    One of my favorite carols, “O Come All Ye Faithful,” is on your list. I’ve favored this version by Kathleen Battle from the first time I heard it on Alberta’s Access Radio, back in the day:

    Gods way of making even the most reclusive or reptilian human feel wanted.

    By the way, I have that recording in my collection. One reason I got it was because the ensemble uses authentic instruments and tempi, so the performance would be similar to what it was originally.

    Charpentier lived at about the same time as Henry Purcell. J. S. Bach, Handel, and Georg Philipp Telemann were born about 2 generations after them.

    1. I’m sure many SDAers will recognize the tune for the Huron Carol, but it was probably not original. It appears to be a variation of Une jeune fillette:

      From what I gathered from other sources, it’s an old tune, going back to the Middle Ages, the origins of which appear to be unknown. It would likely have been familiar to Jean de Brébeuf when he wrote Huron Carol.

      By the way, I also have the CD on which that track appears.

  16. For something a little different – my family listen to this every Christmas Eve. Winter Harp Words & Music – Alan Woodland and the Winter Harp Ensemble. A great 51 minutes of Christmas music and stories.

    Someone should puncture his annoying drum.

    1. You’re so right about the Little Drummer Whatever. I’ve hated it since the first time I heard it, which would have been approximately in 1959. The version that I heard had a group (a choir?) of sopranos singing “Pa-rum-pa-pa pum, rum-pa-pa pum”. I didn’t see the point then, and I still don’t.

    1. Beautiful! I especially appreciate that she sang the entire lyrics instead of repeating the second half of the first verse as a chorus.
