Insurrection Done Right

They broke it, they bought it.

Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has agreed to resign after party leaders in Parliament demanded both he and the embattled president step down on the day protesters stormed the president’s residence and office.

The prime minister’s spokesman, Dinouk Colambage, said Wickremesinghe told party leaders that he will resign when all parties have agreed on forming a new government.

His decision came after the biggest protest yet swept Sri Lanka on Saturday as tens of thousands of people broke through barricades and entered President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s residence and nearby office to vent their fury against a leader they hold responsible for the nation’s worst economic crisis.

Sri Lankan protesters stormed President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s residence and nearby office on Saturday as tens of thousands of people took to the streets of the capital Colombo in the biggest demonstration yet to vent their fury against a leader they hold responsible for the island nation’s worst economic crisis.[…]

Sri Lanka’s economy is in a state of collapse, muddling through with aid from India and other countries as its leaders try to negotiate a bailout with the International Monetary Fund. The economic meltdown has led to severe shortages of essential items, leaving people struggling to buy food, fuel and other necessities.

The turmoil has led to months of protests, which have nearly dismantled the Rajapaksa political dynasty that has ruled Sri Lanka for most of the past two decades.

    1. Doubtful, because India.

Possibly a new Indian province though, that could happen.

        1. And that, ladies and gentleman, is how China does it. It picks a poor area, takes on its debt, and then begins taking over everything else.

  1. Makes one wonder, how and when similar will happen here.

Probably a homeless uprising, in hopes of free crack and cookies.

    1. It will be the hungry who currently live in Canadian homes for the homeless know hard times…

If you don’t conform to the shots and digital controlling currencies which allow you to buy and sell…

    2. Siri Lanka – “a small fringe minority of white supremacists and misogynists are wrong-thinking their parliament today, we must help freeze all their bank accounts! oh wait…..” – Justhin Turdeau July 08/22 note to Canadian parliament.

        1. Justin isn’t working today.

I think the “today” can be safely eliminated, leaving the sentence closer to the truth.

  2. Notice how the AP story does not mention the single most important factor – what government policies led to the complete, utter collapse of the economy, and the inability of the country to feed its own people?

    May I paste a quote?
“The National Environmental Policy renews the commitment of government, in partnership with the people, effectively to manage the environment for the benefit of present and future generations. The aim of this policy is to ensure sound environmental management within a framework of sustainable development in Sri Lanka.”

Of course, the AP writers don’t bother to even ask the basic question – Why the revolt? It’s all just politics, people. Nothing to do with food.
Trying to tamp down my disgust with the media, who heralded Sri Lanka as a Green Beacon for us all a few years ago.

    1. My quote … and I thank Bob Dylan’s brilliance …

At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can’t refuse
When you ain’t got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You’re invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal

The massive crowds of people starving on their feet … have nothing left to lose. When the masses of people no longer have anything to lose in the West? The mass slaughter begins. The National Guard will finally be called out, eh Nancy Pelosi? But unlike the Sri Lankans … American citizens will be shooting back at the weaponized military … and the Revolution begins.

  3. No bodies yet? I’d think destroying the economy would justify the entire bloodlines of everyone even remotely responsible.

They should also completely destroy the palace and Parliament. Those buildings did them no good.

  4. New government? Not until the old government has been hung..to encourage their sucessors and a reminder that their task is to protect the welfare of their citizens not the WEF, World Bank and associated globalists.

    1. Lji
Exactly, butt here in kanucistan we have idiots who would help the authorities kill us off. The fools who helped the authorities re-arrect the construction barriers that had been pulled down around that church in AB.

  5. That’s what hunger, despair and uncertainty look like. Also government control of the food and agriculture sector.

  6. protesters stormed the president’s residence and office

Oh, dear, an insurrection….. I guess Trump’s influence reaches to the Indian Ocean as well.

  7. This is not even an insurrection, historically speaking. This is ‘just’ a mass protest.

The jackasses of Sri Lankan parliament (who caused all this) are still talking about forming a new government using the existing rules of succession. In a “real” insurrection there’s a new group hoisting an entirely different flag over the capital and hoisting government guys on lamp posts.

No doubt the Shiny Pony is watching this and looking at the walls around his place, thinking they need to be beefed up. Don’t fret little Pony, the nice calm Canadian people will toss you out the legal way, by voting. Unless of course you start corrupting the voting process and don’t give us a choice. Then things could get ‘interesting.’

  8. Always had a ‘soft spot’ for Ceylon/Sri Lanka – first there when I was 17, celebrated my 21st birthday there, and went back again when I was 42. Generally speaking the people were ‘nice’, and I always wished them well….they’ve had some tough times.

  9. Population 5 million in 1950.
    Population 21.5 million in 2022.
    Any other explanations needed?
This is going to be a very common occurrence over the next few decades.

    1. Well, the 22 million were even better fed, clothed and housed than the 5 million 72 years ago.

      1. Well Robert and Roger, the population of the planet was about 2.4 billion at the end of WW2 and now it is about 8 billion. People wonder why weather and natural disasters kill and injure so many people. I wonder why so few people think anymore.

      2. Really?
They have cell phones, with which to record their misery, that is different.
I guarantee you that the simpler life of 72 years ago was infinitely preferable to the mess that is going on today.

  10. The unrest will naturally start in the 3rd world. Exacerbated by food shortages it will spread rapidly.

What do they say, “four days from empty shelves in Safeway to riots in the streets.” Sounds about right.

Toss in the instability of the electrical grid. The bank machines going down and it won’t take much. These things have a real spontaneity to them.

  11. Depopulation the goal…Mother Gaia the excuse. Policy drivers aren’t frightened enough and therein lies the problem.
Fear has always been the greatest of motivators.

  12. Their president has resigned. But not until him and his government wrecked everything . Many countries, including western ones are presently faced with the same scenario.

  13. A demonstration of the saying that we are ” nine meals away from anarchy.”.

  14. It sure looks like the police and military did nothing to stop this demonstration in Columbo. Letting people swim in the pool at the palace. What’s next?

    1. Stephen,

You know what the cops were thinking?
Better the protesters swimming in that stupid corrupt asshole’s pool, than the protesters getting really angry and beating us to death.

  15. I guess that when university colleagues are rabbiting on about “decolonizing our institutions” we should prepare for what comes in the wake of “decolonization”.

    1. White “colonialism” = bad.

      Chinese/Mohammedan colonialism/conquest = pinnacle of civilization.

  16. Yes.. Maybe one day my dumb f@#$ Canadian patriots will wake the F up to what our useless politicians have in store for us.. I’m not holding my breath..

  17. From the second article:

The government then took steps to import liquid nano nitrogen fertilizer from India. These stocks were imported at twice or thrice the cost of the market value of the product. However, it was revealed in Parliament that 290 million rupees had been deposited to a personal bank account during this transaction, which is how a selected few amassed profits as the agriculture sector fell deeper into crisis

Corrupt to the core. Paid way too much, kickbacks and bribes galore. Do you think the next Sri Lankan Government will be any better?

Have they ended the incredibly destructive, failed “Organics Only” Policy?
