Given the West’s nearly exclusive focus on the trans-Atlantic slave trade these days, slavery in the muslim world, which predated the Western experience by hundreds of years, doesn’t get much attention. But that was the reality for every society until the development of the division of labor and industrial capitalism.
“This Trans-Saharan Slave Trade is easily overlooked thanks to its more famous Atlantic cousin, but the exchange of unfree people across the desert was a longer lasting and possibly larger system that deserves much ore attention.”
Another inconvenient truth was that the slave trade could not have existed without the cooperation of African kingdoms which viewed peripheral tribes as fair game.

“…slavery in the muslim world, which predated the Western experience by hundreds of years,…”
Islam is what, 1300 or so years old?
People were selling slaves all over the place long before then, including in “the west.”
It is my opinion that the real driver behind abolition in the west was not a moral awakening, but rather that steam power and industrialization made it no longer necessary.
Good point, YeahWell.
As for slavery, let’s get real historical.
Like taxes, prostitution, and death, slavery is part and parcel of the way of the world.
A wee case in point is that very much slave action predates the muslim shite of 1400 years ago…
Epictetus, a proto Stoic, was born into slavery in AD 50.
The examples could go on for Greeks and many others.
I am a Greek awaiting reparations. Until then, I will break plates and scream “OPA!”
642K Union casualties including 335K deaths kinda point to a moral awakening imo. The North detested slavery and wanted it abolished. The South wanted to keep slaves even if it meant creating a separate nation. War became the negotiation and morals did indeed play a towering role. They didn’t call him Honest Abe for nothing.
but honest Abe was a Republican and the south were Democrats , a current oversite in history
… and it was Eisenhower, another eeeeeeeeevil republicans that sent the 101st Airborne to get those black kids into college in Little Rock, Arkansa. Quizz, which famous political couple hails from Little Rock?
“The North detested slavery and wanted it abolished. The South wanted to keep slaves even if it meant creating a separate nation.”
It’s not nearly that simple. Blaming the Civil War on slavery and *only* slavery is revisionist history, written by the victors:
The war between the United States and the Confederate States began on April 12, 1861 at Fort Sumter, Charleston, South Carolina. The immediate cause was Constitutional principle: the U.S. government refused to recognize the southern states’ right to secede from the Union, and the C.S. government asserted that right by seizing federal property within its states’ borders. President Abraham Lincoln’s April 15 call for volunteers to suppress the “insurrection” confirmed white southerners’ fears of Federal “coercion,” and prompted four Upper South states to join the Confederacy and, thus, widen the war.
Only about 1.6% of Southerners owned slaves. Even by changing the way that ‘slaveholders’ were measured, the most earnest efforts of the left to inflate that number only resulted in an increase to 5%.
Here’s another stat: only 4-6% of captured African slaves (captured by their fellow Africans to be sold as slaves, don’t forget) came to America…the vast majority went to Brazil and the Caribbean.
The North was industrialized, the South wasn’t.
I should also add that the North didn’t abolish slavery until they won, and that in fact, slavery was used as an after-the fact pretext to have the moral high ground.
My assertion stands.
That is true.
Slavery was not mentioned until later in the war. It was about states rights.
You’re Honest Abe was a butcher. Over 600,000 lives were lost during that war that was not started over slavery. Remember both north and south and other blacks had slaves.
Islam has been and is still enslaving those who refuse its filthy philosophy. It’s hard-coded into the basic tenets and muslim filth make no bones about it.
What you mean like Barry Soeroto’s ,AKA Barack the Magnificent’s, Daddies family did?
Always though it was the height of hypocrisy for that descendent of Arab Slave Traders to be the “Icon ” of the Demon Rats.
Of course ,if it was not for double standards, our progressive comrades would have no standards at all.
And the biggest achievement of Hillary’s tenure as Sectary of State, was bringing back the slave trade to Libya.
Another Democrat Success.
Over a thousands years million of Europeans were enslaved by North Africans. America’s first post-independence war was against the Barbary States to free enslaved sailors and stop the practice. Why do we never hear of this?
From the halls of Montezuma to the shore of Tripoli , mentions it .
Yup. This actually made me buy a couple of books to find out what the shores of Tripoli were all about. Just reading about Decatur was enlightening.
Good question – though the BBC (of all organizations) has some good information on this.
“By extension, for the 250 years between 1530 and 1780, the figure could easily have been as high as 1,250,000.”

Because it’s not important that a Marine Lieutenant O’Bannon and 8 Marines, plus about 500 mercenaries overthrew one of the Barbary states?
One found slave markets in Tripoli after the fall of Qaddafi… thanks Hillary
Although the concept and practice predates it, what is the origin of the word slave?
Slav. from the Slavic regions. A massive conquered people who were referred originally by their places of origin, but later came to signify anyone placed into bondage.
And who enslaved them?
I think it’s from the Greek word sklavos. It’s too close to the English word to be a coincidence. The German word is Sklave which is obviously derived from the Greek.
“Two hundred years after Parliament passed the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act, over 27 million people worldwide languish in slavery, forced to work, under threat of violence, for no pay. In Africa, hundreds of thousands are considered chattel, while on the Indian subcontinent millions languish in generational debt bondage. Across the globe, women and children, sold for sex and labour, are already the second most lucrative commodity for organised crime.”
“A crime so monstrous” by E Benjamin Skinner
also covered is the act of castration, the how to, and the “whereabouts” …
It was “taking everything off, penis, and testicles, at the “base” and then jam a reed into them so they had a method of getting the urine out. About a 10% survival rate due to infections, and the author here is not so kind to the muslims as the British fellow narrating the above video. Do all the British fellate the islamists? or only those who work for the BBC?
Almost all of us are the beneficiaries of slavery to some extent. Many of our household goods and electronics contain an element of “coerced labor” and or “child labor”. Modern hypocrisy is stunning.
How about placing the next two generations of white canuckistani in debt and tax slavery to pay for the foolishness of today? Slavery is not new and doesn’t go away any time soon.
