Russia’s Gazprom tells European buyers gas supply halt beyond its control

Russia’s Gazprom has told customers in Europe it cannot guarantee gas supplies because of “extraordinary” circumstances, according to a letter seen by Reuters, upping the ante in an economic tit-for-tat with the West over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Russian state gas monopoly said in a letter dated July 14 that it was retroactively declaring force majeure on supplies from June 14. The news comes as Nord Stream 1, the key pipeline delivering Russian gas to Germany and beyond, is undergoing 10 days of annual maintenance scheduled to conclude on Thursday.

The letter added to fears in Europe that Moscow may not restart the pipeline at the end of the maintenance period in retaliation for sanctions imposed on Russia over the war in Ukraine, heightening an energy crisis that risks tipping the region into recession.

Via Richard Fernandez – “The kindest thing you can say is that the Greens believed their own miscalculation, and in a well meaning way, accidentally made possible war in Europe”.

  1. Rare example of where holding one’s gas in is very rude…

All this suffering caused by the Western world’s left turn malaise in the last 50 year is necessary. Adjustments are now required so populism is rising because of it. God is good.

  2. Somewhere, in whatever hell he inhabits, Henry Morgenthau Jr is smiling. His infamous plan to de-industralize Germany after WW2 and turn it into an agrarian society so it could never again present a threat to peace may finally be implemented. Thanks to Russia, of all countries.

  3. Germany can thank Trudeau for that one. He’s the one who blocked the return of the turbines necessary to move the gas. Force majeure was a no brainer after that.

  4. Stan.
Our liquid gas supply ships are paying 10 million dollar fines for not transporting gas to Japan and Korea, So much more money to be made in Europe.
When the Japanese attack North Korea and take their natural gas , What will Xching China Do?

  5. The Greens big miscalculation was that if they shut down domestic fossil fuel extraction, the people wouldn’t burn it any more.

You can’t get much dumber than that.

  6. The Biden Admin. continues to INSIST this is our progressive, innovative, future … WITHOUT fossil fuels. So what’s the problem? No Russian gas is PROGRESS! And black is white, up is down, and that stub between your legs is 9 inches.

Oh! And the personal economy-crushing inflation? The Biden Admin. says that’s simply a “transitional” cost as we change over to a NO ENERGY … “green” … future. Yeayyyyy!!!

  7. Germany should just use its solar panels and windmills.

They’ve been bragging for years about their green energy. Now live with it.

Turn down their thermostats to 10C, and wear jackets indoors.

Every German should stop using cars. Use public transit and bicycles instead.

They voted for this. They should live with it.

This is what happens when you take a single-issue fringe party like the Greens and grant them legitimacy (and power).

This is also why I will never EVER support “proportional representation” in any of its myriad forms. Run-off elections are my first choice, followed by preferential balloting. If we can’t do either of those, then just keep FPTP. Government is too important to allow fringe parties to hold the balance of power and coerce the major parties into doing things their way to secure their political support.

  8. Germany needs a repaired turbine from Canada to get Russia’s gas. The insanity and discussions show me that the average person and politician is so stupid they should not be breathing. There is no discussion to be had.
