‘Biggest clean energy disaster in years’

No new offshore windfarms will go ahead in the UK after the latest government auction, in what critics have called the biggest clean energy policy failure in almost a decade.

None of the companies hoping to build big offshore windfarms in UK waters took part in the government’s annual auction, which awards contracts to generate renewable electricity for 15 years at a set price.

The companies had warned ministers repeatedly that the auction price was set too low for offshore windfarms to take part after costs in the sector soared by about 40% because of inflation across their supply chains.

  1. Ha Ha …. the cost is so low they can’t make money.
The lies of the green machine are simply unbelievable.

  2. It’s not a win, they are about to unleash hell with onshore wind farms in the UK. This will be part of the excuse, as offshore is just “too expensive.”

  3. Don’t be silly. Biden JUST told me that inflation was at 3.4% and that he’d rescued our economy. Surely our Western ally, the UK must have similarly low-low inflation rates?

  4. A couple of days ago I posted the BBC version of this story in Reader Tips. It has quite a different spin.

    “A Mirage in the Wind

In the ever-evolving landscape of so-called renewable energy, offshore wind power has been lauded as a promising solution. Yet, recent revelations from the UK government’s auction process seem to further validate the skepticism surrounding these projects”

Juxtapose to the Guardian version which calls it a clean energy disaster and seems to imply the government didn’t do enough.

    1. “That would have saved consumers £2bn a year compared with the cost of using electricity generated in a gas power plant, according to the industry group Renewable UK.”

That’s an absolute lie and we all know it. The Guardian is no place for facts.

      1. That saving might be true if the projects met their floor price of 44 Pounds per megawatt/hour, but the current prices are well above that at 78 Pounds per megawatt/hour (though still off their peak of 568 pounds in september of last year)

That doesn’t even take into account the Billions required to build these generators which seem to have a break even price in the hundreds of pounds per megawatt hour in the 15 years of their existence

        1. Yup!
I tell the Climate Crusaders this:
Every inconsistent electrical generator has to be backed-up by a consistent electrical generator.
The true price of wind is whatever it costs + its back-up cost.
Then they mumble something about batteries.
          They’re pathologically ignorant.

  5. When free money isn’t enough anymore, you are into the liability stage of the game.. Left holding the bag on cleanup and maintenance.. Left holding the bag for failure.. Off shore money sinks are fine in the beginning but as your fleet grows the “free money” dries up on the first builds.. A unprofitable liability that still has 10 years left on the contract..

Much the same as burning out your commuter car before its payed off.. Folding old debt into new until your driving a 50 grand shit box..
