Part 1 – Where Chiefio looks at the properties of the modest papaya plant –

“Hmmm… this could go under garden plants too, I suppose… but this thread on DIY medicine seems better. Papaya are an interesting fruit. Green, it can be cooked as a vegetable or shredded and treated like spaghetti. Young leaves can be eaten as a Pot Herb, cooked. Ripe, or course, it is a sweet fruit. The seeds can be ground up and used a bit like pepper.

Then there’s this: It claims that papaya seeds can kill off / cure a common parasite that causes people to (and mice…) to take excessive risks. Toxoplasmosis

Upcoming headlines in “Not the Bee” and NYT, CNN, ABC, Guardian and other YSM –

“CDC, NIH, FDA, Big Pharma, TGA, State Government Health Departments, AMA announce ban on consuming papaya products!

    1. Well, we wouldn’t want any potential offenders to feel threatened by more-prepared frontline staff.

  2. “Interesting review paper about vegan diets.

The results don’t surprise me as any strict vegan I have ever encountered has always seemed unhealthy but I was unaware of the mental health impacts of such a diet.

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10027313/

The Impact of a Vegan Diet on Many Aspects of Health: The Overlooked Side of Veganism

The most recent systematic review [33], which included eighteen studies, compared meat abstainers versus meat eaters in terms of mental health. The research included 160,257 individuals (85,843 females and 73,232 men) from various geographic areas, including 149,559 meat eaters and 8584 meat abstainers (aged 11 to 96 years). Eleven of the 18 studies found that meat-free diets were linked with worse psychological health, four were inconclusive, and three found that meat-free diets resulted in improved results. The most thorough research found that meat-avoiders (i.e., “full vegetarians”) had a 7.4%, 24.1 %, and 35.2% 1-month, 12-month, and lifetime prevalence of unipolar depressive disorders, respectively. In contrast, meat consumers had a much lower prevalence: 6.3%, 11.9%, and 19.1%. Similarly, the 1-month, 12-month, and lifetime prevalence of anxiety disorders for meat abstainers were much higher at 20.4%, 31.5%, 31.5%, and 10.7%, 17.0%, and 18.4% in the meat eaters respectively. The study highlights the high incidence of mental health problems among vegans, emphasizing the vital need of increasing awareness of these illnesses to facilitate early intervention. Women notably appeared to be adversely impacted by mental disorders such as stress [34-36].”

A good question in comments is “which came first – chicken or egg?”

  3. This comes as a pleasant surprise. The Globe & Mail has published an editorial in which it repeats Pierre Poilievre’s demand that the prime minister “put up or shut up” on his allegation that India was responsible for the murder of Hardeep Nijjar in B.C.:

“Yet Mr. Trudeau has not spelled out to the nation exactly what has been uncovered that compelled the government to take those steps, and to ignite a serious – perhaps enduring – diplomatic crisis with India. The Prime Minister needs to lay out his case, immediately, to bolster support for the government’s actions both at home and abroad.”

    1. “Has the Ukraine collapse begun?”

Impossible! We have expert military strategists frequenting SDA who have clearly stated that Ukraine has defeated Russia as far back as Nov 2022. “It’s over for Russia”, “Russia has lost”, “Russia has been reduced to fighting with shovels”.

Guess that’s all we need to know, other than “send more money” of course.

But the great Counter Offensive has liberated two entire villages so far! WooHoo!! Victory is near!!

In reality they are just about out of time before the weather changes.

        1. “But the great Counter Offensive has liberated two entire villages”

Guess that means that the people of Lahaina Hawaii should quit snivelling, as their tax dollars were not entirely wasted on tens of thousands of dead foreigners who’s names they couldn’t pronounce.

      1. “He’s commenting on the recent grain issues.”

And also ceasing to provide financial/military support to Ukraine, as are other nations.

        1. Poland has provided more than their fair share. He’s connecting future arms supplies to the grain spat. There’s also an upcoming election.

Poland will continue to be a major transportation and repair partner for Ukraine.

          1. “He’s connecting future arms supplies to the grain spat. ”

No. He just has an exceptionally bad sense of timing (as do a bunch others on both sides of this issue). The whole grain deal requires a much longer post, but the amoebas live on soundbites so I will skip it for now. Sufficient to say the whole attempt by a few Ukrainian oligarchs with connections mainly to Germany (five companies literarily) to flood Eastern European markets with Ukrainian grain is going nowhere. This is not just Poland, but also Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia and temporarily (with an option to extend) Romania. There will be others. This will all blow over and Ukraine will have to back down when Romanian and Bulgarian farmers protests start … very soon now by the look of things. Tempest in a teapot anyway.

            “There’s also an upcoming election.”

You’re right and EU leadership is doing their best to derail the ruling PiS party. Hence lifting of the embargo. Looks like it backfires but too early to tell.

Coincidently, and this needs repeating: the transit of Ukrainian grain is still going on, just not the sale on domestic Polish market.

        2. “And also ceasing to provide financial/military support to Ukraine, as are other nations.”

As usual you’re talking about things you do not understand. Poland’s contribution has been very extensive and they already have given all they could have. There is plenty more weapons going to Ukraine just not from Poland (other than the already contracted for through western funding). Poland has been at the forefront of military support from the start. Unlike a lot of Western allies they have been withdrawing equipment from line units, not from storage, this ends for the time being until replacements are delivered. In no way this implies that Poland is cutting Ukraine off as a logistical/transit hub. Also Ukrainian equipment continues being repaired in Poland.

    2. LOL no, you’re just wishing so strongly for it that you are having problems distinguishing between reality and visions. Putting down that bottle of potato vodka should help. You still have lost already, failed to achieve any objectives, unified your best trading partners against you, became a vassal of Chicoms, turned Baltic into a NATO lake and there ain’t nothing that will change it. The sooner you morons realize that you have bitten a lot more than you can chew the sooner you can go back to beating your wives, breaking world’s records in abortions and drinking yourselves to death.

  4. Contrary to the wishes of the elites and their central planners, Canadians in large numbers continue to stay away from public transit.

“In July, the number of urban transit passenger trips in Canada reached 110.8 million, recovering just over three-quarters (75.2%) of the July 2019 ridership, before the COVID-19 pandemic.”

And this is happening while the population has been growing at record levels, increasing by 2.5 million over the last four years.

  5. Cool vid on Fat City/Starland Vocal Band with history I did not know. Loved those albums as a late teen in Washington DC. Danoff was, and remains a brilliant songwriter. Face it: They failed because they weren’t POP, Disco, or Country (or POP Country). The Folk community is still in love with them, along with the likes of Steve Goodman, John Prine, Willis Allen Ramsey, Steve Earle, and more than I can remember. Canadians had their folk stars like Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Young, yet also made lesser-known greats like The Duhks, and like the US folkies, a niche success.
Take Me Home Country Roads is considered West Virginia’s “National Anthem”

  6. The One Million March was yesterday here in Saint John. Despicably, the city sided openly with the groomers in a public message on their Facebook page. Today, I discover the students themselves are staging a walkout at the high school next to my home, Harbourview High. The fight continues. They had a bullhorn and had made signs. “How come there’s a pride flag in ever classroom? Why not a Canadian flag?” “Why a rainbow memorial poppy?” “Stop ALL THE BULLYING.” Quite a crowd on the sidewalk.

    The kids are alright.
