  1. A sign as to how far the pollical ‘centre’ has moved.

    These two in their prime were open Left. They worked on the (Australian) ABC and made no secret of their pro ALP (Aust Labor Party – aka the Left of Centre part of Australian politics).

    For them to be quoted from in a somewhat Right of Centre forum like SDA only shows that your average Leftist in today’s environment thinks Marx was only in it for the money and White People.

    1. Agreed – although in this instance, John Clarke was pretending to be the then Minister for Shipping, Bob Collins of the ALP (Centre-Left). FWIW, Collins committed suicide in 2007 when child sex charges were brought against him. More than the front fell off, the wheels too.

  3. I really have no idea what the hell that was about. So the front of an oil tanker fell off be cause it got hit by a wave? A rare occurrence, apparently. Sure sounds unlikely – a wave in the middle of the ocean. Yes, Monty Python all over it.

      Poor design and build exacerbated by poor repair procedures? A distinct possibility.

The ship in question was the Greek oil tanker Kirki, which lost its bow in heavy weather just off the Great Barrier Reef, causing the worst oil spill in Australian history at the time – but it could’ve been so much worse. The crew abandoned ship, and Kirki was left derelict and sinking. The Australian Coast Guard (IIRC) boarded the ship and fought like titans over the next several days to keep it afloat, hampered by continuing heavy weather and the appalling condition of the old and badly neglected ship; they found that almost none of the equipment aboard still worked, and there were holes rusted right through the deck that had been covered by canvas soaked in red-lead primer paint.
