’d rather win an argument than win an election.
I didn’t think the MAGA crowd would fall upon each other as quickly as they have. They didn’t even last until swearing in. It’s going to be very interesting.
‘Conservatives would rather win an argument than an election’. Nice insight. it reminds me of another concept: Many Canadians would rather their Country wither to the point of death than give up their “free things”. It’s like an addiction.
” A fight between President Musk and VP Trump is inevitable.”
Wow…right from the Democrat Talking Points.
“The Dems are cunning. They will set traps and confound Trump every step of the way.”
They might try, but they will fail. Trump is many things, but stupid is not one of them…he has learned from his previous mistakes, as have the people around him.
“I didn’t think the MAGA crowd would fall upon each other as quickly as they have. ”
They haven’t. You fell for their attempt to drive a wedge into the MAGA crowd, as they knew you would.
“They didn’t even last until swearing in. It’s going to be very interesting.”
What’s going to be interesting will be the mad scrambling among the Democrats to jump on the Trump bandwagon once the investigations begin. THAT will be fun, for sure.
Good comment, Fred.
“Good comment, Fred.”
Thanks, cgh. I just have little patience with those who would so swallow the Democrat and MSM (but I repeat myself) bait hook, line and sinker….
… ship all steel & aluminum plants to China, turn all manufacturing jobs overseas, outsource STEM work to third world while importing STEM employees. The chinks have us coming and going. Trump is aware.
The only purpose is to get more work for half the pay. In a country with thousands of universities including most of the world’s top tier there is no such thing as a shortage of skilled workers. There is a shortage of skilled people willing to work for shit wages.
From Michael Shellenberger’s Substack “Public” about an hour ago:
“Trump advisors Elon Musk and David Sacks said they supported changing the rules around H-1B visas to raise the minimum salary and to make it more expensive to hire a foreign worker than an American citizen.”
IF that were done — if it cost companies more to hire an engineer from Singapore or Belgium than to hire an American — then what conceivable reason would there be to bring someone over other than to get the best talent?
The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Border Policy:
1. Legal immigration, beneficial, controllable
2. Chain migration – nonsense, uncontrollable.
3. Illegal migration, not beneficial, uncontrollable.
4. “Progressives” conflate it all for power.
To stop 4, pick 1as required, but not 2 or 3. Deport the illegal idiots as they come up on the radar. The End.
If Republicans drop the border ball, they won’t just hurt their Congressional fortunes, they’ll hurt their nation.
“…a disagreement that would likely work itself out almost automatically and favorably for almost all concerned anyway.”
Yes indeedy. The big corpos will get their cheap labor, and Americans can expect good salaries after graduating.
LOL!
Thank the toxic DeSantis Bros for this public fight. They’ll be spending the next several years tearing down Trump out of pique.
I think this is all on Musk. He made some pretty dumb tweets, and then followed that up by censoring some of his detractors on X.
He has since moderated his position, I think Trump or one of his staff gave him a good talking to.
The proliferation of H1b Visas is hardly a “small difference” of opinion. Because they no longer are used as originally intended. They are not being used just to recruit TOP talent from a worldwide labor pool … but used for recruiting cheap, pliable, average workers. Don’t believe it? Just ask all the Disney Tech. workers who were “laid-off” … then made to TRAIN their replacements if they wanted severance pay. And that scenario has been repeated all over America in every type of tech business.
My own sister-in-law was made to train her replacement at Oracle after working there for 30 years. Yeah, her replacement hailed from a nation where people still shit in the streets, and the stench is unbearable.

My thoughts as well, Kenji.
Don’t do away with the program…FIX it. Make it operate as intended, and punish any who attempt to abuse it for financial gain.
From my perspective we can expect more of the same. I haven’t believed they would let Trump be president and they will surely make it very difficult to govern. So who are they? Well the Democrats for one. But the bigger problem is Republicans, a number of whom have no doubt had their hands in the cookie jar or the Honey pot. And they will do what they are told to do.
Americans voted for change, and unlike a lot of Canadians on principles (rather than against the other guys). A lot of people believe in America first, h1b are not that.
Hopefully the MAGA’S work it out with the oligarchs. Conservatives like a public fight.
Anybody following Steve Bannon? He’s rippin’ Musk. This disagreement isn’t working itself out amicably. Bannon is ready to go full Jake Paul with Musk.
As always … I’m with Bannon.
“As always … I’m with Bannon.”
Me too, usually. But he seems to be opposing both Musk *and* Trump here, which concerns me slightly.
Trump did not think it was a fake controversy in 2016.

We aren’t looking to exchange one set of know-nothing-elitist tyrants for another. Anyone who dives into the corrupt morass of H-1B visas realizes the system must be overhauled beyond recognition or cut.
The US H1B visa program is broken and abused. This isn’t a minor disagreement; it cuts to the heart of whether the so-called leaders of MAGA really believe in America First or not. It’s a litmus test on whether the tech-bros understand what ordinary Americans are facing. Fuck their bottom line if it means they destroy the US middle class and sabotage our culture.
