October 1, 2022: Reader Tips

Welcome to a new month, the tenth one in 2022! We have an entirely new theme for Reader Tips in October which will hopefully delight you, and possibly make you hungry. Before we get to that though, please enjoy this hilarious segment from The Tonight Show in 1969. There’s an unexpected surprise guest towards the end.

Now onto the main theme for this month . . .

I don’t know about you, but I’ve kind of gotten hooked on videos that are focused on food. So each day this month, Reader Tips will offer a new video with a food theme. Please also be aware that there are a few empty slots so if you have any good ones, please do share them in the comments.

To start things off, here are Dave Portnoy’s Top 10 Highest Ever One Bite Barstool Pizza Review Scores.

Your best tips, on any subject, are much appreciated, as always!

  1. I struggle with food videos–right before bed. Damn I’m hungry, I wonder if my family would notice if I spent the next three or four hours braising easy five ingredient Tuscan pepper beef. https://youtu.be/P5cnh1xIxHo

It is fall, the leaves and t-shirts have turned orange, Tofino surf is getting cold and rough, the coffee filled with unthinkable pumpkin horrors. I like stew or soup as a theme (hence the link above).

BTW the food wishes guy has every recipe known to man, and their variants. Don’t tell your readers that he is from San Francisco, they get weird about that city sometimes.

    1. That looks wonderful … similar to my beef short ribs but with a cheap-ass cut of meat. I gotta try it with about the only beef I can afford now … Chuck Roast

    2. “Food Wishes” John is from New England and trained at the Paul Smiths Culinary School in northern New York State.

    1. Stromboli Pizza: Bridgeland, Calgary..nee Kensington in the 80’s

They make their own dough with specially imported Flour.

      Truly masterpieces of PASTRY..

    2. I expect that there are probably 675,248 pizzas all tied for best pie in the world. But, it’s a fun argument to have.

We were in Toronto in the spring doing some touristy stuff. Came to be lunch time at this aquarium and their lunch counters were closed due to the scamdemic. Only had junk dispensed by machine. One of the machines dispensed pizza, made while you waited and I couldn’t resist. Rural yokel dazzled by the delights of the big city and all that.

Seven minutes and $13 of Justin’s dollars later, we were enjoying the finest Ontario maple cardboard you have ever tasted.

  2. Yay! Food question…I acquired duck eggs today,
(my first), heard that they are terrific in baking,
    Any tips would be appreciated

    1. Yolks will be thicker, as well as the shell. Watch how sanitary the condition the egg was laid. Main reason chickens used to be kept in battery cages was to keep the eggs cleaner

  3. Prosit Y’all.
The weather here turned yesterday, with definite signs that fall is upon us. With the cooler temperatures, and today’s cold rain that inevitably will convert to snow within the month (trans-precipitation, so to speak…LOL), my thoughts turn to warming foods more appropriate to the season that what we’ve enjoyed for the past 4 months. Summer is short in Wyoming, blink and you’ll miss it. Don’t bother removing the snowtires, they might be needed on the high passes in July.

Soups, stews, extemporaneous chile modified on the fly, and crockpot concoctions composed of every known root vegetable make for a wonderful seasonal menu. My all-time favorite, and a massive undertaking, done well: Brunswick Stew. Yes, I’m culturally appropriating the specialties of my Southern Brethren, and I’m sure they welcome the mimicry and know that it is pure flattery, and even tinged with jealousy. It’s not just this amalgam that I envy, but also the working class legumes like field peas – utterly unknown to Northerners; a brown-husked illegal alien to Yankees.
In another month I’ll be stealing from the Germans as well, reaching deep into the liquor cabinet for the mundane burgundy appropriate for Gluhwein. Until then, we’ll tide ourselves over with heavy and flavorful seasonal microbrews.

    1. I know what I’m having for dinner (and probably breakfast tomorrow). That looks delicious. Cheers

      1. It’s just about the finest thing one can take to hunt camp. I’ve spent some incredible Sundays preparing a giant batch of it in November, using a recipe that featured an entire small ham and a whole chicken, while watching the NFL. Some libations required.
In the traditional Alabama format that I learned in the early 80’s, it’s served spread on thin slices of toasted bread and garnished with red pepper flakes.

    1. BTW … the FIRST city to impose a ban on all new natural gas hookups … Berkeley. What a surprise. Now, the whole State has to behave like Berkeley. Hint: Redding has absolutely NOTHING whatsoever to do with Berkeley. This move is pure Fascism. It saves nothing. It helps nothing.

  4. I had purchased an Instant Pot 6 months before the CCP virus began. Having never cooked an Indian dish, somehow that type of cuisine and I became best pals. The IPs versatility, not only for Indian but for countless other types of cooking, is limitless. Huooge reviews on Amazon. Ministry of Curry and Piping Pot Curry are two of my favorites but if one’s curious about the scope and breadth of Indian cuisine, I highly recommend Archana’s Kitchen. She blogs out of India and some of her dished rate 51,000 5 star reviews! Perhaps the IP or Indian cooking could be a theme for a day.
A food joke; my dog will eat absolutely anything I put in front of him but the moment I hide a pill in something he becomes Gordon Ramsay.

  5. The lousiest pizza rip off bullshit scam pizza I ever had was 5-6 years ago in Rome…..or was it Napoli….…cardboard with a wipe of something red on top….about 10 inches in diameter….tried to charge me and the little woman 50 bucks or something….literally 100 feet from that fountain thing…I felt like trying to hit the fountain or stairs or whatever by frisbee ing the abomination…
Every two minutes being importuned by ugly black men to buy watches sunglasses and assorted other products of the good life….one minute later the coppers arrive and chase the perps who melt away lotsa shouting screaming …..joint didn’t lack atmosphere for sure. I think our pizza was called the “Spengler”.
Melons should look into this travesty. Assassino!!

    1. Whenever I meet a gang green preaching climate change prevention, I ask them to what temperature they heat their house.

      They reply 20 to 23C.

I then say, “Do you realize your house is a constant 21C heat source, which is heating the planet? Please reset your thermostat to 10C, or lower, and wear sweaters indoors.”

      Please

      1. Brilliant!

And always always always keep the front door open, as a sign of your willingness to tolerate the diversity that the homeless may bring to your abode.

      2. I’ve decided that it is wasteful and harmful to the environment to have a speedometer on the motorcycle that goes up to 180 MPH but then to only use half of it.
I could by a new speedometer that only goes to 90 MPH but then what would I do with the old one? Throw it away?
        That sounds wasteful.

I’m very passionate about the environment so I feel obligated to use as much as I can of the current speedometer.
Just me, doing my part to save the planet.

      1. Nothing is wrong … and no person is illegal. Logic of the left. You just may die to prove them wrong

      1. But if they allow in lots more immigrants they won’t be able to meet their climate change targets.

    1. Covid is exactly why he should have beaten Justin. Covid allowed Justin to destroy the country. O’Toole let him get away with it.

    2. There’s some merit to the argument. There were a dozen ridings in Ontario in which Justatwit won by a coin-flip, the vote totals were so close. And in most of these ridings, CPC lost votes to the idiotic egotism of Max splitting the conservative vote. Fact of the matter was that Erin had a thoroughly divided CPC. His hold on the leadership was never very strong. This is something which obviously does not apply now. Pierre has as strong a grip on the party as Stephen Harper had a decade ago.

      1. You owe us billions more for your latest payment to soothe your white privilege guilt!

  6. Is there any word from BA Deplorable Rupertslander?
Haven’t seen a post from him since Moby Dick was a minnow.

      1. Yes. I think a lot of people miss him. I do. I think someone may have offended him as it seems odd for him to just disappear. When regular posters just disappear, it destroys the sense of community. I hope he does return.

        1. I have a sense that some people may have been annoyed with the movie stuff. Not me. I just skip material that doesn’t interest me. I too miss BADR. He didn’t seem to be the sulking type.

    1. He disappeared randomly. I hope he is ok, I have enjoyed our film chats. He is an inexhaustible source of information. VOWG is another regular missing.

    1. Meaning what exactly? Is there something positive sbout pitting one group against another? What happened to ” no msinstream” culture? Guess he changed his mind.
