A Crack in Trudeau’s Rainbow-coloured Iron Curtain

NATO is not happy with Lil’ Justin:

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Canada’s failure to hit the NATO target came up in meetings Trudeau held Monday and Tuesday with American politicians, and that the government was aware that Canada is being “called out” for falling short as the alliance gathered in Washington to mark its 75th anniversary at a time of global tensions and war in Europe.

The discussions were taking place as the Canadian delegation fielded criticism over the lack of a clear plan to increase Ottawa’s military spending to at least two per cent of Canada’s gross domestic product (GDP). With Russia’s war in Ukraine, American pressure and increasing competition between the West and China fuelling a drive across the alliance towards military expansion, a growing number of NATO’s 32 members are hitting that two-per-cent target — more than 20 by the end of this year, according to NATO’s most recent estimate. But Canada remains near the bottom of the list, with military spending equivalent to 1.37 per cent of its GDP, the NATO estimate says.

Others around the world are noticing.

    1. U.N. membership would be more appropriate.
If all federal employees compensation packages (wages, vacations, early retirement, and pensions) more closely matched that of the private sector, Canada could probably meet its NATO commitments.

  1. Well … the good news for Canada is that perhaps Russia won’t target quite as many Canadian cities and facilities in the coming WWIII nuclear free-for-all. Biden, err Obama is about to unleash on the world.

Who could have imagined? The hippie generation who preached love, not war … are celebrating 75 years of an organization whose sole purpose was rendered unnecessary with the fall of the Soviet Union. Oh! Wait. Putin refuses to bow a knee to the LGBTQueer culture of these ex-hippies … so WWIII it is …

  2. Well, with multi billion dollar socialist programs being announced every time dipshit embarrasses himself, this government is getting too costly to have a military. National programs for dental, pharma, and now school lunches. What’s next? A national weed program?

  3. Judging from his ass kissing media, he/she seems to be spending most of his time talking about global warming.

    1. Completely understandable. They ascribe to global warming all those symptoms that can be explained by too many noses in turdo’s arse-crack at the same time.

  4. The CAF is throwing money at all the wrong things. First and foremost is DEI. By applauding trans people in uniform to openly flaunt their mental illness, the population that recruiters have relied upon to fill the ranks of the military are reluctant to join or even repelled from joining. Second, the societal-wide, decades-long attack on “maleness” or the exhibition of male traits such as competitiveness, aggressiveness, physicality, etc–have been detrimental to the minds of young males–they’re literally afraid to display these traits for fear of being tagged as anti-social. Further to that, young men have to tip-toe around their female course-mates in fear of being hit with a sexual harassment complaint, which would lead to all sorts of career implications or worst actual time behind bars. Third, the training system for the different specialties and trades in the military is SEVERELY backed up. As an example, in order for a military pilot to become operational on his/her aircraft it can take up to three years AFTER the pilot completes basic flight training. For vehicle mechanics, the wait is even longer. And, the RCN which has always suffered when it comes to recruiting and desire for the members, both officers and non-commissioned members, to stay in for a full career–they are hurting really bad. The RCN is literally running out of sailors to crew the ships/boats they currently have.

    1. Agree with all the above. But pilot training has always been a shit show. Pilots are their own worse enemies.

  5. kick us out.
    We deserve it.
It can serve as a message to all – as the Russians come in over the North Pole.

    1. “It can serve as a message to all – as the Russians come in over the North Pole.”

Why would they? They already have 1/5th of the land mass of the world within their own borders. Invasions happen from people without resources, like for example Europe, to people loaded with them, like for example, Russia. Water runs downhill and invasions run towards resources.

  6. Liberal incompetence aside, why is Canada still a member of NATO? The Soviet Union is gone and so should NATO be gone — its purpose was to prevent communist Russia from making further incursions into Western Europe. Russia is not our enemy now; ironically it is NATO acting on behalf of the Western Billionaires Club that threatens not just Russia but freedom throughout the West.

Disclaimer: I am half Ukrainian .. and I weep for my mother’s people who are suffering and dying needlessly, victims of Western warmongers.

  7. There was a time when the Canadian military was very respected. Unfortunately, the downturn really began under the Pierre Trudeau “government”. My brother was in the RCAF in the 1960’s and was stationed at 3 and 4 Wing in Germany during the Cold War. I recall Lloyd Axworthy in the Chretien government coming up with the laughable phrase “soft power” to cover up the ongoing destruction of the Canadian military. It is a kick in the teeth to those who were in the Canadian military when it knew what its mission was.

    1. Lloyd Axworthy’s Flaccid Power wasn’t fooling anyone… and certainly didn’t help during the Rwanda Debacle

  8. Canada is to NATO what Uranus is to the solar system – a big cold & gassy place that everyone laughs at.

  9. This is going to be Solar System War I, because now Biden said in his speech at the NATO summit that Russia is determined to take over Uranus.

  10. Canada and Belgium are the only 2 members of NATO which spend less than 2% of GDP on military spending, AND less than 20% of that amount on military equipment. CBC is saying Canada spends 1.37% of GDP on military, others here in the past have noted that Canada also counts military pensions as part of their military spending and this is apparently against the rules but nobody seriously counts that when they’re so far off the mark it doesn’t even matter..
Canada hasn’t met its 2% of GDP commitment since 1988 when Brian Mulroney was PM.

scroll down here, some interesting graphs on tier 2 Canada
    https://www.nato.int/nato_static_fl2014/assets/pdf/2024/6/pdf/240617-def-exp-2024-en.pdf

When the gov’t of tier 2 Canada makes an announcement of expenditures on military they always quote the dollar amount, say its millions, say its billions, it doesn’t matter. Canada underfunds NATO by about $10 to $20 billion each year and has for decades… When they see military spending is in the news, the gov’t of the day announces they’re going to “make changes” and plan for spending X amount in order to make up for their past. It always sounds like a “big number”, but in terms of percentage of what tier 2 Canada promised, it’s never close. Then they’re defeated, a new gov’t comes to power and says, “we need to cut this, and spend here instead” and continuing the wankerness that is central to Canada’s being. Then an event occurs on the other side of the planet, tier 2 Canada sends troops with garbage equipment and declares that Canada fights above its weight division or some other nonsense.

Want to change that? GDP = X
    X times 2% = an amount
Spend that amount, and of that amount, spend 20% on equipment, and move all pension funding to whoever pays out the MP’s pension amounts, as they’re ALWAYS UP TO DATE ON PAYMENTS.
Never mention again, how they’re going to spend $ amount on military. The NATO agreement is to spend 2% of GDP, not “billions”.
If tier 2 Canada can’t sign a deal with NATO to continue its end of the bargain, hopefully the other nation states will make note, and ask tier 2 Canada to exit from NATO.

Canada underfund its military, by more than 1 nuclear aircraft carrier PER YEAR. $10 billion each year. Last decade it was more, like close to $15 billion. Can you imagine the east coast Irving family companies building a nuclear aircraft carrier each year? What? Will Santa Claus be helping on this? Canada can’t build a pipeline on time on budget, and now I’m suggesting they build actual nuke powered carriers?
How about nuclear powered icebreakers like Russia has? Those would be useful. Perhaps tier 2 Canada could buy 2 from Russia?

Instead, we get billions wasted on garbage parliament buildings, and 24 Sussex Drive is almost uninhabitable, as if I care what that dump looks like inside.

A nation of wankers, led by intergenerational welfare wankers who don’t speak real English
    “let it burn” …

    1. When other nations around the globe are negotiating to sign an agreement with tier 2 Canada, they should always say to the press:
“Why would we sign an agreement with tier 2 Canada when you’ve only met your spending commitment to NATO for maybe 10 years out of the 80 years that NATO has existed, and when you do spend, it’s likely you’re cheating on that by including military pensions as spending too?”

How many years would you stay married if your spouse was cheating on you for 80% of the years, and then said, “next year I’ll do better” ?

      lol… well that’s Canada.

    2. The biggest impediment to Canada spending on the military is its procurement system. You could drop $100B in front of DND HQ tomorrow, and it would be 20 years until they would have something to show for it. The government’s own financial and procurement policies make it impossible for the government to implement its own defence policy.

    1. The problem is getting the assholes in procurement to do their fckn jobs.
12 years to buy pistols is sickening.
Harper couldn’t/wouldn’t change the system that deliberately moves at glacial speed.
DND and the assholes at Public Works need to be purged.
      After they’re horse-whipped.

  11. It is actually America’s war in Ukraine. And NATO membership dictates munitions purchases from NATO (mostly American) manufacturers.

Imagine a gated community that used to have a very dangerous family but now they are much more sedate. One neighbour continually goads that family into conflict and then insists that all the other neighbours to continue to band together to fight this “threat”. As part of this you have to spend 2% (why 2%?) of your household income on weapons sold by the agitator.

That’s how I see the situation.

  12. The passing story amongst Calgary cabbies is that substantial numbers of troops from most NATO countries have been arriving in town and heading out to Suffield, where an intervention fork is being assembled and trained for action in Ukraine. So maybe we are about to reveal that we’re contributing a lot after all. More likely, of course, it’s just bullshit.
