Agriculture minister Marie-Claude Bibeau said the 35-percent tariff applies to all Russian fertilizer shipments. Farmers in Eastern Canada in particular buy about one-third of their fertilizer needs from other countries.

“Does this government not realize that the 35 percent tariff it is imposing on our farmers is not even penalizing Russia?” asked Conservative MP from Beauce, Richard Lehoux. “It is only handicapping our family farms and doubling the cost of producing Canadian food.”

    1. If there’s a fertilizer shortage why charge a tariff no matter where it comes from? Seems like adding bullets to the empty chambers in a game of Russian Roulette when it’s your turn.

    2. That is a very good question. As I read it’s mainly Eastern Canadian farmers caught in this tariff. It is likely an ordering and shipping issue. Western Canadian fertilizer is probably already sold for this year. Canadian farmers have probably already locked in their purchases of Russian fertilizer (might be easier / cheaper to get it in by ship from Russia than rail via the west). Now that the tariffs are announced the farmers can’t do anything but pay the tariffs and raise prices when they sell their grain – or lose money. It would make more sense for Canada to ban Russian imports in 2023.

        Also, farmers are price takers not setters, grain is a global commodity, we take what we are offered or store it or feed it to animals. So, the answer is that Eastern Cdn farmers bear the tariff. If the tariff is big enough, it will make sense to payextra shipping costs but it is still extra costs. Shipping from China or India is likely more expensive (are they even exporting these days?).

They have energy and food production way more than they need for themselves and they export a lot of critical commodities like nickle, wheat, and natural gas which the world can’t do without, at least in the short term. They also appear to be winning the war, albeit slowly, and their currency is doing fine. They appear to have planned such that they are buffered economically from the sanctions to a degree I wouldn’t have expected.

    Given the failure of sanctions to accomplish their stated goals will our leaders rethink the plan to keep doubling down on them (which in the end are going to hurt food importing countries much worse than they will Russia)?

  24. Let’s get back to fertilizer. Last I heard, the Teck Cominco fertilizer plant at Warfield, BC (a couple of benches above Trail, BC) is still producing a lot of ammonium sulphate fertilizer. This plant dates back to the ’30s, when the US (specifically Washington state) complained about the pollution from the CM&S lead-zinc smelter at Trail, BC (actually, the local joke amongst Trail residents at that point is that one didn’t need a lawn mower; the wind brought the smoke down frequently enough to seriously discourage the grass). So the CM&S installed scrubbers on the smokestacks to remove the sulphur and, not wanting to waste same, built a fertilizer plant on the next bench up (the Columbia River valley is distinguished by the benches formed at the end of the last ice age). A pipeline conveyed the sulphur (not certain in what form) up to the new facility. For many years, the product was “Elephant Brand” fertilizer. Coincidentally, a heavy water plant was built at the Warfield plant, and it provided heavy water to the US during WW II.
    Other fertilizers are required. However, it’s my understanding that there are several potash facilities just southwest of Saskatoon. So what Teck Cominco can’t supply, suspect the potash plants can. Canada should be in reasonably good shape. Unless, of course, one is an easterner who prefers imported fertilizer to the home-grown variety.

    1. Funny thing. Saskatchewan has 11 potash mines and develops enough potash for all of the United States and much of the rest of the world. Yes the soil in Saskatchewan does not need KCL. It almost exclusively needs ammonium nitrate which almost all comes from the Edmonton area.
