EV Pricing Could Go The Way Of Gasoline Pricing: According to Automotive News, combined net losses for three of the biggest charging companies (ChargePoint, EVgo, and Blink) exceeded $600 million last year. Something’s gotta give – and it’s likely to be reflected in the cost of public charging.

If they do not perform as well as good old I C E vehicles they are useless.
Of course prices will rise, particularly once the government forces us to own these vehicles. The same thing occurs with home energy. Many innovations reduced electricity consumption (i.e. LED bulbs, efficient appliances) so they upped the price of electricity to make up for the lost revenues and then added the carbon tax.
Sporty
THAT my friend, is exactly what happened.
ONTARIO: In ~2010 or so, just as I was preparing to skedadle the Hell out of that shithole, they introduced Variable Pricing (after they swapped out EVERY mechanical Meter in the province with Digital ones).
So from 11:00 PM to 7AM. Std. Pricing
From 7:00 AM to 9:30 AM Premium Pricing ~25-30% higher
9-30 AM to 3:00 PM Mid day Pricing. ~ 10% over Std.
3:00 PM to 11:PM Premium Pricing.
This was supposedly to “CONSERVE” Energy. The big advert was to push folks to buy Appliances that were digital and could be set to Start/Stop at whatever time you desired. And as such one was Urged/Coerced to do Laundry/Dishes at 3:15 AM.
All part n Parcel of GM Butts Climate SCAM, he, being McGuinty’s Climate TZAR. We left in Oct 2010…after 3 yrs living in Barrie…RIGHT Bk to Alberta. It seemed to me that Compared to Alberta – EVERYTHING there was 25-50% more expensive…..EVERYTHING.
.
Leaving was A Decision I’ve NEVER Regretted.
Plus you can actually be proud to say you’re from Alberta.
Don’t forget tax increases. Governments will have to replace the tax income from gasoline taxes.
California did this with gasoline taxes, there was a big push for everyone to drive more fuel efficient vehicles and they urged to public to buy them, so, many did just that. Then they had to increase the fuel taxes to recoup for the lost revenue!
Oh man.. ?
Make it fun, affordable and convenient.. The difference between a trend and a true and lasting upgrade.. I have no love for oil and gas .. It’s just the best tool for the job..
Me, I live close to work and drive a small sporty econo hatchback commuter.. I could gas it up once a month but I never fill it all the way up.. Call it three weeks.. Five minutes every three weeks..
Or I can get a Tamagotchi Smartwatch Digital Pet /EV and feed the damn thing every day .. Oh the joy of being cool until I get bored and throw it in the kitchen drawer..
How about not enough or inconvenient parking ?.. Thats me as well.. 3 adults, 3 cars and two spots.. I suppose we could clean out the single car garage and play musical chairs all night long .. Oh boy, my wife wins and her two boys can screw off to a charging station.. That’s how that goes in my house..
Then get on the bus John.. That’s 45 minutes both ways.. 1.5 hours a day and 7.5 hours a week.. You have just turned a 5 day work week into a 6 day work week.. When I drive I get a hour back a day to do fun things like clean up and start dinner..
I had the choice of a 26 minute commute using my own vehicle, or taking transit for 2+ hours each way
Hey you pompous, self righteous, EV owners that told me you were going to always have cheap charging, eat a bag of dipsticks, your freeloading days are over.
Plus, a road tax for EVs is also imminent. And higher insurance costs…
Look for home charging stations to require their own separate meters. This will ensure extra taxes – allegedly for road maintenance but going into general revenue – are collected. Anyone with one meter will pay the extra taxes on home power until the second one is installed.
I’d expect the government to just put a “car charging tax” on all electricity, and then force everyone to file a report each year on either the amount of travel they use, or apply for an exception with amply proof that you don’t have an EV…
And if you don’t file, then you pay the full tax.
Same way the city of toronto requires every owner in the city to apply for an exemption to the “empty home tax” each year.
Anyone thinking EV’s were gonna be Cheaper…had granite in their craniums. This was ALWAYS going to be the result. Higher Electricity costs, Higher Insurance Premiums (well yea, when a Battery requiring replacement due to supposed damage runs a guy 60k..?)…and Road taxes coming for them as well.
So with all that, plus the fact that they still are only capable of ~175km or less @ -35C (Heater on full pin)…Line-ups at Charging stns, Zero Value for used, can’t recycle & can’t tow & battery replacement cost pure INSANITY.
What FLIPPIN GOOD Are they..??
IMO, There is NO GOOD reason to own one.
There NEVER was…at least up here in CANUCKISTAN
Let’s look at another overlooked point of EV’s- the charging station. With a typical gasoline station, each pump can turn over a customer in about 5 minutes, so one pump is good for 12 customers per hour buying lets say an average of 50 litres each. Now look at an EV station, charging one customer per hour per charger (I don’t even remember how long the fast chargers take, to be honest). And that charger and customer take the same amount of real estate as the pump and it’s cars. And real estate is expensive. So where’s the ROI going to come from, other than from subsidies?
Shocking news that electricity to charge isn’t free forever! Never heard of people getting snared in a trap and then skinned before!
Zero emissions, run it off renewables, recycle every part of it , and we will save the world!
Every step in this has been fraudulent, and what really burns is the perpetrators of all this walk away with no responsibility for any of it. I hope people will wake up and call their b.s. for what it is!
Most Canadians are living in apartments and condos or will be in the future. Home ownership is rapidly becoming a thing of the past. No young families can afford a home.
No home = no garage = no safe place to park and charge.
Stacked up in high rises results in long wait times and soon to be unaffordable charging rates as electric power become less and less reliable and more and more expensive, you will have no choice. EVs = anxiety.
And does anyone think the governments are going to forgo the extorted cash flow from gasoline? There will be way to get it from the fools who bought an EV thinking they are getting tax free energy …. hahaha .. wait and see.
A garage isn’t always a safe place to park and charge. Don’t forget the spontaneous combustion factor.
I’m sure I have nothing to fear from spontaneous…KABLOOIE!
