Socialist Boomerangs

It’s a basic fact of economics that it’s not the entrepreneur who determines wages, but the marginal consumer. Gig workers in Seattle are discovering that truth the hard way.

The Pay Up Legislation, as the city regards it, was meant to improve wages for gig workers by entitling them to “minimum pay,” or in other words, pay based on the time worked and miles traveled for each offer.

“Sundays before the ordinance,” Lardizabal. “You know, we’d be thinking breakfast. Today, I didn’t even touch it. They’re not going to order. It is definitely backfiring.”

“Assuming that you are working constantly, then yes, you’re going to be making that much money. But that’s not what’s happening right now. Because people are not ordering as much anymore. The tips are going down because they think we’re making all this money.”

    1. Piker! Raise the minimum wage to $10 billion an hour!
You have a good point, but you’re not “radical” enough.

    2. Rush Limbaugh used to say that to point out the stupidity of minimum wages. I always like to point out that the minimum is always the bottom, and all prices rise to cover the minimum. In other words, no net gain.

    3. Make food delivery mandatory say three times a week for everyone. That way the poor downtrodden will make a living wage.
Sorry I accidently watched a video on CBC. It will take me a while to deprogram.

  1. pollllitiSHUNS (my original spelling by the way). famous for ‘solving’ one problem by CREATING thousands more. example 257. (l exaggerate. lm entitled. l chose to be a leftoid for the.73 seconds it took to hit the 2,5 & 7 key) ha ha ha !!!!

  2. Heh.Soon they will recognize the simple truth.
The real minimum wage is zero.
When you provide neither benefit nor service to society, they tend to reward you in kind.
But what a cunning way to crush the mini wage earners..
    Californication.

  3. Wasn’t this the predicted result when the idea was first floated? Predicted by people who understand basic economics, not by the Marxist idiots* who brought it about.

    * I know “Marxist idiot” is redundant, but I wanted to emphasize the type of idiocy at work.

  4. I’m sick of this shite.
When I was a punk back in the early 70s, fresh from dropping out of high school, I went on to doing a wide range of jobs, from construction to short order cooking to roofing and many more “gigs.”
What I had to offer was a work ethic and willingness to learn, show up, do it, get paid. and pay my rent while respecting the places I lived in. Hell, I would clean up the common yard in the walk up, etc.
All of which served me well as I learned and progressed.
And now I enjoy retirement, pensioned and grateful and respectful of working for it, and to those who saw that and paid me for services rendered.
So, why not try that, ye latter day gig workers? Mayhaps too late? Another era, I guess…

  5. Those who make the rules have zero common sense. They couldn’t run a lemonade stand for more than 2 days with going bankrupt. They really are amongst the stupidest people on the planet!
