Medicinal Marxism

As Terence Corcoran notes, with a recent decision the Supreme Court of Canada has effectively barred any legal challenges to single payer healthcare.

The Supreme Court effectively approved the lower court’s conclusion that restrictions on private-health delivery do not contravene the Canadian Charter of Rights.

To make matters worse, the court’s justification openly parrots a famous slogan of Karl Marx:

If everyone had to choose a distributional principle, but did not know if they would turn out to be able to make private provision or not, it is plausible that many or most would opt for a system that protects distribution according to need, rather than ability to pay.

Mainstream Canadian conservatives, some of whom are privately critical of Medicare, are not going to move the debate in the right direction by silently awaiting a favorable court decision. That ship has sailed.

  1. So the Stalinist Communist government of British Columbia refuses to treat sick people. They then deny a citizen the right to seek alternate treatment so it’s eff off and die. That’s why Seattle is so close, a choice not available to the impoverished swine who vote Communist.

    1. In a country full of communists and a communists court would anyone expect anything less? Freedom is the last thing on their tiny minds.

  2. Yes, that ship has sailed and sadly, there’s going to be a lot of doctors slipping the berth to more lucrative seas.

It will only get worse from here.

  3. In Calgary, I recall getting a flyer from Benefis in Great Falls Montana … https://www.benefis.org. which advertised health care without the wait for not too bad of prices. It’s an 8 hours drive, but one could easily wait that long in an Alberta emergency room.

The imbeciles in Ottawa know there are alternatives, just as normal people know there are alternatives to investing in Canada, and then much better than paying the confiscatory taxes. Did anyone on the “Panama List” have to pay? Then why should I?

  4. A few years ago my wife took my sick daughter to a clinic in Phoenix. I believe it was 12 Doctors in the clinic – all were Canadians.

Always wondered, what kind of Government does not allow its citizens to pay for their own health care in their own country, if they so choose?

    1. I was recently chatting with a woman who was wintering in the U.S. this past November. She wasn’t feeling well and was in some pain so she went to a doctor. Within one week she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. ONE WEEK! She came back to Ontario with all her test results and had surgery three weeks later.

  5. You have a right to healthcare because healthcare is a right.
A right that the State can take away from you for all sorts of reasons.
    So it’s not a right.

If I have a right to healthcare why can’t I spend my own money on my own healthcare?
Why is funding for healthcare tied to political initiatives like digital ID?

      1. Ask any liberal, and they will tell you that you have a “right to healthcare”, they will then start mumbling when you ask them who they intend to enslave to ensure that “right to health care”

  6. At least now you are still free to seek heath care delivery outside the Canadian Gulag. Once CBDCs are in place that window will close too as the NDP/LPC politics of envy, resentment, and hatred, further coagulates. The Conservatives will decry it but will never again achieve power so won’t have the opportunity to cave on that too. Who needs a communist party when we have the Spawn-Fuhrer’s father’s mercurial Constitution and the SCOC to use it to rationalize “group rights”-derived statism.

  7. Could I get away with promising to pay my taxes a hundred years from now? What the government is doing is no different. Canadians pay for health care via their taxes, and then they suffer and die because it isn’t provided. That’s a swindle. Conservatives need to point out that the absence of a performance clause in the Canada Health Act has given politicians a license to kill for the sake of ideological purity from which they hypocritically exempt themselves. They are the enemies of publicly funded health care. What other countries engage in such madness? It’s time for the Conservatives to stop being so delicate. The cruel advocates of the status quo need to be verbally beaten to a bloody pulp.

  8. The Supreme Court rules only after calling the PMO to check what they want. Katie Telford is essentially the only judge on the court. The ones who sit there are just well paid Liberal hacks.

  9. Nothing contravenes the Canadian Charter of Rights.
    Because we have none.
The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is a lie.
Nothing protects the individual citizen from Bureaucratic Abuse.
    Nothing.
“Unacceptable Views”..Send in the Uniformed Thugs.

A proven lie,as Dread Covid Theatre has rubbed in the salt.
And the “Supreme Court” has spoken.
Government denying you any of those promised Rights or Freedoms?
That is “Moot” cause they temporarily stopped doing it..
And “Its an emergency”,because the morons are very very frightened..

The biggest Lie,”We are from the government and we are here to help.”
Is the base upon which all the lesser lies, such as Government provided Healthcare,Rule of Law and so on ,rest.
    Know the truth.
    Government is here to help..
    Themselves.
    Canada is a Kleptocracy.
    Inhabited by indoctrinated fools..

We fools keep pretending that the evidence of our eyes,is the lie and that the blatant lies from our Parasitic Overload holds any truth at all.

    And remember..In Can Ahh Duh…
Healthcare services infinitely delayed, postphoned and promised..
    Are not “Services Denied”..

The Courts apparently believe healthcare can health the dead.

  10. We have a friend who has a hip mobility problem that’s been creeping up on her over the last year or so. Just recently became very painful. Went to her chiropractor, nothing he could do. He wrote up a diagnosis, she took it to her GP, the GP ignored the note & told her she needed to see a specialist: 18 months.

She’s well off, so headed down to the Flathead Valley in Montana, got an MRI, cost her a thousand bucks, she came back to her MD with the results. They echoed what her chiropractor’s note had read. She needs a hip replacement. GP says, “Oh, did you pay for this yourself?” No shit, Sherlock.

Think she’s going to wait for an appt in Canada? Not bloody likely.

So, Canadian timeline: 18 months to see a specialist & get an MRI, another year to 18 months for a hip replacement. Maybe.

US timeline: MRI, 4 days and 2 of those were because she couldn’t get down there any faster. Hip replacement? Unknown at this point, but a matter of weeks, worst case.

If you are financially capable of treatment elsewhere, why the hell would you suffer waiting for Canadian health care to pull their heads out of their asses?

    1. Same in Australia. Except we have private available.

Friend needed an operation on his heart. Public was 2 years wait, but he had insurance so it was 2 weeks instead.

IDK what’s going on but the medical industry just seems like a huge scam everywhere.

  11. “Mainstream Canadian Conservatives” are neither brave, nor conservative.

They are in fact, very embarrassing to actual conservatives.

  12. Don’t worry.

On May 11th, the Americans lift all restrictions for Canadians coming into the US.

Cross over the border, do a bit of shopping and get your problem sorted out.

    Just like the old days.

  13. Is there something stopping the use of the not withstanding clause? Each province should have the right to do that so do it.
