Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Two words:
Who cares?
They aren’t making pot users like they used to. You site one weak pot newbie and now you are trying tell us that pot is dangerous for teens.
You will experience some paranoia at times, you may want to eat some sweets, you may even fall asleep watching TV. If you vomit, that’s on you. Maybe you shouldn’t have eat three pounds of cookies and candy and washed it down with a few cans of coke.
You know what else is dangerous for teens?
Rock climbing, jumping your bike, and riding a motorbike.
I hate safety fetishists with an undying passion; they are one of the chief causes of the west’s downfall.
yep.
the local mascot troll.
West is spot on. visa vie ‘too much of a good thing’.
you otoh are akin to the vomit.
What a terrible experience for a mother to go through, a daughter ensnared by the devil’s parsley, marijuana! When a child is lost to some publically available product, and Mom does not know how to deal with it (and we certainly do not want to explore why the child has fallen to dope when there is the possibility that bad parenting is to blame), the best course is to impose regulations and sanctions on people.
THC is a mind-altering chemical that has a high potential for harm from heavy long term use.
There goes the narrative that it is safer than alcohol…
Again, who cares?
“Think of the children!!!”, the clarion call of statist authoritarians everywhere.
Your postulate is: “who cares about children?” “F()CK the children?”
No, my postulate is that your fear is your problem, and it is not the gov’t role to protect children from the world, its the parents job. Sometimes parents fail. Its sad, but not a valid reason to deprive others of their freedoms. Sometimes a kid gets his hands on a gun, and kills himself, or a sibling, or whatever. That is not a valid reason for gun control.
I understand that you lost a child to drugs. Do not let your emotions overcome your sense like a woman.
Also, all drug laws violate the 10th Amendment, just like Roe vs Wade does. It is not among the fed’s enumerated powers.
I am farrrrrr more Libertarian than you know. However, I struggle with Federal Drug laws … because of the massive damage drugs do to a functional society. A doped-out country MUST erase its borders and allow 50 Million illegals to do the jobs that druggies just won’t do. Sometimes … HARM must be mollified because of the universal damage it causes to a functional society. Sorry … straight up unbridled freedoms must be curtailed – sometimes – very judiciously. Yeah … we cannot simply ignore stop signs … because they delay our trip.
Children must be protected by BOTH parents and The State. My children MUST be protected by laws forbidding the propagandizing of CRT … or Trans-normalization. Yes, I will teach my children the TRUTH about these things … but I also want the government to absolutely prevent such propagandizing in my child’s classroom.
I am far past my “emotionalizing” about losing my beautiful, smart, good, son … this is now a WARNING to other parents … pot is DANGEROUS!! Esp. for children.
American society survived drugs fine until the early 20th century, when they started banning them. What changed? Nothing. Just a power grab.
Public education is an affront to any thinking individual.
Privatize it.
It IS much safer than the mind altering, violence prone, headache and hangover inducing evil alcohol!
Peace.
Who cares?
I hate pot. I love booze.
You know what I hate more than pot? Pearl-clutching hand-wringers who like to butt into other people’s business. Those people make me sick.
Untrue. I have a DEAD son … and 17 years of HELL … to prove it. PEACE.
My other two kids who never touched pot? Perfect.
Kenji, while I am sorry for your tragic loss, that is not a valid reason to stop other people from using it, if they so choose.
I would never consider stopping any adult from exercising their free adult wills. I draw the line on children. I don’t believe children should be sexualized as if they were adults … or doped up as if they were adults.
But I STRENUOUSLY object to marijuana being termed “medicinal” … that legalization ploy has led to the “normalization” of a mind altering drug. Fer crying out loud … HEROIN makes you FEEL really good too! How close are we to deeming HEROIN … “medicinal”? Poppies are “natural” after all
Look Kenji, you did your best, everything in your power to help your son, and he still died. You cannot blame pot for that, much like one cannot blame bees for killing a child that is allergic to bees, or blame trees for a child falling from a tree and dying.
Some tragic things just happen, and there is no-one and nothing to blame, and often any effort to stop these things from happening is far, far worse than the tragic events themselves.

Sorry Hiho… the carefully propagated hydroponic marijuana we are seeing today, is not the
crappy ditchweed we smoked in the seventies… it has the potential to really damage a
generation of kids. Google brain plasticity and drugs. What happened to ‘if it only saves
one life?’

My girlfriend, mother of three kids who are all community minded, dedicated students. Their family is very tight and admired. Oldest daughter tried vaping with friends over the lockdown. She was previously successfully headed to pre-med after high school graduation. At her doctors appointment yesterday he bluntly told her that she won’t survive her current lifestyle.
Pot is marketed like candy with toxic consequences to naive teens.
But don’t worry, Justin is printing health warnings on individual cigarettes now.
I’m so sorry to hear that. Well said! Pot is marketed like candy! And like MEDICINE for Christ’s sake!!! When it is POISON to a developing brain. It’s all the fault of the “legalize pot” activists who USED “pot is medicine” to get it legalized.
My dead son bought pot from a dispensary, where the doper behind the counter, told him pot was better than the drugs he was prescribed for his psychotic episodes.
Yeah … pot is “medicine” … like the doper behind the counter is a “naturopathic physician” …
I agree. I smoked a lot of pot when I was in my teens and early 20’s and I mean a lot. At some point I opened my eyes and realized all my pot-smoking friends were turning into losers with zero ambition in life except when it came to scoring more pot. That was about 40 years ago. I quit almost immediately and haven’t looked back. Amusing as a social turn-on but makes for a bad lifestyle.
More reefer madness nonsense. Not surprising coming from a garbage rag like the NYT.
But, but, but, everybody knows that smoking pot + playing piano = INSANE!
Personal experience last couple years dealing with lockdown and covid. Found it easy to vape and use it for reducing anxiety. Ultimately found myself with increasing anxiety attacks. Really found a toll on my laziness. Much harder to motivate myself and a slowdown of my mental processes. Very much affected my sleep as with me it kept me awake and my mind spinning.
Everyone does react differently.
Under 18 should not use and the link between bipolar, schiz etc is not clear yet. It is very much stronger than when I was a teen.
Stopped completely, not for me.
Keep it legal. Only thing Trudeau has done correctly, left it up to the provinces.
I tried weed once, in high school, one puff and I choked so hard I threw up repeatedly. No thanks, not interested in Mary Jane, or drugs period. I got behind an old fella the other day smoking a joint, and the stench of skunk was so bad I could smell it in my car. What the hello was he doing smoking a drug while driving.
I got all the contact highs I needed, from every Rock concert I ever attended. In fact … Winterland was the ULTIMATE hot box. I came out of there pretty damn stoned every time. but … pot today is NOT your grandfather’s (like me) pot. Not even close. Pot today is the ULTIMATE GMO … refined for pure THC intensity … which unwires a young kids brain.
My niece has four kids, she smokes pot nonstop in the house, all her kids have become obese because she’s basically hot boxing the kids. She was reported, and they basically said it’s a legal substance, wanna bet the same snivel servant would of taken her kids if she lit up a regular smoke. My brother survived a crack cocaine addition, he was clean and sober only to be struck down with brain cancer. Drugs destroy the body at a rapid rate.
I think the crux of the article claims that the high concentrations of THC in today’s weed, which makes its 70’s and 80’s cousin seem as weak as two day old dishwater by comparison can have adverse effects on young and fragile minds.
The same people from the seventies and eighties era who are responsible for legislating legal weed use didn’t have the foresight of growers amping up the concentrations.
So here we are.
Total BS.
In the 70s and 80s, kids were smoking a lot of hashish, which is considerably more potent than “today’s weed”, which is pretty much the same as it was in the early 90s.
Hashish was much more expensive and not as available as a $50 dollar bag of weed with the complimentary seeds, yes, kids were smoking it but it wasn’t as prevalent.
Today’s high THC concentration “edibles” for example would make yesterday’s hashish seem like a total waste of time for today’s youth who want the best bang for their buck and it’s precisely why you’re not seeing hash anymore.
Today’s THC concentrates can eff up a young mind and if you have a rather weak psyche, even worse. Comedian Owen Benjamin being exhibit A who’s never quite recovered from his one day episode with edibles and who busies himself these days in his cabin in the woods telling anyone who will listen the Earth is flat.
Again: So what?
Some people can’t handle their booze, some people die when they get stung by a bee.
Doesn’t mean we need the state to step in to ban booze or bees.
The article is just fear-mongering of the same stripe that the COVID fear-mongering is.
Also, hash was prevalent in the 70s and 80s, and its still easily available now.
“easily available”…perhaps. But the majority of users simply aren’t interested because today’s pot is a far better alternative.
And yup, I get it – life is chock full of things that can kill you and eff you up because of poor personal choices and people’s reaction to different substances varies from person to person, that doesn’t mean we should ignore warning bells when they’re sounded.
Y’know, like vaccinations and stuff like that.
“that doesn’t mean we should ignore warning bells when they’re sounded.”
What exactly do you mean by that, and who is this “we” you speak of? Are you stating that you somehow speak for “society”, and that “society” should heed your “warnings”, and face some sort of penalty for “ignoring” them?
Do you trust the NYT, or, in fact, anything other than your own eyes to give you “warning bells”?
I was wondering what happened to hash and oil. Nobody talks about them anymore. And both smell a lot better than stinky pot.
You can make hash yourself very easily.
It just a refining process that progressively compacts the resin from the bud flowers more tightly.
Can be done using a series of fine mesh screen bags and cold chilled ice water in a 5 gallon bucket.
Now oil, that’s a different kettle of fish and can be extremely dangerous if done incorrectly using butane in the refining process.
Both processes take time and extra resources, which end up costing more.

“which is considerably more potent than ‘today’s weed’”
let’s see the source for that scientific assertion.

Exactly right..Which is why Sativa is a much more relaxed buzz than the hi potency Indica breeds.
I like a puff (Mild Sativa), once in a while..but a good single malt is by far my preference…that or a decent Cabernet Savignon…or even a nice 10mg edible for that matter.
I like a little puff of hashish along with some bourbon or JW Black Label scotch.
A gram lasts me about a month.
Alcohol is by far my intoxicant of choice.
Two neat Wisers at 4:00 in the afternoon is my guilty pleasure. And I don’t judge anyone else over theirs.
They’re starting to notice because their own snowflakes are the ones developing a taste for the stuff.
It’s only hysteria until it starts inconveniencing our masters personally.
“Its dangerous, so we should ban or regulate it!!!” FO.
Freaking safety-fetishists and their god-damned never ending screeching and hand-wringing.
If you’re scared of pot, booze, waterskiing or cliff-diving while hammered, walking around without a face diaper, or whatever, then don’t do it, just leave everybody else alone, aholes!
Whenever anybody starts blathering on about “harm-reduction” and “safety”, a big part of me wants to smash out all their teeth with a crowbar, including their molars.
They are exactly the same people who like forcing everybody to wear a mask and get jabbed.
They make me sick.
Hiho
Can’t argue with dat.!
As a father of two teenagers I care. I don’t want my kids and their friends to have easy access to a schizophrenic causing drug. I know people that developed schizophrenia and their lives quickly fell apart. If the Gov’t bans a proven safe drug like Ivermectin from use against Covid because it could cause (to quote the AB Health Minister) “Diarrhea and Death” then it’s obvious that Cannabis with demonstrated life altering long term severe side effects deserves a formal harm-benefit analysis followed by appropriate legislation to restrict use. That’s my so what.
“Think of the Children!!! ***Wrings hands, clutches pearls, and talks about how he has a right to raise his kids in a world free of dangers that scare him***
Get bent.
Hey Hi Ho
My son developed suicidal thoughts and actually checked him self into a health facility in Vancouver. I live on the other side of the country BTW and he lived with his mother. He is a young man that smoked an awful lot of pot mostly through vaping. Anyway my ex wife thought he was going nuts but the chief brain doc said to me he had cannabis induced schizophrenia. He also pointed out that it happens all the time. He is OK now. But please do not be dismissive of the relationship between the high grade pot that they are peddling to our children through government sanctioned stores and mental illness. It is not your Father’s pot.. I could add a swear word here but I am guessing that you are aware that you are an..
100%. My straight-A student son started smoking dope with one of his straight-A friends who grew his own on a creek bank at his house. That started and finished my son’s decline. It triggered schizophrenia and eventually that is what led to my son taking his own life … despite years upon years and massive efforts to help him. He never encountered a single Doctor who approved of his use of marijuana. They ALL properly said it was toxic to his brain.
Was my son pre-susceptible to brain damage by pot? Probably. But who can predict such things? You want to play marijuana-roulette with your kids? Again … straight-A student, athlete, great all around kid liked by everyone … until … he started smoking dope early in High School. He covered it up really well … essentially cheated his way through High School … got into a top college … and FLUNKED OUT in the very first quarter. That was just the beginning of the end … when he threatened suicide (which we always took seriously and got medical intervention) on multiple occasions. 17 years later … he no longer threatened it. He did it.
Just wait until Chairman Justin and Obenfuhrer Chrystia legalize cocaine and heroin.
Good. The liberal die-off would be epic.
Anyone who thinks the state should protect people from themselves is an ahole of the worst stripe.
The Liberal Die-Off is fully underway
They are calling it SADS….
Yep. A testament to human stupidity.
The state said “Jab yerself with this, or things will go badly for you.”, and millions said “duh, OK”, and did it. Even crack pushers at schools aren’t that evil, and most kids have a healthy suspicion when some stranger says “First hit’s for free.”
I’m the only unvaxxed in my family, they respect my position, so no issues there, but I fear for them. I’ve already lost my wife, if the rest of my family dies early I’m likely to become a bit unglued.
I am not . I am only a man that loves his son. I don’t clutch pearls. Your glibness and ability to miss the point of the conversation here suggest to me that you perhaps your are indeed an… This not about the vaccines but the sad deaths of many young people who decide to top themselves because they have access to substances that can cause them harm. Shame on you. Learn to walk in another man’s shoes.
And thanks Kenji. You understand. I am sad that you went through that. My condolences.
The point is, mind your own business, and leave other people alone.
Everybody has access to substances that can do them harm, everywhere, on the whole planet, and thinking you can change that is not sane.
*
Why wait?
“The Liberal government will exempt the entire province of British Columbia
from federal drug possession laws, allowing users to have small quantities of
cocaine, opioids and methamphetamine without fear of criminal charges.”

Where are the parents?
Most likely arguing over what color mask to wear, and whether to bring their kids to the Mangina show or the Dicksy Chick show.
You’re probably right.
I think they should put packets of 10 joints in vending machines, and bring back tobacco vending machines, and introduce booze vending machines and ones that sell ammo.
I’ll draw the line at vending machines with coke or heroin in them, they should only have those in adults-only places.
Put Thompson SMGs back in the hardware stores where they belong, beside shovels and chainsaws.
Also, stop all roadside checks, and de-criminalize drunk driving, make it a mere ticketable offense. Of course, causing an accident while drunk would be criminal negligence.
After a generation, you’ll find that men are men again, not the pussified fem cowards that they have become.
Of course, this will never happen, because little pussy fem cowards are much easier to control.
Gotta run, my neighbor’s shotgun is going on a shooting spree, and the pot plant out back has just gotten up and is about to drive all the kids INSANE! Don’t get me going about what the poppies are doin’!
.
No worries … an illegal government will just open our borders, illegally, to immigrants willing to do the jobs that dopers just won’t do. And if they don’t GET those jobs … they’ll just buy an illegal shotgun and waste a 7-11 clerk for cash and scratcher lottery tickets.

Ok, this is right from the horses mouth. I am Libertarian professional cannabis master grower. Have been for years, black market and legal since turdeau made it legal.
To anyone who says cannabis is not a medicine. Tell that to countless people who have drastically improved their quality of life with this plant. Everything from chronic pain to sleep disorders. God, it’s endless and there are mountains of proof.
To the main point. Cannabis cultivation is now being done so poorly by many legal and grey outfits that many chemicals, pesticides and fungicides are used to control poor growing practice. Our idiot govt figures that so long as this stuff is “dead” its OK to smoke. Sooo…. the answer now is to irradiate the bud and or EBeam.
This means all the nasties are still there just killed with radiation. This in my opinion turns a medicinal plant into nothing more that a sponge filled with chemicals.
That is why people are getting sick. Don’t blame the plant blame greed and all these A holes that thought cannabis was gonna be their next oil boom.
Support local small farms that care.
Interesting.
But just like wheat being breed for certain characteristics , cannabis can be selectively breed for more THC or CBD.
If one doesn’t know what the effects of either will do to them it is a bit like Russian Roulette.
Sort of like being an absolute virgin alcohol drinker and starting off with a high proof drink instead of a beer. ( That’s the THC side ).
One should educate themselves on what they are injesting into their bodies not blindly follow their peers.
None of y’all think the New York Times might be lying about weed the same way they lie about everything else?
This article is exactly as true as any NYSlimes article about guns. Okay? Are we learning yet? Lying liars lie.
I won’t comment on it as a recreational substance. But as a “pharmaceutical”, no drug in the last fifty years has been approved with less rigorous testing or quality control than marijuana.
Oh, I don’t know, Dr. D. Haven’t the Americans been doing research to try to prove harms from weed since it was banned? After almost 90 years, there still aren’t any -proven- harms. You can’t find any cases where weed killed somebody all by itself for example, unlike with alcohol or opiates.
I do agree that the Canadian law was passed pretty casually without much testing etc. However I’m thinking the Covid vaxx was approved with a lot less.
Pfizer tested their junk jab for 108 days. Has cannabis had less testing than that?
A blind squirell finds a nut .
Legalizing it was Trudeau’s only accomplishment that wasn’t a disaster.
I’ve known a couple of people who suffer from Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome. Everyone I know who does weed, even casually, can be described as some level of lazy and/or stupid.[1]
Should it be illegal? No. Should teenagers (or anyone else) be doing it? Also no.
[1] It’s an open question which way the causation arrow goes here.
