All of our course outlines had to be written to accomodate the four “official” learning styles (e. g., completely inept at simple arithmetic–like our dis-numeric Dear Leader–but learning best through “feelings”). In addition, our lectures were supposed to be fully participatory, so that I wouldn’t be doing it all–every one of the kiddies could “contribute” to the “learning” if they wanted to.
AC was becoming more like Romper Room by the time I quit nearly 20 years ago.
I had mathphobia. The U of Alberta business degree was fairly math intensive. The two statistics courses had a calculus prerequisite. I just did problem after problem until I learned how to do every kind of problem. I didn’t understand the concepts but I sure passed the course. In my advanced years I took an MBA from a very ordinary US distance university. The statistics was barely beyond a high school level compared to the calculus based stats I took for the lower level degree. I must admit that in business I added, and subtracted. I did use algebra to manipulate payroll calculations. In my old age I spend 5 minutes and do trial and error.
I taught technology students, so mathematical ability was required to at least understand the underlying concepts.
Unfortunately, the educational ideology that was in vogue at the time wanted to move away from that. Uh, no–it doesn’t work that way. The students needed to calculate structural loads, bolt stresses, and fluid flow rates. Simply using hand-waving and feeling good about oneself did nothing to produce an answer, let alone a feasible result.
