  1. I just read about this accident a few months ago. I had vaguely remembered something about the bridge as a kid when I lived in Florida, and distinctly remembered when the new one opened.

  2. I have traveled over both the original and the replacement bridges while traveling to Saint Petersburg and later to Bradenton FL from Tampa on business trips. Beautiful views of Tampa Bay, but I have always disliked ALL bridges. Not quite a phobia, but it triggers my fear of heights that not even jet travel does.

  3. Re: Budget rumoured to give $476 to poor folks to help with inflation. Just remember, the solution to the problems created by government money printing is … yes, you guessed it, more government money printing.

  4. I never thought about it, rd, but I have traversed both the old and new bridges, both ways, too.

I’m not sure how many people can say that. Older people who crossed the old bridge and the new one when it was new have likely passed on. Anyone born after 1980 can’t say they have crossed both, both ways, and anyone born after 1987 couldn’t have used the old bridge at all. Then there is the influx of people to Florida in recent who missed out o the old bridge. But there are still many thousands who can claim that distinction.

I bet there are quite a few others who read here on SDA that can say the same: that they have crossed both bridges both ways.

P.S. to those who know how to operate a rod and reel:

Sections of the old bridge are now a fishing pier. As best I know, it’s the longest fishing-only pier in the world. You drive out to your chosen spot, get out your gear, and start fishing right there. No trekking out on a pier lugging your gear.

I fish it a couple of times each year. While you’re fishing, there’s a great view of the cruise liners and cargo ships as they pass under the new span. It’s also a primo spot to watch the sun set over the gulf if you are there and fishing into the evening.

Oh, if you don’t fish, you can just drive out for the views at a reduced rate.

  5. The Fascinating Horror channel is quite something to watch with some well-made mini-documentaries.

  6. I remember crossing on a family vacation. My dad pointing out a boat in the distance and saying something like ‘All it takes is a little bump.’
