About those electric tractors the minister was talking of…

This scythe is probably around 90 years old. Still works. Photo by Brian Zinchuk

A few minutes with a 90 year old scythe reminded me why diesel won’t be so easily replaced with electricity on the farm. This stems from a question federal Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson was asked while at Kipling, Saskatchewan, on June 29. While there he announced a $50 million federal contribution to a wind project tied with a local First Nation. (Is that an “inefficient subsidy” for wind? The morning before, wind in Alberta flatlined, again.)

  1. Heh. Bought a scythe three years ago for shits and giggles and who knows, the way things are going with ICE bans I may actually need it one day.
Yeah, there’s a bit of a learning curve (no pun intended) to using one and along with it a pretty decent workout.
Pro tip: Early morning is best when the dew acts as a lubricant.

  2. No kidding. Wilkinson’s problem is that governments, particularly minsters, are invariably bad at making technology decisions. The Phoenix pay system scandal is an example of just how badly they can get it wrong. Justatwit’s attempt to avoid buying F-35s by buying obsolete Australian F-18s is another.

  3. The ultimate goal is NOT to replace ICEs with electricity. That suggestion is just one of the methods to be utilized in achieving the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is to reduce the population by 95%.

    1. Bingo!
Ridiculous that people take government and media at face value about transitioning appliances, energy and transportation to green-friendly electric. They’re not seeing or being told of the massive infrastructure changes that would be necessarily in place to facilitate such a transition – transmission lines, residential and commercial services, etc. Our governments have no intention of us maintaining our standard of living because otherwise their targets/timelines would be preceded by the doubling/tripling? of our grid which, despite wind and solar expansion, isn’t/hasn’t happened and is likely impossible to happen. Anyone with common sense sees this, but the dimwits in the media and opposition never think to confront the government about it. The amount of suffering that will deliberately inflicted on us is being avoided. Understand what’s happening and prepare accordingly.

  4. BTW, a week or 2 ago councilors in Toronto discussed about replacing all gas lawnmowers etc with electric! 🙂 Super-idiotic, probably would be ok for private small backyards of town homes/semi-detached. But certainly not for parks&roads within GTA.
I guess good ole scythe will be the replacement for the electric lawnmowers which they will go dead after 20m of small to med grass.
How about those gas powered stone cutters like Stihl? 🙂

  5. In “How the World Really Works” one bit that stuck with me is how professor Smil broke down how much human labour goes into making a loaf of bread. Just a simple loaf of bread.

100+ years ago, looking at all the various farm tasks that were done by hand and by farm animal, Smil roughed out the number as 10 minutes, all-in. Plus some larger number of minutes of animal labour, I forget exactly (30-40 or so I think).

Today? Two seconds. Not a typo. 2 seconds. That’s what modern farm machines powered by diesel fuel get us. Put another way that’s a 99.67% reduction in the human labour required to make a loaf of bread.

(typical know-nothing urbanite voice) But it’s just power. Power comes from gas and power comes from a battery so just change the gas to a battery! Then it’s all clean! (end)

I don’t think we’ll make it to the end of the century before we have a real collapse.

  6. Yup.The scythe will be the ultimate “trimming tool”.
Job creation, weight loss plan and “back to the Future all in one.
Of course Bill Blair’s replacement will ban these evil cutting tools, safety first..
    As the must be evil.
Otherwise The Grim reaper would hold another tool…

The “Electric Farm is a priceless joke..Farm Electrification is still fresh in many citizens memories..That single high voltage line stretched out across the plains..
Meanwhile these “Electrification Experts” are imagining 3 phase high Voltage..
Density is not just an engineering problem.

  7. Western first world cities will die if they mess with electric bs in ag rather than letting it evolve naturally. Most people have no idea of watts, amps, horsepower, how few are feeding how many or anything at all of the distribution system. It has flaws, but if you force ideological change on the food industry, millions will die. Ask China.

  8. When we had paper money we could burn it for heat.. You know your in trouble when your? government jumps in bed with the natives..
LOLs on them spending their money on their project.. It simply doesn’t work that way..

Why just fail when you can make it even more expensive?.. I need me a government job..

  9. This reminds me of the story of a man who came upon a family who claimed to have the original axe used by George Washington to chop down the cherry tree. The man immediately purchased same for a goodly sum, after which he was told by the former owners “yes, and it’s only had seven new handles and five new heads since then”.

  10. Anyone care to guess how many people will starve if we continue to follow the insanity of those in government? You do know that ridiculous and insane mandates need not be followed by anyone. There are more of us than police, army, navy, air force and hell, we are armed.
