  1. The producers of Starship Troopers must be frustrated that their attempts to parody the far right went over people’s heads, even though they made it pretty obvious. One of the problems is that people responded positively to Heinlein’s idea that only those who are prepared to die for society should have a say in running society.

  2. I always hated starship troopers. Not for any political reason. Just because it was stupid.
You got spaceships that can travel to other solar systems, but the only weapons you have are useless little pop guns or nuclear bombs? Nothing in between. Where are the tanks? Or rockets full of VX? That stuff has got to work on bugs.

    1. All science fiction is stupid in some way.
Scrambling onto the back of a 300 foot subterranean worm, light sabres, ewoks, Vulcan neck pinch…
“Stupid” things like “Mynocks” make it great too.

Starship Troopers producer probably has two stories of it’s meaning, one for each of our present day political dynamic. He’s waiting to pivot to the next when It’s safer.
This article is a good explanation of the spectacular pwn of the raison d’etres he’ll abandon when it suits him.

      1. Star wars is another one. Evil fascist empire defeated by multicultural resistance.

        To paraphrase Randall from Clerks-

How many innocent civilians, construction workers, and independent contractors just trying to make a living were killed when terrorists blew up the second death star?

How many storm troopers do the terrorists kill/and or horribly disfigure in each episode? An awful lot for a PG movie. Laser burns seem like a painful life long disability, if one survives.

    2. I loved the movie, but only because I realised at once that this was not an attempt at filming the book, it was an attempt to imagine a Mad magazine parody of the book, and then film that. On that basis, it’s a delightful movie. Yes, it’s a disgraceful misrepresentation of the book, and yes, it’s chock full of idiocy, but that just adds to the fun, as it used to do in Mad magazine.

  3. Correct opinions……If anyone expresses an opinion that someone dislikes they can respond to the person expressing the opinion. Trying suppress an opinion shows me that someone is afraid of a lie being exposed.

  4. That Starship Troopers commentary is amazing. It puts to words what I have felt viscerally about that movie since I first saw it. Of course, my “say out loud” to friends critique of it has always been “it’s nothing like the book, it doesn’t even have the powered armour, at least Edge of Tomorrow got that powered armor right”, but now I have a reference piece to point to that really nails it.

    Definitely worth a read.
