  1. Robert Reich is the sort of economist who believes that no transaction must be allowed without the dead hand of the state coercing buyer, seller or both. Perhaps a schoolyard bully in his youth or the boogeyman left him psychologically unable to imagine free will, critical thinking and mutual benefit.

    Many would answer “socialist”, but they would be wrong. Fascists and socialists are kissing cousins. They both believe in the supremacy of the state over the individual. It’s just that one’s a nationalist and the other an internationalist.

    No, the correct answer is “libertarian” or “classic liberal”.

    1. KM, i disagree with some of your corona stuff, but you are bang on, the political spectrum is not linear, but circular. Bend left and right together to form the circle and communists and facists end up next to each other diametrically opposed to classical liberals. What shocks me is the perversion of “liberal” to the point where it has crossed over to completely to oppose it’s former self.

      1. Peter, I think part of the confusion is between ideology and technique. Both “left” and “right” governments use totalitarian techniques, such as secret police, forbidding dissent, mob violence, etc.But the ideological spectrum is between socialist and libertarian.

        1. My attempt to clarify:

          Fascism is on the right side of the left wing of a partial, truncated ideological spectrum covering collectivism only. Both are on the left of the full spectrum which spans collectivism to individualism.

        2. I respectfully disagree. The spectrum is between freedom and coercion. Totalitarians left and right coerce, when you are being coerced, the ideological underpinnings are as relevant as the number of angels who can dance on the head of a pin. Do this “or else”. Does it matter why at that point?

  22. Giving due deference to the fact that Reich is a midget (mentally and physically), he ought to know that “libertarian” and “dictator” are mutually exclusive. “Libertarian dictator” is an oxymoron.

  23. Oh sure, dictators and free speech go hand in hand. You allow people to just say whatever they want and the next thing you know they’ll be clamoring for some shithead to step up and take their freedoms away – except for free speech, presumably.
    The problem with this little feller and other lefties is that they genuinely believe the lies they slander the right with, while thinking of themselves as infallible. They will never own up to a mistake and that makes them morally suspect.

    1. It sort of makes sense when we consider Reich is describing himself and his ilk, he’s just oblivious to the obvious irony of his statement, being a nasty narcissist, aka a DeMarxists, who like them has been reduced by collectivist catastrophe to projecting his “worst instincts.”
