I’d be curious to discover how much of this money is in DIRECT PAYMENTS to the homeless in the form of welfare checks? I suspect a big chunk of that money is simply GIVEN to the homeless which enables them to live on the streets … buy some hits of drugs without theft and burglary … OK, without MORE theft and burglary … and essentially perpetuate their homelessness.

The population of the old town of Ponta del Gada, capital of the Azores, is about 18,000. Blessed with a beautiful year-round climate and tourist dollars it is a magnet for street bums from all over Europe. You can’t walk a block without getting pestered multiple times. They’re on duty outside hotel lobbies at 7:00 am. It’s as bad as downtown Ottawa.
We brought the subject up with a young man who was our guide on an island tour. “We have a perfectly good shelter and food for them, but they are on the street because they don’t like the shelter rules. But our politicians tell the police to leave them alone because the problem is not enough homes. (Head shake) every year it gets worse.”

I had a bipolar son who I struggled to get into safe, secure, housing (apart from ours … hey! at age 34, it was time to move on). He couldn’t abide by the rules of any landlord, apartment complex, or even Hostel (that required residents be in by 10pm). Why? Because he had a mental illness.
The VAST majority of our homeless have mental problems … and need to be housed APART from law-abiding, socialized, society … just as President Donald Trump has proposed … out in the CA deserts. Like retirees.

Once you allow the government to declare people mentally ill and incarcerate or medicate them against their will on that basis, it’s a short step to the government deciding that anyone who disagrees with their just and benevolent rule must be mentally ill.

I used to think (wayyy back in the day) that homeless people were a sort of canary in the coal mine for individual freedom.
Now they’ve become a bellwether for government malignance and gross incompetence.
And then there are the do-gooders: everyone in the poverty industry qualifies for immediate conviction and sentencing to C.A.G.E.
There are way too many ‘do-gooders’. And none of them do any good.

Just give 200 of them the keys to a downtown condo and a million bucks and see what happens. It’s probably better than whatever is going on now.

I’m genuinely curious to see what happens if you had a homeless lottery where you just pick a random bum and making him instantly wealthier than the average Canadian. Given there’s hundreds of bureaucrats involved they might even know which ones are the best ones to pick randomly. Or they’ll take a cut as the cash flies out the window.
