      France never recovered spiritually from the loss of 1.3 million men who died in the WWI meat grinder. 1940 and Vichy proved it, and little has changed.

      I knew a man who had been in the Wermacht in France in 1944. He remembered seeing Union Jacks appearing in windows as they were pushed out of a village because of a strong Allied attack. Two days later, substantially reinforced, the Germans counterattacked and retook the village. Out came the swastikas.
