    We had a family owned burger outlet in our town. I pulled in there one night when I was young and selling ads for a newspaper that published an annual tourist guide, highlighting all the eating establishments in SW Sask. The owner of the burger joint (Bill) asks me, ”When a carload of people pulls in here, how in hell am I supposed to know if they’re tourists or not??”
    An old rancher who had a few too many was sitting nearby. He looks at Bill and says, ”Bill, if they’re eating in this place, they’re tourists!!

    Bad meals are usually the cause of defunct burger joints.

    2. I worked in one in the 1970’s. They served really high quality stuff. I remember the 99 cent Barnbuster hamburger. The chicken was fantastic and i got to bring home the leftovers. They were delicious. I got paid $1.70/ hour, typical for the day.

    3. I remember Lum’s barely and Kenny Rogers’ chain although I never went there. But Poop ‘N’ Taco, yes. I grew up in L.A. A friend got a chili dog there with a piece of brass in it. Probably the safest unexpected addition.

      Why would DS apologize on behalf of the Liar Kenney & the Homely Hinshaw? They need to apologize, not her. She had no hand in it.       As to “considering” dropping prosecutions? Pulease. Quit the GD drama, grab a spine and just do it!

      1. This is a government apology. Glad to see it. Next step– firing Hinshaw as she was poised to do, but seems to have backed off.

      2. Not from Alberta, have family there. Will be in Alberta next week on business.

        What I see here is DS is walking her talk. She can’t make others apologize or do the right thing, but she can state her own position and as a public official try to move things forward. Guaranteed that we’ll never hear an apology from any politician/public servant responsible for the bad treatment, they will never admit error for doing the “public good”.

        DS is getting legal advice on stopping and pardoning charges from the atrocities and this is the right process. Imagine the fallout if she just went ahead with it and found shaky or no legal grounds to act. PR shit show the way the press treats her.

        Moving to bring back the public servants who were dismissed during the atrocities. Lead by example. Doing much better than the Feds, CAF needs experienced people but still dismissing people for not following an illegal order.

        Patience, She is already miles ahead of any other politician in her actions and statements.

        Sure wish we had her kind in Ontario.

          DS can denounce the BS without apologizing on behalf of the a$$holes. By doing so, she sounds just like Blackie McDickFace, apologizing for sh!t that happened decades or more before he was even born. It’s weak sauce and not a trap she should fall into.

          If she is, in fact, getting legal advice on stopping existing charges, then she should keep her trap shut until she receives said advice. The appearance here is that she’s floating an idea & looking for confirmation or denial in the court of public opinion.

          As far as where she’s at, careful. She mouths some wonderful platitudes but she is a quisling & never to be entirely trusted. As one example, a true conservative will be dead against biological males competing in sports against biological females. DS supports said BS.

            Yes. The week before the election she & her crew were traveling around the province stumping and picking up votes that hadn’t been mailed yet. I attended one of the local pickup locations in the Lethbridge area. She gave her talk (entirely underwhelming) and magnanimously offered to answer 3 questions.

            One of the questions came from a gal who was concerned about biological males competing against her daughter(s). DS noted that she has TG friends and had no intention of placing restrictions on biological males competing in women’s sports.

            Her posited (and laughable) solution was for concerned schools to form their own little “pods” to compete in. Of course, the 99.9% must accommodate the 0.1%, instead of the TG teams forming their own “pods”, leagues, etc.

            On these boards a few days back I elaborated on the folly of her proposal when said “pods” leave the relative safety and compete in zones & provincials against the big city teams where this sort of thing is likely to spring. And that’s only at the high school level. What about college & university sports? Or pro?

            She might need some re education like she did on the Ukraine.

      1. There have been a number of people who have claimed that Gang Green’s ultimate goal is to remove John Q Public’s access to privately owned vehicles. I always viewed such statements with a certain level of scepticism.

        That said, I’m a little less sceptical than I used to be. With the shut down of carbon based fuels and the concurrent high pressure move to EV’s, the lack of minerals to build batteries for them all may be the end game. “Whoops! Too much money to restart carbon based fuels & the vehicles that use them. Don’t have enough copper, etc., to make batteries. Sorry, no more privately owned vehicles. Next?”

        What keeps me sceptical is that I don’t know if any of these idiots have the IQ to formulate such a plan & attempt to pull it off. That said, they’ve a lot of willing, brain dead disciples.

  17. So, we’re talking defunct restaurants. Gone but not forgotten types?

    Smoke meat on rye, anyone?

    One of the best and oldest fast food restaurants in Montreal was the World renowned Bens Delicatessen which operated in the downtown district for 98 years. For years, it was so popular that people would form lines outside. Part of the attraction, besides the food, and the original art deco furnishings was their Wall of Fame with posted, autographed photos of the famous people that ate there.

    Below, read about a waiter who worked there for 40 years. I remember that particular waiter when I frequented the place, shown here, as a young man and as a retiree, he enjoyed working for Bens Deli because he admired the Family who owned the restaurant. Kind to their employees and the public in general, these salt of the Earth people never refused anyone a favor, and their generosity was well known in the community.

    Ate there many times myself and was even served by the waiter featured in this piece. Natch, I was sad when the place closed, being a native Montrealer.

    Is Chenoy’s still open on the West Island?  Liked it, too. Then there’s always Schwartz’s on Saint Lawrence Blvd, aka, the Main– Mordecai Richler’s old haunt.

    P.S. as Ben’s Deli is permanently closed, their famous art deco interior was preserved and was moved to The McCord Museum, next to McGill University. An article about Bens was also featured in the now defunct Saturday Evening Post Magazine. Remember that? It showed a lone waiter taking a break near the Wall Of Fame.

      I had the good fortune to eat at Ben’s a coupla times. Schwartz’s as well. I once subjected myself to the now defunct steak house Moishes. The waiters (Jewish) treated you with scorn ha.

      What ever happened to BADR? He move on?

      This morning I flipped on the radio and Dave Frishberg was doing “A Blizzard of Lies” – a metaphor for the world. I remember we had a discussion of Frishberg on SDA a few years back. We did those things back then before the professional spitballers took over.
