U.S. President Joe Biden has authorized Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied long-range missiles to strike deeper inside Russia, easing limitations on the weapons as Russia deploys thousands of North Korean troops to reinforce its war, according to a U.S. official and three other people familiar with the matter.
The decision allowing Kyiv to use the Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMs, for attacks farther inside Russia comes as President Vladimir Putin positions North Korean troops along Ukraine’s northern border to try to reclaim hundreds of miles of territory seized by Ukrainian forces.
Biden’s move also follows the presidential election victory of Donald Trump, who has said he would bring about a swift end to the war and raised uncertainty about whether his administration would continue the United States’ vital military support for Ukraine.
The official and the others knowledgeable about the matter were not authorized to discuss the U.S. decision publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s reaction Sunday was notably restrained.
“Strikes are not made with words,” he said during his nightly video address. “Such things are not announced. The missiles will speak for themselves.”

Try to keep up. The primary target of ATACMS in that conflict are the Russian’s most effective weapons system. That happens to be their long range glide bombs (which Ukraine has no answer to). Over 90% of those aircraft were pulled outside of the range (about 200 miles) of any ATACMS the US is moving into the theater. Russia has already pulled them back in advance of Biden’s latest stupidity.

Storm Cloud missiles cost about $1.2 million each. The reports I saw suggested they were sending about 300 to Ukraine. So, about $320 Million (which is on the low side of what truly costs).

You may remember over the summer when Ukraine, without saying how they did it, blew up a number of Russian ammunition depots. They also hit some Russian radar sites that were, if memory serves, well over 1000 km inside Russia. I have no doubt that this was when Ukraine showed they had access to long range weapons.
This was also when Putin announced that any additional action on these lines would signal to Russia that NATO was directly involved in the war, and NATO assets would then be considered for retaliatory strikes. After that the long range strikes seemed to stop. Message received apparently, but now, if this starts up again I fear what may happen. Will Russia flatten London? Not likely, but it is possible that satellite systems might suddenly be blinded. Whatever the result, this is moving the war in a very dangerous direction.
