After Killing Saskatchewan’s Horseracing Industry

A city run by incompetent losers, top to bottom:

Plans to develop a multi-million-dollar soccer stadium and bring an expansion Canadian Premier League franchise to Saskatoon aren’t moving forward, Prairieland Park Corporation, one of the parties involved, announced on Tuesday. […]

In an email to the StarPhoenix, Kemppainen said since they don’t have a definitive date for when this project will be initiated again, “one could say that it is on indefinite hold.”

He said the timing just doesn’t appear to be ideal for “such an ambitious project,” citing interest rates, inflation and construction costs that have increased significantly since the work was started years ago.

“The pandemic interrupted the soccer plans and everybody is aware of the financial strain that has been inflicted on most businesses and governments as a result of this,” Kemppainen said in the email.

He reiterated that current economic conditions are the reason the project has been “adjourned.”

Flashback: “Saskatoon is ready for it. Saskatchewan is ready for it. No longer should we be a fly-over for some stuff. It’s time.”

  1. Expected cost $28 million, using the latest stadium calculator, works out to $134 million

They are building it open air, for a soccer team that doesn’t exist yet, and is only going to use it 15% of the available time.
Exactly how long was the payoff for the initial $28 million?

  2. LOL…5500 seat stadium for soccer, cricket, lacrosse, rugby. Are you out of your effing minds? I’ve seen more people at poker tournaments, where do you think you are…New Delhi?
Follow the money…there’s a whole bunch more to this.

  3. How much does it really cost to lay down some grass, paint some lines and put up some Bleachers?

I just noticed how empty the crowd is in the concept artwork!

  4. L – Saskatoon:”A city run by incompetent losers, top to bottom”

Now that’s a perfect 2024 city election campaign slogan:
banners, bumper stickers, lawn signs, t-shirts, hoodies, mugs,
Tourism Saskatoon sign at the city limits…?

Hmm, would a competent loser, lose more than an incompetent
loser, who it implies is incompetent at losing?
Or are two governance sins required for public office in this city?

Question for city candidates: please explain the difference between
snow clearing and a snow job.

    to be continued…

  5. But, but, we HAVE to spend $500 million to build a stadium that will bring in two more concerts per year!!!!

    1. Maybe get the Guess Who to do an encore of “running back to saskatoon”…or is it “running up the graft cartoon”?
      Whatever.
      And, hey, really?
      Saskatoon!?
I have seen cities, and that sure ain’t a real one.
Whereas, there is Regina, which rhymes.

  6. The newly imported voters don’t care about horse racing so much as soccer, cricket and camel racing.

  7. The city is already way over budget. And they are dead set on replacing the stadium and the library. Downtown libraries are pretty much hang out spots for the homeless and maybe Saskatoon just isn’t big enough for a bigger stadium and all the really big shows. Its good to see at least one project put on indefinite hold because its unaffordable.

  8. Why don’t they put a franchise in Mosaic Stadium — it’s already there! wsj

  9. I would be excited to watch the first soccer match played in a driving blizzard. That would be so Canadian /s
