I, For One, Welcome Our New Self-Driving Overlords

John Robb; (paywalled, but this much should do.)

ChatGPT and a handful of other social AIs are making a big splash. They are unreasonably good at many tasks and are already used to generate real-world work. However, these systems didn’t get this good based on the code written by the people building them. They got this good by using data strip-mined from the Web — social networking posts, images, etc. — and by employing low-paid ‘AI Turks.’ Recently, it was disclosed that ChatGPT is employing workers in Kenya, making $2 an hour, to train the system (currently valued at $29 billion and climbing fast).

Robb is a good follow.

  1. “Valued at $29 billion and climbing fast”

Just waiting for the class action lawsuit for copyright violations…

  2. I don’t know where all of this AI is headed but I’m not getting the warm and fuzzies.
A brave new world comin’ our way, methinks.

And Robb is a good follow. His thread on corporate governance is, well, depressing.
A done deal by the looks of things.

    1. Soon … any idiot can be hired for any position. No particular skills, education, or competency needed. This will be a boon for BIPOC’s who “struggle with the white mans culture”. Everyone else? You’ll be a sucker for investing in your own education. Or caring about your own civilization.

      1. There are jobs that just can’t be learned in the classroom, they need to be taught in the flesh by competent masters.
Maybe when a physical ambidextrous robot of sufficient AI fuzzy logic can teach these skills in the future I may believe the hype, until then, meh.

  3. Well … at least they’re not picking thru rock piles for Cobalt … for far less than $2.00/hr. To propel your “self-driving” Tesla saloon.

    1. Where are Big Reparations on this?

Surely some leftist special-interest group is all over this!

    1. The bias of the programmer and/or the “data” accessed will always reflect in the end result of AI. Period.

We are light years away from sentient computers, despite all the coo-ing about ChatGPT, et al. They are merely regurgitators.
