Calgary’s “New” Mayor

Why are there still oil companies in Calgary?

Newly elected mayor of Calgary, Jyoti Gondek, announced this morning in her first interview as mayor, that her top priority is to declare a ‘climate emergency’ in the city of Calgary.

Gondek said that Calgary has had ‘years’ to declare a climate emergency, and now is the time ‘to get serious and declare [a climate emergency]’.

86 Replies to “Calgary’s “New” Mayor”

      1. She needs to be held accountable to this as she’d need to BAN ALL fossil fuels from the City of Calgary for calling this an emergency.
Stop paying taxes to this corruption!

        1. Cease and desist !!! STOP !!! using ANY fossil fuels of any sort. Isn’t that what one does when declaring an “emergency”? And CAGW is a “Health Emergency” too … Right? An existential threat to every human living in Calgary? Walk your talk, Mayor … cease and desist. Stop. Using. Any. Fossil. Fuel. of. any. sort.

          1. One of the problems dealing with climate change is the catastrophic language attached to it. Those of us who have been around for a lot of years have watched the predictions of imminent disaster unfold many times with minimal actual effect. And here we are again. None of these people seem to have heard the story of the little boy who called wolf too many times. Nor do they listen to those experts who suggest our energies might be better spent learning to adapt and that the cost of adaptation may be considerably less and more effective than attempts to actually change something as complex as climate. Climate change long ceased to be a science and has now become a religion with an entire industry built around it. And a lot of people who have built their careers on convincing the rest of us that disaster is just around the corner. And a lot of people too whose careers have been ruined by questioning the prevailing “wisdom.” There is little that is more vicious than a climate change proponent whose views are being questioned.

        2. The brain dead who followed the instructions of UNIFOR news need to be held account. This bitch – not my mayor – is the union candidate. She voted in favour of all council and bureaucrats’ pay increases. She voted against all taxpayer relief. Calgary has to outdo Edmonton in everything especially with stupidity.

          1. UNIFOR are a apolitical mafia… corruption reigns.
Is everyone sure this election was on the up and up ?
It really is a mystery why people would vote for this fascism.

Having said that, let the stupid bastards that did vote for this have it good and hard.
            “Elect” a fascist, get fascism.

    1. BAD – I think you saw my public service announcement in SDA comments before the election noting she wanted Calgary to follow the Portland defund-the-police model. A city where police resigned enmasse.
I presume a climate emergency requires Calgary to eliminate the use of fossil fuels to emulate the hapless city of London, England.

  1. Yep, as one of the worlds coldest cities enters an icy winter, its mayor’s top priority will be spending millions to make it colder.

We must be living in a simulation because this can’t be real.

      1. Even better, tap the “6X” on that table. Gives you the data all the way back to 1887 or so. Flat lines, basically.

  2. Well, Cow Town is toast.
Stand by for full on attempt to kill our best source of independent, sovereign energy.
Hell, cull the cows, too, and agriculture while you’re at it.
    Stupid fools.

    1. So’s Edmonton.

It dawned on me that our new mayor is the former minister of natural resources. He’s the same lunkhead who posted to Twitter a video of a train consisting largely of tank cars going by, whining as to why he was stuck at the rail crossing in question and wondering why that train was so important. (It’s called “revenue”, you twit.)

I believe that round of mewling and puking was posted to SDA 2 or 3 years ago.

Yeah, the two biggest cities in Alberta are in real good hands, aren’t they?

      1. It’s also why Alberta separating is now dead. Too many brain dead sheeple to make it happen. When the sheep wake up it will be long since too late.
The rest of the province – excluding Lethbridge – might still be able to make a go if it. Just have to wall off those three cities.

        1. Those separatists who remain in those cities will be a fifth column.

I went through my neighbourhood this morning on the way to a certain store. I saw a number of civic campaign lawn signs in favour of Mr. Natural Resources.

I guess that’s what one gets for living in Rotten Rachel’s riding within view of the University of Alberta.

      2. Those long tanker trains are, de facto, our west to east pipelines.
Quick Dick McDick did a funny video on that recently. He was stuck at a rail crossing on his way to his mom’s for thanksgiving.

    1. Edmonton and Calgary. Kenney needs to quickly reverse the last changes made to the riding boundaries taking from rural, giving to urban. I wouldn’t be surprised if Naheed Abrams cheated. Wasn’t there some funny stuff going on last election?

  3. WEXIT NOW!

Oh wait, … ugh, … never mind.

Get used to the suck dear Albertans. Little Fidel will dump enough new voters into your province to make sure the good old days will never comeback.

    1. Got to take up a collection for some one way bus tickets back to Manitoba, BC, Ontario and Newfoundland first.

  4. If you truly care about the environment, your top priority must be to maximize efficiency and use the minimum amount of resources to accomplish a specific task. Governments are notoriously inefficient. What steps will the new mayor be taking to force efficiency on all operations of the city of Calgary, up to and including contracting out and privatizing various functions that it currently performs?

  5. I have friends emailing me how wonderful it is that Calgary has a female mayor.
As if what is between your legs is more important than what is between your ears.
When some hear “Ph.D in Urban Sociology” they drool uncontrollably with awe.
I merely want to vomit and run in the opposite direction.
As others have said…”Good bye, Calgary. It was nice knowing you.”
Climate Emergency??? Did she campaign on that? Did people know that was in the offing?
The only Climate Emergency in Calgary is how much snow the next blizzard will drop.
    Elections have consequences, folks.

    1. What else COULD she have done with that asswipe degree? With Arts, you either “teach” more hapless bastards into lifelong debt, write some godawful book that preaches to the choir of woke cretins, or politics. Poor Calgary, soon to be known as Gastown East.

      1. Meanwhile, Edmonton’s mayor who was appointed as minister of natural resources by Prinz Dummkopf, but who knew nothing about what was involved.

    2. Looks like we’re in for a long haul of a perpetual state of emergency for something or another. Authoritarians love them, be they politicians and their bureaucrats, or citizens who want to impose their woke views and lifestyles on everyone. The government monopoly compulsory public school system has indoctrinated its captive audience with the notion that the most noble activity you can engage in is to be an activist and fight for big changes and then use the political apparatus to force them on others. We are starting to see their efforts bearing fruit. Saint Greta is the poster child example.

  6. There you go, the big problem: all the followers of St Greta’s cult get to be elected and in position to take the big decisions for all of us.

  7. The new political class doesn’t need you. They will tax you into submission. But they are insatiable so they will “borrow” and PRINT even more. They will import s-hole foreigners to out-vote you. Get uppity and they will lock you down and cancel you. The big corporations get the government to impose barriers to emerging competitors through regulations and taxes. Even then the corporations don’t need to make a profit. They can now jig the books with non-GAAP accounting and borrow money from the banks to buy back their own shares. And the banks just keep printing more currency.

YOUR EXISTENCE IS NO LONGER REQUIRED.

  8. Regardless of what you think about the the climate, wouldn’t it make sense to keep the energy industry going strong until something else seems at least possible? All we get is really vague talk about a green economy.
There’d be even more $$$ for them to waste on the Great Stumble Forward.

  9. Adding to the distrust of ALL POLITICIANS and ignoring the assholes.
Either your going to jail or get fined. There is no options that our politicians are allowing.
Many of my jobs were closed as they couldn’t afford getting fined by the hundreds of safety laws imposed.

    1. Yes, but they issued a claim right after the polls closed that those were not Dominion Machines. There were no trademarks that I could see on them. Since it was issued right away, I call BS.

  10. The urban political elites in this country excel at only one thing. Denying reality!
They are guided by the fanatical theories. Common sense is beyond them.

  11. When the NDP were in power, I used to call the province the Peoples Socialist Republic of Alberta. Now its that time again. Socialist as mayor of Calgary, Liberal lapdog mayor of Edmonton, and the NDP back as the government in the next election. Geeze they are going to outdo Ontario.

  12. Yup. Rough-tough Calgary. Ha ha ha ha.

Cow Town? More like Pussy Town in Pussy Province. No different than Trawna. Won’t be one protest.

    Meeeooowwwwww….

  13. Jyoti ticked all the boxes for most women, the young progressive idiots who don’t pay property taxes and the ethnic voters all get what they want.
Sure driving oil & gas companies that survived out of Calgary is a good first step for her to implement. New taxation in the name of climate blather is high on the list.

On another topic, I have more chance of being selected for the Senate than the senate candidates that we voted for.
Junior will appoint Nenshi and some native to the Senate is my prediction to represent Alberta.

    1. TurdHole already appointed the LPC mayor of Banff. Only one spot left and, yes, it’s going to the Purple Princess.

  14. The only climate emergency in the city of Calgary is the political climate where psychopaths are elected to office by mindless voters so that the political leadership can engage in virtue signaling and sing the praises of idiotic gestures to green theocracy. In a progressive swamp like Calgary where the progressives act like a party with big labour PACs vetting their candidates, they are assured of better success than the numerous candidates more favourable to conservatives who split their vote. It’s party politics but whoever plays, wins.
The Oil patch should threaten to move all their head offices to Red Deer or Fort Macleod or where ever and see how she likes the feedback.

  15. What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.
Some people you just can’t reach.
So you get what we had here this week, which is the way they wants it.
    Well, they gets it..
I don’t like it any more than you……

    1. “What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.”

I’m thinking that what you have here is the inevitable result of urbanization: a helpless majority that has been dependent for so long that it has lost the ability to even contemplate the consequences of its own actions/inactions.

  16. I think it was rather foolish of her to send such a divisive ideological message right after the election. She needs to build partnerships and garner broad support. This is not the way to do it.

  17. Farkas was my and my wife’s choice… This BITCH is WOKE on Fking steroids. Pro BLM, Pro CRT, Pro refund the Police…and will invite ~30,00 Haitians who you can bet are on their way to Roxham Rd.

Am actually surprised Brandon isn’t flying them direct on one of those nighttime deployments of illegals….upon invitation by PM Dickspank

    time to get armed…

  18. She needs to build partnerships and garner broad support

What for? It’s government by fiat. It’s good to be queen. Who’s going to stop her?

  19. The oil’s in Alberta, whether the Bay Streeters who thrust Peter Lougheed into office like it or not.

They’re not about to actually move to Socred country with the chumps who do all the actual work of getting the oil out of the ground.

Even if they wanted to, or they thought their Chinese trophy wives would stand it for more than a few days, they are well aware the Socreds hate them (for good reason) and know how to shoot straight.

The Bay Streeters are scum. They’re not stupid. They wouldn’t be as big a problem if they were.

    1. Praying for an electromagnetic pulse now to crash the banking system?
Which is the only way to separate the politicians from taking everything you’ve got.

      1. A fiat, debt-based, fractional-reserve government/corporate cartel central banking monopoly is the absolute worst kind of “monetary” system. In time, everything becomes financialized, everything eventually falls into the control and possession of the government and its corporatocratic enablers. They will not stop until they own it all.

  20. According to a recent Calgary Herald article most Calgary energy companies are focused on paying down debt and increasing dividends, activity is mostly maintenance, not focusing on growth and development. Survival/cash out mode.
You don’t have to have an office in Calgary if your business activity is in rural Alberta.
All corporate administration is online now. A small or new energy company can have no office, no employees just independent contractors and, if they can remain private (not a publicly traded company), can fly under the radar, no publicity, no public attention.
The mayor of Calgary doesn’t even know we exist.

  21. And I thought Nenshi was an arrogant half wit. Coming out at this point with a statement like that will cause “Antifa” to riot at city hall. Climate change?? She’s less educated than Nenshi. Go back to high school Gondek. Take a science course. Your ignorance is blinding you.

    1. She would need to take a time machine back to when science wasn’t propaganda, the whole climate emergency b.s. can be blamed on professional scientists letting their socialist world view influence their better judgment of facts in plain sight.

The fact that one has to walk a few hundred steps further to see the end of a mountain glacier is hardly a “climate emergency” it’s just an opportunity to achieve a higher fitness level.

  22. Several years ago when the big oil companies started pulling out of Calgary / Alberta, I knew it was a signal and I left too.
Poor Calgary, you shot yourself in the foot. Not like some of us could not see it coming.

  23. Why are there still oil companies in Alberta? Because they’re complicit that’s why. To them this goofy mayor isn’t an adversary but an associate. They’ve found other ways to take money out of your wallet and govt subsidies are bigger than any oil field out there.
See them squawking much about an extra .10 cent carbon tax? Nope. Because they don’t give a shit and because they’re totally on board with it. You should visit their websites once in a while, and you’ll get a sense that them and us ain’t exactly on the same team.

While you’re at it, check out who their biggest investors are. Vanguard. Who are only second to Blackrock if the conversation ever switches to who’s buying up shit in this world.

    1. oil companies are complicit…their biggest investors are Vanguard second to Blackrock buying up shit

Yup. People talk about “media concentration of ownership”. That’s true, but it’s also true of all publicly traded corporations today. Regardless of industry, all public companies are owned by the financial cartel, whether “hedge funds” like Blackrock or Vanguard, or the major chartered banks. And add all the government union pension funds. They own it all.

There are no nations. There are no peoples. There are no Russians. There are no Arabs. There are no third worlds. There is no West. There is only one holistic system of systems, one vast and immane, interwoven, interacting, multivariate, multinational dominion of dollars. Petro-dollars, electro-dollars, multi-dollars, reichmarks, rins, rubles, pounds, and shekels.

It is the international system of currency which determines the totality of life on this planet. There is no America. There is no democracy. There is only IBM and ITT and AT&T and DuPont, Dow, Union Carbide, and Exxon. Those are the nations of the world today.

“The international system of currency” is created by the central banks of the world. So I would say that the world isn’t a business, but the world is a central bank money printing machine, Mr. Beale.

  24. calgary gets what they voted for……….. i’m glad I don’t live there anymore
doesn’t matter anymore…………. canaduh! is no more……….. chinada

      1. As I said earlier, the rivalry has gone full moron. Now we’re seeing who can splat at the bottom faster.

        1. Yup.

I preferred it when Edmonton and Calgary were simply sports rivals. Now it’s a race to see which can become the bigger slum.

Thanks a lot for nothing, Getty. Yeah, you were the one who decided that Edmonton should become a government town while your oil industry buddies moved to Calgary.

  25. Nenshi wasn’t bad enough???

    Calgary, what were you thinking?
    ==================================================
“For forty years and more people have been shouting from the rooftops about the imminent “CLIMATE EMERGENCY!!!”

In that regard, consider the following:

    e·mer·gen·cy
    əˈmərjənsē
    noun
    1. a serious, unexpected, and often dangerous situation requiring immediate action.

Call me crazy, but anything that has given absolutely no signs of showing up after forty years of endless warnings is not an “unexpected situation requiring immediate action”.”

    – Willis Eschenbach

  26. This is very similar to how Venezuela ended up where it is now. Destroy your key economic engines with corrupt politicians and bureaucrats. The brain dead sheeple refuse to believe it will happen (not if) here.

  27. Global Warming and CO2 are getting better lately.
I know that because like Greta I can see CO2 in the air, and CO2 is definitely dropping.

    Why not?
If Greta can see air molecules why can’t we all?

  28. She is being identified as z women “of colour”, but in her picture she seems to have blondish hair and light skin, so I wonder which colour she is portraying herself as.

  29. The wife asked me today to go protest the oil and gas companies downtown.
So I asked her what are you doing to “save the planet”.
I give her marks for admitting her car runs on gasoline and the house needs natural gas for heat.
    The protest request got dropped.
I didn’t ask whom got her mayor vote.

  30. Like I said before, this is in large part a consequence of the right stupiding itself over the past quarter century. Urban centers tend to be places of money, education, and culture, and the NuRight isn’t interested in any of these or interesting to anyone who has those traits.

The solution for Alberta is 1) more major cities and 2) busting up Calgary like Victoria. Victoria’s political fragmentation is a godsend, Toronto’s consolidation was Harris’s worst blunder and that says something. Number 1 will of course require more immigrants. Get them up here! Also 3), disempower local government. Pull the teeth out.

PS: barely 350K people turned out.
