UBS: Oil demand holds up in Norway, despite record electric car sales

In September, electric cars reached a record 77.5% share of new car sales in Norway. Yet, surprisingly, oil demand is higher than ten years ago when the first zero-emission cars were sold in the country.[..]

Of course, it should also be noted that oil demand does not come just from car usage. Globally, we estimate that passenger vehicles account for around a quarter of total oil demand.

Do tell.

  1. Electric car sales for the entire planet are just a tad above 3 %.

New car sales is not the only number that matters, most cars on the planet are 5 to 10 years old, and there are over one Billion cars on the planet.

Norway has 5 million people, the planet has 8 Billion people.

77% of new car sales being EVs in Norway is a drop in the sea.

    1. There are 2.8 million cars in Norway, and each year they sell an average of 180,000 new cars.

      77% of 180,000 is aprox 139,000

they sold 139,000 Evs, but there is over one Billion cars on the planet.( most cars are 5 to 10 years old as most people keep their car at least 5 years , and most cars run on gasoline…)

the 77% EVs sold in Norway are 1/10th of 1% of all cars on the planet.

77% sounds impressive but like I said ; its a drop in the sea.

      1. Almost 100% of plastic are made from Petrol.

it means that pretty much everything we use from cell phones to GPS devices to tv sets to tooth brushes to shoes to garbage bags to bottled water to medical equipment to electric cars and thousands of other things – all things that more and more people use – are made with petrol.

We cannot stop using petrol, at least not stop abruptly…It will take 50 years or more to replace everything that is now made with petrol or runs on petrol.

And forget electric jumbo jets, the weight of the batteries would be so high that it could carry maybe 20 people instead of 600.

Only tiny small electric planes work, can carry maybe a dozen people and only for trips under 500 miles ( google it, it is 100% true )

The idea that wind, solar and electric vehicles can replace petrol easily , without problems, is untrue and unscientific, in fact so untrue that it is not different from the worst conspiracy theories out there.

        1. A petroleum engineer once told me that gasoline is a happy accident; most crude oil is a feedstock into various industrial manufacturing processes. He said if we didn’t run our cars on gasoline it would be flared off as waste product, there’s not enough of it to justify capturing it and cracking it.

        2. CF.

“PLUS” EV need wires, a bunch of wiring for all that electric stuff to work.
What covers that wire. Plastic made from oil! (-:

  2. With the shortage of semiconductors cars are destine to devolve. You can not start an electric car with a crank.

  3. Ask a ‘greenie’ what petroleum is used for.

After they list only ‘gasoline’, tell them it is basically everything.

    1. I know you already grok this, but it bears repeating.
“You can’t tell a greenie anything”.
Just as “how can you tell a Liberal?”

Like all progressives, they already know everything.
“Fossil Fuels bad man” as they flee in their Gortex jackets to their Toyota Prius.

  4. The UBS “experts” are utter FOOLS and LIARS. Nowhere in their “professional” analysis do they discuss how EV’s are UNIVERSALLY used as “second cars”. They’re a novelty in your garage. An “occasional” driver. THAT’s why fossil fuel use is still growing. How SHAMEFUL that an investment house LIES by this omission.

BTW … I just checked the BASE Nissan Leaf EV which comes equipped with a 40kw battery … that gets you a “official range” (yeah, right) of 149 miles. So you cannot take a trip longer than 75 miles and still get back home. And in fact, with all other losses aside from just driving … probably FAR less than that. Add a little range anxiety and you’d be NUTS to drive the thing more than 40 total miles from home … on a FULLY charged, non-degraded, battery

    1. WOW Kenji.

That’s really bad, so what happens when you turn the heater or air conditioner.
      A friend is asking. (-:
