Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Because we care about … WHAT exactly? Please explain.
Your personal data and a detailed model of your face, that totally won’t be sold to third parties we swear!
My son worked for CT for 6 years. From what I know, this is more about shoplifting and less about masking.
You can’t believe what gets stolen from their stores, and how the crooks accomplish these feats. There’s a reason the Dyson vacuums are in locked cages now.
So. We will invade your privacy for our inventory control. Really? And please tell me if they catch ANYONE from this photography … and if that anyone ever gets prosecuted or ever gets incarcerated.
Fuck them. I’d buy my tires elsewhere
I rarely go to CT now.
The company used to have a store a short distance from where I live. A few years ago, it moved to a big-box outlet in a shopping district in the city.
It was bad enough that I couldn’t find anything in its former location. It’s even worse now, being spread out over 2 floors and, worse, much of what it sells is made-in-China junk. I have yet to meet anyone who likes the new facilities.
Actually, they also have automated voices over the loud speaker that state “security camera, scan aisle whatever”. It’s just deterrent measures to scare off the regular criminals. The pros still get ‘er done, regardless of security alerts and facial recognition warnings. (I highly doubt the franchise owner has put that much cash into his security repertoire)
Yes, it’s for anti-shoplifting.
Why would they need facial recognition software to sell to third parties when 99% of customers use credit/debit cards with your information on it anyway? They’ve already got it.
Makes sense, considering everything they sell is from China.
And which store that you shop at doesn’t sell made in China?
Been calling them “Chinatire” for many years.
If it was about “shoplifting”…why wouldn’t it say so.
Over a period of ninety days, Paquette’s impressive yet still very illegal haul included 67 barbecues, 55 generators, and 24 televisions.
He also managed to nab a treadmill, a lawn tractor, a heating system, and various tools and accessories.
Paquette allegedly admitted that his method of theft was to load up a company truck from the warehouse and drive the stolen merchandise to his own house. https://www.narcity.com/montreal/canadian-tire-employee-gets-caught-after-stealing-67-barbecues-and-64-air-conditioners

It would appear that they could get better results by vetting their employees.
I liked how my local Canadian Tire put out a real Nativity scene where everyone could see it.
That’s not an antidote for this, though.
Getting to be a smaller and smaller list of stores I shop at. Most of the stuff they have there is Chinese junk anyway.
We won’t mention Princess (cough! cough!) Auto, will we?
Shop ANYWHERE and then tell me your shops of choice weren’t loaded with Chinese made products.
If I’m looking for odd items, mostly hardware, I can usually find them at Princess Auto, and for less than the same thing on Amazon.ca.
Not my first choice; i prefer to shop locally but if i need something that i can’t get here…
I admit that I go to Princess Auto once in a while as well and for the same reason you do. Sometimes it just happens to have the item that nobody else seems to. Besides, it sells a few military surplus items, some of which I might be able to use for my radio activities.
I inherited a sandblasting cabinet and I advertised it for sale. Some wiseacre deliberately low-balled me with a price that would have been an insult to my father. He started whining that he could get what he wanted brand new at Princess Auto in Grande Prairie when he made it joke of an offer. I’m assuming what he had his eye on was a made-in-China special and he thought he was being “generous”. Uh, no, you weren’t, mate.
I gathered that he did just that as I never heard back from him.
Thumbs up for Princess Auto. Good warranty and return policies. I shop there often.
I work in a liquor store. The only alcoholic Chinese product we have is Tsingtao beer. All other alcoholic products are: Canadian; American; Mexican; Chilean; Argentinian; Australian, UK; French; German; Polish; all Baltic and Scandinavian countries; too many others to mention. Greek products (Ouzu, Sambuca) outsell the Chinese. Most of the non-alcoholic products are Chinese though – corkscrews, shot-glasses, gift bags. Those are an insignificant part of the business.
I’m just laughing at the comments here. Do you really think Canadian Tire is the only one that does this? I have no doubt a chain like Wal-Mart has done this for years.
Well you got that right about Wallymart.
At the self-serve checkout the screen shows your face while you scan your merch.
Them letting you know, “”I can see you “.
I’m just laughing because the facial recognition software keeps blinking: “Unreadable – asshole detected” whenever you leave your Fortress of Stupid.
Yes. We all know you laugh as what we once a sort of cultural thing with us, many decades ago, gets brought lower again and again and again.
You laugh because your a racist asshole, and love to see once proud cultures destroyed, and each new indignity brings yet another chuckle from your foul mouth.
What’s the use of facial recognition when everyone is wearing face diapers?
I don’t really go to Canadian Tire for auto repairs after they charged $138 to tell me I have “may” have a leaking water pump gasket and they need more billable hours money to confirm as they could not find the leak in the one hour they looked at it. Then even more money to replace it. They did not even add water to see where it could be leaking, just right to the big repair bill. So I got a $20 bottle of leak repair and the leak stopped and going strong now for 2 years.
You can’t fault them for that.
All auto repair places are expensive, best learn how to do it yourself.
I had the same outcome at a CT when I had an air leak on my new carb I had just installed, car was running hot and lean, I couldn’t adjust it no ways.
Couldn’t figure it out, so I let CT do it and they found the problem.
My mistake in securing an intake manifold, so I fixed it myself.
Best money I spent on a diagnosis, wasn’t happy but it is what it is.
Everyone’s gotta eat too, ya know.
I get it: having had my own business for decades, I understand what things cost, especially labour. Trouble is, most modern cars are very difficult for a shade-tree mechanic due to all the electronic systems. My daily driver is a VW SUV and I really have little choice but to take it to the dealership for repairs. My ’65 Ford however is a different story – do all the work myself as it is a breeze to work on.
A great comparison happened a few years ago: The fuel pump failed on my ’65 Ford, and at around the same time, the low-pressure fuel pump on my diesel Jeep also failed. The replacement fuel pump for the Ford cost around half of the TAX on the pump for the Jeep. I fitted the pump on the Ford in about 20 minutes, but had to pay an experienced mechanic a few hours work to do the job on the Jeep.
However if you think modern car repair is expensive, try owning an airplane! A couple years ago my mechanic found I had a broken engine mount. $14k later, I was back in the air.
They’d probably have less shop lifting if they didn’t pack crap all over the aisles making hiding spots where they can go to conceal stuff. Cant stand crap tire.
The big-box outlet I referred to earlier was like that in its previous location. Similarly, the CT in Fort St. John moved to more spacious surroundings a few months ago.
At least in each of those, one has a bit of elbow room when walking down the aisles. That, however, doesn’t necessarily mean one can find things easier.
Facial recognition for shop lifters is useless once all these “Woke” stores go Sanfransicko. Aside from selling Chinese Junk, Crappy Tire will now have the ability to sell personal profile info to the Chinese. Who no undoubtedly collect what they can globally with the help of CCP Supercomputers, never knowing if they’ll need it wink wink.
A few reassurances would be nice. They already have a shitload of information on everyone via credit and debit cards that it won’t make a lot of difference if they scope you out in person at one of their stores. As long as the government doesn’t pull this crap I’m not too concerned.
Besides, if it helps catch thieves it keeps costs down for everyone, as well as keeping super cool teenagers from hanging out at the mall for 12 hours a day hassling paying customers .
The only hope is the information overload caused by the data collected. There is a limit to processing extraneous info and the jobs created to examine it are for low paid slackers. Ultimately no one gives a damn.
Kate needs a new category for Cajun Tire stories: Shitty Tools of the Panda, or something like that.
Nearly 40 years ago, I bought a metric socket set at a Canadian Tire. It was a decent set of tools and I still have it. Of course, that was before manufacturing was farmed out to China.
Modern Chinese steel is much, much better than what MasterCraft had in the 1980’s. I’ve worked in scrapyards both in 1987 and much later in 2015, you really get to see how good modern steel is in scrapyards, as you try to disassemble 20 yr old junk that has sat in the rain for a decade or two or more…
Canadian Tire’s institutional shareholders? – Vanguard and Blackrock
I’m sure the Billes family still has a great deal of influence with CT, providing its members aren’t squabbling with each other.
Am I the only grammar Nazi that noticed customer was in singular and employees was in plural on their sign? What does it all mean?
Maybe it’s an unpopular location and they only have the one customer.
ESL employees
Looks like I’ll be wearing a bandana over my entire face ‘cept for the eyes, those will have dark glasses on them…and a low slung hat when going to CRAPPY Tire – Full of CHINESE crap….and pay for my engine lube stuff with CASH.
That’s about all I ever buy there… 5-40 Semi Synth Diesel Oil.
