We Don’t Need No Flaming Sparky Cars

Sask. firefighters want new safety tool for electric vehicle crashes

When responding to calls involving electric vehicles, Warren said firefighters face an unknown and potentially dangerous situation.

Electric vehicles often don’t make noise, so it can be hard to tell if they’re running once they’ve been in a crash. Firefighters also can’t use the tried-and-true trick of putting a hand on the hood to feel a vehicle’s vibrations and determine if it’s still running.

“Those days are gone,” Warren said. […]

“There’s still voltage trickling through the lines until it completely drains down,” Cherpin said, explaining that this makes cutting wires precarious for first responders, especially in situations where they might have to remove someone from a vehicle or cut open the vehicle’s body.

  1. Demand is increasing and more electrically powered vehicles are out on the roads than ever before…
    SMH.

    Who was Jack the Ripper?
    Where’s Amelia Earhart?
And how are people still falling for the EV scam?
Just another one of life’s enduring mysteries I guess. Now if you’ll excuse me…I’m going to watch my ex GTA neighbour cut his 1/2 acre lot on one charge of an electric Ryobi rider.
I’m messin’ with ya…it takes two.

    1. “how are people still falling for the EV scam?” Simple, just like people still fall for Socialism scams, after a century of fails.
One constant “feature” of mankind must be group-stupidity, we shoot ourselves in the foot and we don’t learn a thing.

  2. R.I.P.
Got run over by an electric vehicle trying to move it from a stationary object…before or after getting electrocuted…hmmm.

      1. no, and neither does the plug.

The point of the plug is to make sure it’s not in “gear” and applies the “electric parking brake”

The crash, in theory, should also open the safety relays which should remove power outside the power pack, in the similar way that the inertia Fuel cut off is activated in modern cars.

  3. “Prevents e-vehicles from movement/Universal for all EVs/Bypasses Anti-Theft lock/switches gear to Park or Neutral/may apply the electric parking brake”

    Any chance of unauthorized use?

  4. The owner of the local auto body repair shop won’t work on EVs…
    His view? “They’ll kill you.”

  5. Consumer Reports recently reported that it costs more to insure an EV than a gas-powered vehicle.

“Electric vehicles, however, don’t yet fit neatly into the old framework [insurance for gas-powered cars]. Though there are exceptions, utilitarian and high-end models cost more to insure than equivalent gasoline-powered cars, including hybrids.”

    1. Good! Now remove the subsidies & start charging a road tax to cover those missed in gasoline/diesel. Then let the free market decide.

    2. Yes, because in most cases a crash renders the vehicle a complete write off, since the battery pack is part of the frame, and cannot be inspected after it leaves the manufacturer.

I’m sure the liability insurance is the same, but the comprehensive is excessive

  6. What the hell?
These firemen are protesting the one true virtue of Electric vehicles..
    Mobile Electric chairs.
    800 Volt DC ..
    Just dampen the connection..
Never mind those awesome toxic fumes as the beast burns.
    Save the environment!
