Pay attention to this Newfoundland offshore oil case

Bay du Nord project artist conception. Equinor

Uncertainty about the regulation of downstream emissions was one of the things that ultimately killed the Energy East Pipeline project. This was one of the clearest cases of the federal Liberal government “moving the goalposts.” If legal ecowarriors Ecojustice are successful in this case, it could have profound implications for all oil production in Canada. That’s especially is we are to be “net zero” by any particular date.

Note in the story how the Bay du Nord offshore project was approved by CN-tower climber himself, Steven Guilbeault. The story notes how it was one of the hardest choices in his life. Interesting, how a Newfoundland offshore project could get approval from none other that Guilbeault, and yet the rest of the oil industry feels it has no hope with him. Would that have anything to do with Newfoundland’s consistent election results of nearly every seat going Liberal red for decades? And that this project will be enormously profitably for Newfoundland? Yet when it came to the $20 billion Teck Frontier oilsands project in Alberta, the company walked away because it didn’t feel it could get any regulatory confidence from the feds?

  1. Very simple Provinces need to refuse to obey. And do not even acknowledge the Supreme Court.
Ottawa ignores their rulings the Provinces need to do the same and simply tell them to FO.
    What can they actually do?
Arrest the Premier? Ha Ha Ha.
Send in the army, which is the size of the NYPD. The army could not even control the city of Toronto.
Or maybe Alberta could blockade Eastern Canada. Shut down Line 5 to Ontario and Quebec, then shut down all rail traffic through Alberta and shut down all truck traffic east and west.
No more China trade for the Penal Colony.
Do the same as the Indians only do it better and do it until Canada collapses.
Go UDI that way Ottawa and the SCOC has no legal jurisdiction.

  2. They all blather on about downstream emissions, but none of the eco-hypocrites ever talk about upstream emissions, or total emissions. That is simply because the upstream emissions in ‘renewables’ as a percentage of lifetime outputs are huge. We should demand intellectual honesty in accounting. Total emissions per unit of reliable energy. Then we can compare apples to apples, and anyone with basic math skills will quickly see the folly of baseload renewables. H

    1. Exactly. Same in EVs. It takes 60,000 km for an average EV to breakeven with an ICE vehicle in terms of CO2 emissions due to the higher CO2 footprint baked into the EVs, significantly from the batteries. Depending on how many more kms you can get out of an EV before having to replace its battery, the study I read said that at best (eg. an emission-free grid) an EV can only attain a 20% reduction in CO2. That’s not even close to net zero and requires a massive increase in mining intensity and an increase in grid capacity that no one is thinking or talking about. It makes me think that over the long term, IT AIN’T HAPPENING.

    1. I would love to see Alberta and SK working together all the time for our freedom and liberty.
Canada has become a Penal Colony.
Canada has over 500,000 pages of laws, rules and regulations.
We are not a free people. The 3 levels of government now take more in taxes than we are allowed to keep for the necessities of life.
That is not freedom. That is SERFDOM.

      1. Watcher, until you control your own provincial police forces, you will remain serfs. Why is this so difficult for you westerners to understand? Mao Zedong expressed it quite simply: “Power grows from the barrel of a gun.” And regardless of independence or not, you will remain landlocked. How do you intend to correct any of that?

        1. Well personally I see violence as a very last resort.
People think that the IRA won Independece f the UK through violence. Not really true. It was by constant non compliance with British rule. They drove the Brits crazy with non compliance. The Brits were constantly sending in the troops and getting nowhere. It was bankrupting them. The largest Democracy in the world India won complete Independence with out violence. So we have some good examples.
The guns and violence get the glory but history has many examples of Independence without violence.

        2. “And regardless of independence or not, you will remain landlocked. How do you intend to correct any of that?”

          What needs correcting?

First, there are 44 landlocked countries in the world. And, while many of these are third-world or postage stamp-sized countries with not much for international trade, some are more significant: Austria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland.

Second according to the very UN that these assholes know & love, landlocked countries have access to tidewater (In particular, note 124:2):

You don’t want to grant us a pipeline to the coast? Fine. We just shut down your trade to the ROC, BC. And, we just closed all oil & natural gas pipelines to BC. Have a great day…

        3. “…until you control your own provincial police forces…”

          A process is underway.

  3. That is the case for the new Nation of Buffalo.
    We have the resources.
Resources with a near certain market.
    Resources which we also need.
We have the people, one of the few in Canada still with a work ethic and personal responsibility.
    We have the vision.
We have not shown that we have a back bone, but the need for one has only become glaringly obvious..To most Westerners in the last 10 years.
If you have been paying attention, then Watcher’s take is the screaming obvious..
If you have been grinding away raising kids, paying bills and playing your life games, then that realization is come a creeping.
The harder you work, the less you have..

Alberta/Saskatchewan Provincial Governments could break the Federal Hold, with one simple change..
Relieve employers from paying tax on employees behalf.
Let each employee remit to Ottawa from their gross pay.
    Let Chaos ensue.

For right now, employees are protected and coddled from the Government Rape of their pay check.
Making our “Well Educated” population remit their own, would blow acceptance of this tax theft..
For how many wage earners know the actual cost of employing them?
Or of the fees, upon fees, strangling regulation and naked abuse of the employer,by every government and quasi government Ruling and Regulation Agency.

Have you enjoyed your last interactions with Works Comp?
    UI?
    Revenue Canada?
    Why bother employing?
When you risk criminal charges and a $million fine,if you hire a Darwin Award Winner.?
Only in Can Ahh Duh..idiot parasites making being an employer, wealth creation,a criminal activity..The genius of our bureaucracies.

    Independence .
Followed by a bloody minded reduction of our parasitic overload..An open and honest examination of what destroyed Canada and lead to Can Ahh Duh.
And open carry for all tax paying citizens,so that such an infestation never happens again..Well for 3 or 4 generations anyway.
We had better acquire some Arctic Islands..
So that we will always have a place in our society for the fools and bandits…

    1. 100 % John. If every citizen had to remit their tax to Edmonton and Regina 1st, and every company doing business in Alberta and SK the same. We would hold the whip hand.
Also withdraw from UI, CPP And create Provincial Police Forces, or Provincial Militia’s.
For Citizens health and well being. They could do many tasks now done by the RCMP and legally. The Province would not need special legislation it already exists. Just Deputize them all as Provincial Sheriffs and assign a different scope of work.
This is how the Boers of South Africa hollowed out the British overlords and replaced them step by step.

  4. Brian: “Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson has said by 2050, demand for oil will almost entirely be for non-combustion activities, including solvents, lubricants and petrochemicals.”

Don’t be so sure the ecowarriors won’t attack those as well, no matter how small the footprint:

    1. Thats the beauty of it all Paul Harvey – everything has a carbon footprint. Everything. So the left can simply pick and choose what to delete.

Thats why the media/left/corporations spent the last 2 decades pounding AGW/Climate change into the heads of the sheeple.

  5. And people talk about extortion in Mexico! We do it bigger and better. Spread the green around and the Indians’ environmental concerns will disappear. One would think that the concerns being raised now that the EA has been completed would have been identified during the initial consultation process and been included in the EA.

  6. Time for some Crab Bucket Politics.
Tear everybody else down, mutual poverty for all..
Oh wait, that is Federal Government Policy..my bad, never mind.
Let me guess Eco Justice, the sierra Club of Canada and the imaginary Indian Band, are all listed as Charities or NGOs collecting government graft with the Canadian Government..
Amusingly Sierra Club personnel are so toxic, that even the top Arctic Scavenger, will not eat one..
A few years ago a polar bear dragged a Sierra Club critter out in his sleeping bag..then spat it out and ran off.
Poor bear is probably still gagging.

  7. “Uncertainty about the regulation of downstream emissions was one of the things that ultimately killed the Energy East Pipeline project.”

No. Politicians killed the project. Period. Everything else is obfuscation.
