  1. That song was a classic from the sixties. I miss the unique sound of the Hammond Organ coupled with Leslie Speakers (rotating baffles creating a Doppler effect to their speakers in a box with a variable speed) giving the tremolo sound to the organ voice, common in the late sixties. I don’t think that sound has been equally replicated digitally. Like the vacuum tube amps for warm guitar sound. here is a demo https://youtu.be/ZdmTkqN5BmI

    1. Was that how Whiter Shade of Pale was done then, John?

If so, that was one of the better examples of the effect. I did not know about that little bit of inside baseball.

    2. Yes getting stoned watching the horns start spinning. Getting laid in the back of a ’65 Dodge, listening to that song.

    3. Funny, I thought Winwood was a keyboard player only until I saw Blind Faith live. Turned out he was easily as good as Clapton on a Strat. I thought Dave Mason was the lead guitar player in Traffic but it turns out most of that was Winwood too. Talented cat.

    4. Thanks Bobby … for playing another one of your favorite classic 18yo little Stevie Winwood tunes 🙂 Love the Leslie effect … and of course the warm tube sound of the cabinets.

But Leslie’s weren’t JUST for organs. In the hands of a guitar genius … Leslie created HISTORIC sound …

    5. Rotating baffles? Certainly found it confusing myself.

But to redeem my weak joke, I believe that it’s the rotating baffles of a Leslie speaker that makes the curious flapping noise at the beginning of “Black Dog” by Led Zeppelin.

  2. The Economist says that America is getting richer, quicker (than its rich peers).
America’s economic outperformance is a marvel to behold. “But the country could still undercut its own success”. In other words the US is still performing well in spite of Biden.

“American economic declinism is a broad church. Voices on the right claim that big government has stifled the frontier spirit and that soaring debt has condemned future generations to poverty. The left worries that inequality and corporate power have hollowed out the economy. In a rare display of unity, all parts of the ideological spectrum bemoan the death of American manufacturing and the crushing of the middle class.

There is just one snag. On a whole range of measures American dominance remains striking. And relative to its rich-world peers its lead is increasing.”

    1. When government budgets overspend every year, going deep into deficit annually, it’s no surprise that an economy is “running well”. Canada and the US are prime examples of this dysfunctional illusion.
Massive deficit financing in the short term “works”. Sooner or later, those interest payments add up to insolvency. The objective of both far left governments is to recklessly overspend in their terms, kick the can down the road, so that the next governments become THE BAD GUYS, cutting back needless gubmint programs, while the leftists scream.
      Rinse and Repeat.

  3. Yes getting stoned watching the horns start spinning. Getting laid in the back of a ’65 Dodge, listening to that song.

  4. I’ve heard there were two versions, in North America we got the good one with some crowd noises added, increasing the intensity. It’s always on the play list.

  5. Tim Reid, the Regina SK Tourism CEO, is in a bit of trouble over his group’s Experience Regina ad campaign, when it makes fun of the city’s suggestive-sounding name:
    https://www.sasktoday.ca/provincial-news/ceo-reid-apologizes-over-experience-regina-campaign-6728161

Turns out the campaign ruffled the feathers of a few old-fart nannies and left-wing feminists (is there any difference?). Reminds me of an old joke about a psychiatrist (psy) and his patient (pa) undertaking a word association test:

    Psy: table
    Pa: sex

    Psy: window
    Pa: sex

    Psy: coffee pot
    Pa: sex

    Psy: vagina
    Pa: Saskatchewan
    (OK, kinda funny, sort of).

    1. Years ago Letterman had a guest by the name of Dick Assman from Regina on his show. Dave made hay not only of his name, but that he was from Vagina, no, Regina, SK.

    1. David, great article. It should be posted in SDA if it hasn’t been already. I was surprised to get to the end and see that it was written by Jonathan Kay.

Lawyer Smith comparing Trans women raping biological women in women’s washrooms to white women worried about getting syphilis from black women in washrooms is comparing something that is happening to something that never happened. They are dismissing the fears of biological women. What happened to their safe space? The question becomes, how can women tell if the Trans person is sincere or a horny man taking advantage of the situation.

Nick should have asked Smith if being Trans is a physical or mental condition.

    1. ” super important ” FOAD. Same with the ” literally ” and ” seriously ” people.

    https://tnc.news/2023/04/11/levy-tdsb-how-to-protest-101/

… Now trustees Alexis Dawson and Debbie King – both of them community organizers and anti-oppression black activists – want all Grade 12 students on the board to study a course called Deconstructing Anti-Black Racism.

A motion to the board’s program and school services committee this week suggests that the course – which was created by the board’s Centre of Excellence for Black Student Achievement – become accredited and part of the Ontario school curriculum…

  10. Man charged in relation to New Year’s Day homicide in Edmonton: police
    https://edmontonjournal.com/news/crime/man-charged-in-relation-to-new-years-day-homicide-in-edmonton-police

Edmonton police also said they issued a Canada-wide warrant for the arrest of 31-year-old Tevahn Orr, who turned himself in to police in Hamilton, Ont., on March 21.

Orr has since been transported to Edmonton, where he was charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault and discharging a firearm with intent, Edmonton police said.

Hamilton police were also seeking Orr on several charges including assault, assault with a weapon and four counts of breach of recognizance.

    1. Tevahn , I guess a long distant relation of Hockey Legend
Bobby Orr’s family tree , perhaps the proverbial ‘ Black ‘ Sheep of the Clan ?
