Daily Sceptic- Prostate Cancer Screening Doing “More Harm Than Good”, Study Finds

The largest study to date investigating the PSA (Prostate-specific antigen) blood test, which is used as a screening tool in some European countries, found it had a small impact on reducing deaths, but also led to a worrying level of over-diagnosis.

The results of the trial show that an estimated one in six cancers found by the single PSA screening were over-diagnosed leading to unnecessary treatment of tumours that would not have caused any harm in someone’s lifetime.

“However, this research highlights that a PSA test for early detection can do more harm than good – it’s simply not accurate enough and can lead to some men having tests and treatment that they don’t need.”

  1. Years ago I got sent for a biopsy due to an elevated PSA. No sign of anything abnormal with the specimens. I later read that mountain bike riders often have elevated PSA. In my case, that summer had been wet resulting in deep sprayer ruts across most fields. We had to swath canola at right angles to those ruts, so I spend the fall bouncing up and down and frequently bottoming out the seat suspension. Coincidentally, my blood test was immediately after harvest.

  2. I now “identify” as a woman … so I am scheduling an ohhhmommagram … not a daddy-o-gram

  3. SO how does that fit with “Prostate cancer rates to double by 2040” study that came out a couple days ago?

  4. and why do they have to light those candles just before the prostate exam?

  5. The PSA test is recommended in Ontario. OHIP doesn’t pay for it so there’s a $30 charge. My Dr mentioned that my PSA was a bit high last year and I’m awaiting the results from last month.
I’m starting to wonder if there is any medical test or pharmaceutical product that works.

  6. Nothing new here. At least Justin is putting his finger up his rear end every single day to make sure nothing untoward happens to his prostate.

  7. Turdo: “So, can you check my prostate, Doc?”

Doc: “Not till you get that big, bandaged hemorrhoid removed.”

  8. Wake up.
The medical industrial complex is not there to do no harm. Quite the contrary in theses inverted \, dismal days.
I learned that 50 years ago. Will spare you why.
However, if the last 4 years haven’t shown you that, then get yourself to another doctor for more of the same shite. See if I care.
Sincerely, Galen, the last to do no harm.

  9. Ovarian cancer has about the same track record: few symptoms and nothing found until stage 3 or 4.
