  1. Imagine the ruckus if they were posting a teaching position only open to a white person. Or even worse, a straight white man.

    1. I agree. Its blatant racism. But one other point. It’s a totally inaccurate way of determining eligibility. If you were going down this road you should at least remove the issue of self identification. We already know that this invites illegitimate claims of color. No other qualification is accepted on that basis. And then you move on to what exactly does qualify someone to claim they are a black person. Is it skin color, sort of a “fifty shades of black.” At what point then are you black enough? I don’t think so. Is it some ancestor several generations back that qualifies someone to “self identify” as black? How far back can you go to claim blackness. Who knows? It’s utterly ridiculous. And it came from what is supposedly an institution of higher learning. Its incoherent nonsense. Shameful.

      1. It’s cute how they say market demand will determine the final salary offer. Clearly there is no market demand or they wouldn’t have to restrict applications to blacks only.

      2. Didn’t we all come out of Africa? If yes, a light coloured progeny would qualify as well. What determines “you ain’t black”?

        1. A less discriminatory way of selecting a candidate would have to require someone with qualifications in African or black music. But then academics are so much more intelligent than the rest of us

  2. In yer face RACISM.

But then hey, it’s on the Island (YVR Island). No surprise whatsoever.. An Island that should be obliterated with a Tsunami.

  3. And if you are from another racial group but simply self-identify as black, are they going to set up a Race Classification Board to make sure you are not lying?

    1. And how much black blood do you need in you to qualify? Just one drop?

Or maybe just self identify. Is Rachel Dolezel still looking for work?

  4. They might get a more targeted pool of applicants if they just tweeted “yo! need a black ass. pro.!!!”

  5. White people can be accused of racism whereas colored folk really are racist. Sadly that is a lesson that future generations get to learn and relearn over and over again.

  6. This is an outrage. They are advertising for a colonizer on Songhees traditional territory when they should limit their candidates to Songhees musicians with indigenous knowledge limited to traditional stick on log or sealskin drum beating studies – leading to tenure and reconciliation.

    1. Best comment of the day so far, John. I was going to post along the lines of Canada’s illustrious blackface history, that if Gene Krupa, Pete Best, or Ringo Starr appeared in blackface who would best qualify for the position.

On the other side of the coin if the salary range is any indication of potential and accomplishment is it any wonder that the graduating classes over the last ten or fifteen years are so uneducated that they borrow upwards of $200,000.00 to land a barrista job at Starbucks. I thought women’s studies was overrated.

  7. This reminds me for some reason of National Lampoon’s High School Yearbook. All that’s needed is for the candidate to be a credit to their homeroom.

  8. Paging Rachel Dolezal… Presumably you don’t need to actually be black as long as you self-identify as such!

  9. Illegal discrimination and vile racism.. For all the wrong reasons.. They need to be SUED into bankruptcy..

  10. I find this disturbingly racist. UVIC is declaring that Blacks are so incompetent and unmusical that they have to have special provisions. NO! I refuse to accept their racist views.
About fifty years ago there was this fella who said something like he wanted his kids to grow up in a world that looked at the content of their character and not the colour of their skin.
How did we go from ‘I have a dream’ to ‘I have a delusion’?
