Though the end of the summer has not yet arrived, I’m making a brief guest appearance to try to shed my “shirker” reputation and try to climb back into Kate’s good graces. Here’s a fun documentary video from the 1955 British Grand Prix. And here are 10 of the funniest moments from Fawlty Towers.

These two links may lead one to believe that I’m in Jolly Olde England. While I will indeed be there in a few weeks, I’m currently finishing up my last few hours in Skopje, Macedonia. This was preceded by 2 days in Belgrade, Serbia and will soon be followed by 6 days in Kranj, Slovenia and the Dolomites region of Northern Italy. While I’m not so sure I would actually enjoy living here in Europe, I absolutely do love visiting. Unlike North America, where there’s a general consistency of language & services across the continent, over here one can often drive a few hundred kilometres in any direction and be immersed in a completely different culture & language. It’s absolutely fascinating! And, dare I add, that there’s a certain bliss about being around people where you don’t speak the language; it’s all white noise to my ears. OMG was that racist?!? Finally, amongst the many conversations I’ve had in Eastern Europe, people seem concerned with REAL issues. They’re generally familiar with the Woke Insanity overtaking the West but don’t seem to buy into any of it.

  4. A shirker is someone who is missed by others so much they try and shame him into making an appearance.

    1. Sixto Rodriguez, an American singer-songwriter also died yesterday.

      Unbeknownst to him for decades, his music was extremely successful and influential in South Africa, where he is believed to have sold more records than Elvis Presley, as well as other countries in southern Africa.

      He was the subject of a 2012 Academy Award-winning documentary film “Searching for Sugar Man” and helped give Rodriguez a measure of fame in his home country.

      1. A common misconception is that the human body is composed mostly of carbon. It is in fact composed mainly of oxygen. We are oxygen-based life forms. 65% of our body is oxygen, by weight, due to the presence of water. Of course that water can look pretty ugly. Carbon is ~18%, hydrogen is ~10%.

      1. Which leads me to a long-ago story involving Brian Mulroney versus FRANK magazine. Mulroney had showcased daughter Caroline, then 16 years old, at some sort of night out, posing with her in front of cameras. The satiric FRANK then ran a “Deflowering Caroline” pseudo-contest as a front-page satire. So when Mulroney caught wind of it, he yelled something to the effect that “I ought to take a gun down to their office and shoot them!”. Even the pro-Liberal writers at the Star and the Globe and Mail supported Brian Muldoon (FRANK’S name for the crooked PM).

        Year later Muldoon took a $300,000 bribe in cash from Karlheinz Schrieber, in a shoebox, partly to pay for Caroline Multoney’s university education. Today she is Rob Ford’s Minister of Transportation.

I remember listening to the hearings, and Muldoon contested Schrieber’s story about one of the payments and said it was less, I think he said the particular payment may have been only $75,000 (while Schrieber said it was double that) and on the court record Muldoon said he brought it back into Canada, never declared it with border services and put it directly into his safe and not a bank.

          Anything over $10,000 brought over the border MUST be declared and if not could be seized by the government, yet the CBSA never pursued him over the admitted breaking of Canada customs laws.

        2. A bit of a reach on that “bribe” business. Mulroney as a lawyer was approached by a fellow of apparent resources and dubious reputation who insisted on handing him a a substantial amount of cash as a retainer. Mulroney took what must have seemed the prudent course, treated the cash as property held in trust, took out only agreed amounts for expense or services rendered. It was irregular but there was nothing illegal or dishonest about it. I daresay there was a good deal irregular and dishonest about Karlheinz Schreiber, but it happens that legitimate businesses have to deal with creeps and crooks, and this is one of the safer ways to do it. I was never a Mulroney fan but I always thought he was badly misjudged on the Schreiber affair.

          But yes, I do remember the old “Deflower Caroline” scandal. Mulroney was actually claiming that the magazine had actually advocated raping his daughter, a fine example of an overreaction both insane and craftily self-serving. I recall the lads at Frank were mighty happy at getting the attention.

      The Turd’s daughter looks to be around the same age as the girl he’s rumored to have had a relationship with while he was teaching at West Point Grey academy in Vancouver and was settled out of court with a big payout to the girl and signed nda. He left WPG abruptly midterm.

      I wonder if that factored in the separation? Kinda magnifies the Turd’s creep factor.
